Counterflow with Buck Johnson

My guest this week has more credentials than I can list here, so I will simply call her author of great books and Presbytera, Dr. Eugenia Constantinou. We discuss many of the themes in her latest book, "The Crucifixion of the King of Glory". Growing up in the West, many of us fail to understand the full meaning of Christ's death on the Cross, what he did between his death and resurrection, how we obtain salvation, what sin is, what hades and hell are, and so on. Dr. Jeannie (as I call her) and I take a deep dive into these topics. We start with a chat on the Bible being seen as a real historical record, and we go from there.

My guest this week is friend of the show and world-renowned podcaster, Monica Perez. Monica and I had such a great discussion that I didn't even get to one of my questions that I had written for this interview! We get into a chat about questioning forms of governance, church and state, and questioning other "taboos" that we take for granted. This is a very free-flowing and fun talk!

My guests this week, like myself, both considered themselves libertarians at one point. They now, like myself, are Orthodox Christians. They are Matt Erickson, of the Kingpilled podcast, and Julie Mastrine. My guests and myself are not the only ones to journey on this path. Why is this a thing? What is it about Orthodoxy that attracts some libertarians. Is libertarianism compatible with Orthodox Christianity? Are we still using political labels at this point? Is libertarian thought rooted in a post-enlightenment worldview? Matt and Amy take us on their journey and discuss what they've learned along the way and how they've changed.

This week, I have a Lieutenant Col. in the Army as well as an Army Chaplain AND an Orthodox Priest, and they are all the same person! That would be Father George Hill. He and I speak on the fact that masculinity has, for the most part, disappeared from most areas of Western Culture. Why is this? What are the ramifications? How can it be fixed? I also ask him if it's appropriate for an Orthodox Christian to join the military these days. We touch on many great topics, and I think you'll enjoy Father George's candor.

This week, not only do I have a wonderful guest, but a great co-host as well! Julie Mastrine is back on the show, this time as my co-host. Our guest is Joseph Sciambra. His story will keep you glued to this one the entire time. Joseph was raised as a Catholic kid in the Bay Area. He was molested numerous times by multiple Catholic priests, starting at age 9. This continued through his teenage years and finally, he left the Catholic church in his late teens. In his twenties, he was living as a gay man in San Francisco, where he lived fast and hard for a decade. At age 29, he was so burned out, he went back home and joined the Catholic church again only to find more priests who were preying on vulnerable men. He details many of these horrific moments and the fear that it instilled in him. Finally, he discovered Father Seraphim Rose and immediately felt drawn to his story. Through Fr. Seraphim, he found the Orthodox Church and knew he had found a home where he could actually feel safe and loved and could trust the priests. This is a wild episode, and I'm thankful for Joseph's openness. The LGBT movement does not like many of the truths that Joseph speaks about getting out. We get into his therapy and how he realized that, no, he wasn't "born gay", but rather, it had to do with deep psychological issues that he is still confronting to this very day.

This week features my appearance on the Things Hidden podcast with prior Counterflow guest, David Gornoski. I liked our discussion so much that I wanted to feature it on this show. We get into my journey from Death to Tyrants to Death to the World. We cover my job as a firefighter, the spiritual growth in my life, my political views and how they've changed, and lots more. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.

This week, Julie Mastrine is back on the show, and she has her twin sister, Amy, with her. They are here to discuss the toxic pendulum swing that some men have taken away from the evils of the progressive feminist left and right into the evils of toxic fake masculinity. In Orthodoxy, we are taught to not fall into the trap of the Devil's Dialectic where we have to choose one evil or the other. They're both demonic, and that's exactly how it's planned. We are to follow the Royal Path rather than falling to the left or right (spiritually), yet many of us fall. This is a discussion all about that and the toxic sides of the man v. woman dialectic that "society" has offered us to choose from. We offered a more nuanced and loving take on the way men and women can view one another.

My guest this week is Fr. Peter Heers. Fr. Peter is the founder and current head of Uncut Mountain Press, the founder and head of The Orthodox Ethos. He put together a wonderful video presentation called "Transhumanism: An Orthodox Christian Analysis", in which he does a deep dive into the topic of transhumanism. In this episode we discuss the topic from a historical perspective as well as an Orthodox perspective.

My guest this week, in what is one of my favorite interviews to date, is David Gornoski. David is the host of the radio show, A Neighbor's Choice, a show that looks at politics, science, and culture through the lens of Jesus' personhood revolution. On his radio show and also on his online-exclusive podcast and film series, THINGS HIDDEN, David has interviewed personalities like Ron Paul, Jordan Peterson, and Slavoj Žižek. David has also written multiple essays and columns promoting Jesus' nonviolent ethos and personhood revolution for publications such as the DailyCaller, Townhall, American Conservative, and FEE.

In this episode, David breaks down Rene Girard's Mimetic Theory, and as this episode plays out, he intertwines it through various subjects in a way that ties everything we discuss together. Christianity, politics, anthropology, societal relations... it's all here, and it's a wonderful discussion.

My guest this week brings a frightening yet important topic to the table. Aman Jabbi is the foremost expert when it comes to explaining the digital existence that we will likely experience very soon. Facial recognition, smart cities, artificial intelligence, geo-fencing, central bank digital currency, and total control over our existence. While this all sounds fairly ominous, we also get into a discussion about how it can be avoided and what that even looks like.
