Right now, there is a low to the west of New Mexico. This will drop some decent snowfall amounts to parts of New Mexico and Texas before working its way up to the Midwest where even more impressive snowfall accumulations are likely. The bulk of Mabel’s impact will hit parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Eventually, Mabel moves into the Northeast bringing 5-8 inches in some places. The other big story associated with Mabel is the extreme rainfall numbers it will bring to the already flooded Southeast.

A dip in the jet stream mixed with abundant Gulf moisture will create severe thunderstorms, and a flash flood threat for the majority of the Southeast over the next week. Winter storm Lamont is currently dropping disappointing snowfall numbers for the Northeast, but they could get some action later in the week. A cutoff low, off the coast of Southern California, will combine with a dipping jet stream to bring a decent snowstorm to New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine later in the week. Winter Storm Lamont is currently moving through the Midwest bringing 5-8 inches of snowfall to parts of Wisconsin. Parts of Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan should be seeing snow accumulations more in the 2-4 inch range. Lamont then moves off into the Northeast, dropping snow from New York to Maine. In the Southeast, severe thunderstorms are likely all next week bringing heavy rainfall to an already flooded area. We’ll keep an eye on the strong winter storm that looks possible for next Thursday-Friday.

Parts of Idaho and Montana are seeing heavy snowfall rates throughout the day. This low will then move into the Midwest bringing snow to parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio, and Michigan. The storm then continues into the Northeast bringing decent snowfall numbers to New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Later next week, another low will move up from the Gulf bringing significant winter weather to the Midwest and possibly the Northeast. Meanwhile in the South, rain is going to continue throughout all of next week in areas that have already declared a state of emergency due to extreme flooding.
