  • (278) Caleb Teicher, New York based dancer and choreographer

Today on Conversations On Dance we are joined by New York based choreographer and dancer Caleb Teicher. Caleb began their career as a founding member of Michelle Dorance's critically acclaimed company Dorrance Dance, quick achieving personal critical acclaim as well when they received a Bessie Award at age 17. In 2015, Caleb shifted their creative focus towards Caleb Teicher & Company, a creative home for incubating new concert dance works from Teicher’s unique perspective.

We talk to Caleb about their unique early training, how musicality and broad range of musical styles play an integral role in their creative output, and their upcoming performances of ‘SW!NG OUT, directed by Caleb Teicher.' If you are located in the Houston area, see SW!NG OUT on April 9, 2022 at 7:30 at Society for the Performing Arts. Ticket and performance information available at spahouston.org.

  • (275) Ragamala Dance Company

Today we hear about the Ragamala Dance Company. We are joined by the company's founder and co-artistic director, Ranee Ramaswamy, and her two daughters: co-artistic director Aparna Ramaswamy and Choreographic Associate Ashwini Ramaswamy. This mother-daughter run company was founded in 1992 and is rooted in the South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam. Through multi-disciplinary dance works for the stage, engaging the community, and educating the next generation, Ragamala epitomizes intercultural and immigrant narratives that evoke a shared sense of humanity. They train the next generation of dancers through the Ragamala Training Center.

We talk with this trio about their origins in dance, the style of Bharatanatyam, the founding of their company, their choreography, and what they have coming up in the next few months. The company will be performing ‘Fires of Varanasi' at the Soraya in Los Angeles on April 9, 2022 (https://www.thesoraya.org/calendar/details/ragamala-2022). Today on ‘Conversations On Dance', we are joined by Janet Eilber, the artistic director of the Martha Graham Dance Company and Wild Up musical director Christopher Rountree. Janet and Christopher have been working together to revive and re-envision the choreographic works of 20th century giant Martha Graham and their accompanying musical compositions. They talk to us about their process in re-envisioning these works, how they attempt to inhabit the minds of the creative geniuses who bore them, and why these works are still relevant to audiences today.

The Soraya performing arts venue in Los Angeles, CA has been an integral part of these restoration projects and will be the first to present the latest project ‘The New Canticle for Comedians', a reimagined upgrade to a Graham work that was almost entirely lost. The premiere of ‘New Canticle' is this March 19, 2022. If you are in the Los Angeles area, you can find tickets at thesoraya.org or click here for tickets https://www.thesoraya.org/calendar/details/mgdc-2022.

  • (272) Karole Armitage, Artistic Director of Armitage GONE! Dance Company

Today we are joined by Karole Armitage, Artistic Director of the New York-based Armitage GONE! Dance Company. Karole has had an extensive career as a dancer and choreographer.  She began her professional career in 1973 as a member of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, Switzerland, under the direction of George Balanchine. In 1976, she was invited to join Merce Cunningham's company, where she remained for five years, performing leading roles in Cunningham's landmark works.

She began her choreographic career in 1979, showcasing her unique voice in the dichotomy of classical and modern dance. Requests for commissions came in quickly once she started creating dance, from companies such as the Paris Opera Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and companies throughout Europe. In 1990, she choreographed Madonna's now iconic music video, “Vogue,” then went on to choreograph for Michael Jackson's music video, “In The Closet.”

In 2004 she founded her company, Armitage GONE! Dance, which will be onstage this month at New York Live Arts. We caught up with Karole as she was at the studios between rehearsals to hear about her expansive career, stories of working with Balanchine and Cunningham, choreographing for two of the most prolific pop stars of all time, and about her company's upcoming shows. Don't miss “A Pandemic Notebook” at New York Live Arts March 16-19, 2022. Tickets are available at https://newyorklivearts.org/live-arts-plus.

  • (271) Lynn Garafola, Dance Historian, on Bronislava Nijinska

Today we are joined by Lynn Garafola, dance historian and author of ‘La Nijinska: Choreographer of the Modern.' Ms. Garafola is Professor Emerita of Dance at Barnard College, Columbia University. A dance historian and critic, she is the author of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and Legacies of Twentieth-Century Dance, and the editor of several books, including The Diaries of Marius Petipa, André Levinson on Dance (with Joan Acocella), José Limón: An Unfinished Memoir, and The Ballets Russes and Its World.

She has curated several exhibitions, including Dance for a City: Fifty Years of the New York City Ballet, New York Story: Jerome Robbins and His World, Diaghilev's Theater of Marvels: The Ballets Russes and Its Aftermath, and, most recently, Arthur Mitchell: Harlem's Ballet Trailblazer.

We talk with Lynn about her new biography of Bronislava Nijinska. Overshadowed in life and legend by her brother Vaslav Nijinsky, Garafola has written the first book to document the full scope of Nijinska's creative work. Nijinska was a remarkable dancer in her own right with a bravura technique, a teacher, and a prolific choreographer, working with leading figures of twentieth-century art, music, and ballet, including Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Frederick Ashton, Alicia Markova, and Maria Tallchief. ‘La Nijinska: Choreographer of the Modern' will be released next month, wherever books are sold.
