This week our topic is real life heroes. Not all heroes wear capes. These average Joes had no special power except the power to put themselves at extreme personal risk for a stranger.  Nydia tells us about Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who put her own life in danger to save Jewish children during the Nazi invasion of Poland. Dana shares the amazing story of Raoul Wallenberg who used the phrase fake it til you make it quite literally when he saved over a 100 thousand Jews from certain death.  Cindy tells us the touching tale of a local police officer who saved a man from suicide. 

 

For dinner this week, Cindy took us back to the old country and treated us to Polish meatballs in a delicious sauce. For dessert, she made some tender chocolate rugelach.  She brought us back by pairing our meal with a Riesling from a local winery called Tomasello’s. This wine has a special place in our hearts since it’s grown locally but it was a tasty Riesling and an excellent way to round off the meal.

This week we focus on rags to riches stories. We often daydream about suddenly coming into a windfall of money, but be careful what you wish for. Not everything that glitters is gold. Nydia tells us about Abraham Shakespeare, a man who won $31 million dollars in a Florida lottery. Was it happy ever after for him?  Dana shares the origin of many of today’s Hollywood jargon by telling us the story of Clara Bow. Did fate have it in for her? Cindy tells us some insane lottery horror stories that will have you second guessing that lottery ticket. 

 

For dinner this week, Cindy treated us to a rags to riches meal. She made a “Poor Man Husband Casserole” which didn’t just taste amazing but was budget friendly as well. For dessert, she took the rich man’s approach and served up some decadent 

Orange Creme Brulee.  Our meal was paired with Gouguenheim Malbec. This wine had an $8 price tag but tasted absolutely delicious. An excellent choice for the topic of the week.

With the holidays around the corner, we’ve turned our thoughts to spending and who we spend our money with. Our topic this week is companies so sinister that they’ve changed the course of history. Dana shares the dark history behind the Nestle company and all it’s evil deeds. Nydia tells us all about the United Fruit Company now known as Chiquita Banana and the massacre they may have been responsible for. Cindy brings us the tale of the Barilla Pasta, Hobby Lobby and Chic Fil A and LGBTQ+ controversies. 

 

For dinner this week, Cindy brought us a dish right out of the Caribbean in honor of the banana republics created by the United Fruit Company. She prepared Puerto Rican cube steak and onions with a side of mofongo, a dish made from plantains (cooking banana). For dessert, Cindy made us an inside out apple pie. If you’ve never tried one, you are missing out. Our dinner was paired with Seven Falls Cellar Merlot. This wine was a smooth Merlot with notes of juicy dark fruits and cocoa. An excellent choice for the topic of the week.

Nothing says family togetherness like group murder.  You may think your family is toxic around the holidays but the families we talk about this week really take the cake. Dana brings us the story of the most prolific family of killers, the Gonzalez sisters, also known as La Poquianchis. These sisters were ruthless in their methods! Nydia tells us about the Bloody Benders, a family who owned an inn and preyed on travelers along the Great Osage Trail. That basement wasn’t used to store potatoes over the winter. Cindy shares some listener stories that will leave you wondering if some people should reproduce. 

 

For dinner this week, Cindy brought us Thanksgiving leftovers like nobody’s business. She prepared turkey sandwiches on Hawaiian sweet rolls slathered with cranberry sauce and stuffing. She served these with a side of baked mashed potato puffs.  For dessert, Cindy presented us with some redemption pumpkin rolls, who did it best-style. She also created caramel pumpkin cookie bars. These cookie bars were the perfect sweet to round off the meal.  Our dinner was paired with Domaine Dupeuble Pere el Fil Beaujolais. This wine was a mouthful to say and a mouthful to taste. This was an herbal wine with a dry finish. It had notes of cherries and blackberries with smoky scents. It went great with the strong flavors of the turkey sandwiches.

Dana shares the creepiness behind the walls of the Barclay Hotel in Los Angeles. This historical landmark has claimed a ridiculous amount of lives. 

Cindy tells us some hilarious stories shared by a listener who worked as a flight attendant. Come hear about the not so friendly skies. 

 

For dinner this week Cindy created a dish known in Aruba as Keshi Yena.  It is a delicious cheese covered chicken dish that incorporates raisins, olives, capers, and sometimes pickles. For dessert, Cindy presented us with a throwback to when airlines gave us pretzels and chocolate chip cookies on flights. Ahh, those were the days. She combined pretzels into a chocolate chip cookie bar and the combination was glorious.  The meal was paired with a 2019 Schlosskellerie Gobelsburg riesling. This is only the second time we shared a riesling on this podcast and it did not disappoint. The acidity of the wine was cut by the cheesy chicken and we were in heaven.

To top off the meal, Cindy presented us with some Cake Pops that brought us back to 2008 when Bakerella first introduced them and people lost their minds.  The dinner was paired with Folk Tree Chardonnay. It was a sweet wine that went well with the focaccia and the chicken.

The United States Postal Service has been making the headlines quite a bit lately. This week we talk all things mail. Nydia tells us about Jennifer Sanmarco, an unlikely spree killer and her violent rampage at a mail processing facility, which happened to be her former job. Dana takes on a heavy hitter this week, discussing the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski. While he was able to elude capture for almost two decades, he wasn't as successful as he would have hoped. Cindy comes in to educate us all with some little known facts about the postal service! 

For dinner this week Cindy made a Southwest Chicken Quesadilla, subtract the chicken and voilà- it's vegetarian! Cindy tried to blow us away with a NY Cheesecake topped with a chocolate bomb filled with strawberries. The chocolate bomb didn't explode as expected but the dessert was still dynamite! Dinner paired wonderfully with Prisoner Unshackled rosè normally $27 but Cindy scored at a cool $20.

We all heard stories as kids. If you were especially lucky, you heard some really scary ones too. But sometimes those scary urban legends come true and this week that’s what we’re serving up. Dana tells us about the urban legends of Bloody Mary and Candyman, and how the murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy was eerily similar. There are few things spookier than an old-timey insane asylum. Of course, now they’re called psychiatric facilities and while the mental health field has seen great improvements over the years, some of the atrocities committed within their walls still haunt us today. This week Dana shares with us the story of Nellie Bly, the investigative reporter who spent 10 days undercover in a mental facility. Was her exposé the reason behind the changes? Nydia tells us about the inhumane experimental treatments at these mental hospitals. Many are still practiced today! Cindy tells us about Pennhurst Asylum’s haunted history. Do you believe? 

 

For dinner, Cindy cooked up a meal worthy of any institution; Salisbury Steaks with mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, and string beans. For added measure, she served these on a foam tray. For dessert, we had peach cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Cindy’s inspiration came from an episode of Nurse Ratchet. Our wine this week was Agua de Piedra Malbec. This Malbec paired well with the earthy tastes of mushrooms and the heavy flavors of the meat.
