Counterflow with Buck Johnson

This week, my format is a little bit different. I was a guest on a livestream over on Jimbob's great YouTube channel (Made by Jimbob), and this episode is from that. I wanted him on my show, and he wanted me on his, so here we are. In this discussion, we get into his journey into Orthodoxy, his political awakenings, and his appreciation for beauty and aesthetics, apart from the sweatpant culture that surrounds us.

My guest this week is returning for a second appearance. He is the wonderful content creator over at the Church of the Eternal Logos, David Patrick Harry.

David is a Ph.D. student at the Graduate Theological Union, where his research focuses on New Religious Movements and trends within America. In addition to that, he does research into the occult, the New Age, and psychedelic spirituality, and David is also a Christian apologist from the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

In this episode, we discuss mushrooms, DMT, Ayahuasca, and other psychedelics and what spiritual effects they can have on one who partakes. Is there an actual spiritual element to psychedelics? Is it necessarily positive or negative? We discuss how the spiritual experience happens and what exactly that means. We also discuss the paradigm of the psychedelic relative to the paradigm of the Orthodox Christian.

My guest this week is the owner of the Samizdat Network as well as a writer for a major newspaper. We discuss the interesting path he's traveled when it comes to his politics, philosophical interests, and now his spiritual life. Griffin has written for many platforms my listeners will be familiar with, including Fee.org and Mises.org. After his journey through libertarianism, he took a deep dive into the UFO world. Now, how would THAT lead one into Orthodoxy? Well, it's written about within Orthodox books, and we get into exactly that! My guests are the hosts of the podcast, "World War Now". They also have a Substack with the same name. They dive deep into what is truly happening between Russia and Ukraine and then beyond that regarding who represents which side, and really, what those "sides" represent. The Western media is not a reliable source for real information on these issues, but Conrad and Dmitriy are very good at giving you the relevant information as well as the ramifications of things to come.

This week, Archpriest Father John Whiteford is on the show, and we discuss the themes in his four-part series, "The Birth of a New Religion". This series examines the threats of modern society that Father John sees creeping into Orthodox Christianity. These would be: Ecumenism, the LGBTQ ideology, pro-abortion sentiments, and renovationism. We discuss each of these and how/why they are a threat to Orthodoxy. We see the US State Dept. funding the NATO/Ukrainian push to eliminate Christ's True Church in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Not only to eliminate but to murder ordained priests and burn the Churches to the ground. Why are the globalist elites in the West determined to subvert Orthodox Christianity? Who is funding the forces in the US that are attempting to co-opt the Church? We get into all of this and more in this episode of the Counterflow Podcast.

One of my favorite guests is back with us this week. That would be Father Turbo Qualls. Fr. Turbo is an Orthodox Priest at St. Mary of Egypt Serbian Orthodox Church in Kansas City and part of the excellent "Royal Path" podcast. On this episode, Fr. Turbo and I discuss the spiritual warfare not only in the outside world, but within each of us. Sometimes, getting closer to the Light of Christ is a scary thing as the proverbial fat burns away. The demons play on our lust for comfort especially, and it can feel good in the moment to give into their call. We also dive into Fr. Turbo's punk rock days, and he details how being an "outsider" of sorts prepared him for Orthodoxy. Fr. Turbo drops a lot of wonderful wisdom in this episode, and I have no doubt that you will learn some things.

My guest on this week's episode is Father John Valadez. Fr. John is the current head man in charge at the Death to the World magazine and website. Death to the World seeks to inspire truth-seeking and soul-searching amidst the modern age of nihilism and despair, promoting the ancient principles of the last true rebellion: to be dead to this world and alive to the other world. We discuss the nature of punk rock and metal subcultures and the rebellion against the fake American Dream and modern society that they promise. But what solutions do punk and alternative counter-cultural movements offer? Many times, people within those groups find themselves in a dark, empty world of nihilism. Orthodoxy offers people a true counter-cultural rebellion against a fake, empty world, yet also offers a transcendent, spiritual, and mystical solution.

My guest to start us off in 2023 is Father John Peck, who puts on the tremendous weekly class called "Ecclesioclasm: The Church, The Virus, and the Vaccine". In this weekly class, he breaks down the constant barrage of propaganda that is thrown at us on an almost minute-by-minute basis. The globalists and the evil powers behind the push for one world government and religion are ultimately out to end the Orthodox Church, as they've said multiple times and as you're seeing play out in Ukraine right now. Why is this? What can be done about it? Is there optimism for 2023 and beyond? We discuss all of this and more in the episode of the Counterflow Podcast.

This week, Dr. Mark McDonald is back on the show, and as per usual, we aren't shying away from spicy topics. Mark has a wonderful Substack where I found two pieces recently that we dive into. "The Disappearance of the American Man" and "Why American Women Are Undatable". Broadly, men have become lazy, apathetic, unhealthy, and unwilling to go out and date. Why is this? Why are testosterone levels so low? Does it have anything to do with the feminization of the United States? How did what happened in 2020 impact this? Does the fact that many women are mentally unstable, narcissistic, angry, and undateable? When did this phenomenon happen? How is it all related? We get into ALL of this. Towards the end, we discuss the depression that many people feel in December and how that can be conquered.
