Front Porch Politics would like to take a moment to recognize the men who helped mold our country. The men we are going to recognize are some of our former Presidents. This President’s Day we hope you take time to celebrate the men who made our country great, and who showed leadership to guide this great land of ours to become a world power.
George Washington
The Prayer at Valley Forge
“…the harder the conflict, the greater the triumph.”George Washington
On Christmas night, 1776, Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River and attacked unsuspecting Hessian mercenaries at Trenton, forcing their surrender. A few days later, evading a force that had been sent to destroy his army, Washington attacked the British again, this time at Princeton, dealing them a humiliating loss.
The First President
Still hoping to retire to his beloved Mount Vernon, Washington was once again called upon to serve this country. During the presidential election of 1789, he received a vote from every elector to the Electoral College, the only president in American history to be elected by unanimous approval. He took the oath of office at Federal Hall in New York City, the capital of the United States at the time, establishing the phrase “so help me God.”
Washington’s Prayer
Oh, eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the Lamb and purge my heart by Thy Holy Spirit. Daily, frame me more and more in the likeness of Thy son, Jesus Christ, that living in Thy fear, and dying in Thy favor, I may in thy appointed time obtain the resurrection of the justified unto eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the world be filled with the knowledge of Thee and Thy son, Jesus Christ.

young Nashville lawyer: “Why, General Jackson, what do you want with such a place of torment as hell?”
Andrew Jackson: “To put such damned rascals as you are in, that oppose and vilify the Christian religion.”
The Famous Scar
During the Revolutionary War, the 13-year-old Jackson joined the Continental Army as a courier. In April 1781, he was taken prisoner along with his brother Robert. When a British officer ordered Jackson to polish his boots, the future president refused.
