As India's Muslims celebrated Eid, the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan this week, many did so with a sense of unease. The majority-Hindu nation is seeing a surge in nationalist sentiment driven by the ruling party's religious right, and India's Muslims feel their culture and traditions are being targeted. One prominent Islamic figure fears it could be enough to push India's traditionally moderate Muslims towards the same sort of extremism witnessed elsewhere in the world.

They became known as the 'murder babes', three Thai women in their twenties who went on the run after killing and dismembering a young bar worker. The Thai media became obsessed with the case, elevating the suspects to celebrities until they turned themselves in and confessed to the murder. All the while, people profited from the crime. Young girls wanted to buy the colourful striped bags the suspects carried in the CCTV footage and unbelievable souvenirs were produced. The whole thing sickened many Thais and raised questions about the conduct of the media and police.

It's being described as the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II. More than 20 million people are at risk of starvation, mostly in Africa. The tiny self-declared state of Somaliland has been hit hard by the worst drought in living memory, combined with hunger and deadly disease. Africa correspondent Sally Sara reports from the General Hospital in the city of Burao.

Bowing to widespread pressure, India's Government is now promising to ease an outright ban on selling cattle for slaughter, that has jeopardised billions in exports and ruined livelihoods. The ban has been condemned as religiously-motivated, and an unconstitutional attack on freedom of religion. The Government now concedes it didn't anticipate the impact.
