Mengqi Ji's marriage to Joseph Elledge wasn't going so well. The couple fought frequently and Joseph began to abuse her. Then the 28 year old mother vanished into thin air. Investigators suspected her husband, even before her remains were found in 2021. While they had a great circumstantial case, they needed something more solid linking Joseph to Mengqi's murder. It took plant DNA to crack the case!

In 1954, Marilyn Sheppard was beaten to death. Her husband, prominent surgeon Dr. Sam Sheppard stood accused. He maintained his innocence, even after his conviction. It would take new science to exonerate him. This case provided the inspiration for the TV show The Fugitive (and later the movie with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones). We explore a second case too, the murder of Ron Rudin. Blood spatter evidence was key in both cases. Both have mysterious endings!
Like all our cases this month, we build our forensic knowledge over the decades and finger printing is no exception. From the 1800's death of two children all the way to 2004 and the Madrid Train Bombings, it's still one of the first tools used in an investigation. On March 8th, 2014, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people including pilots and crew, left Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to Beijing, China. This was a routine flight and the weather was clear. Then, less than an hour into the flight, all communication and radar data was lost. The plane went dark. To this day, we're not exactly sure what happened to MH370. There are lots of theories, some more likely than others. And now? There's a video going viral showing UFO's making a plane disappear.

In July of 2003, Bakersfield, California investigators were trying to find a killer. A woman, her mother, and her three children were brutally slain and there were very few clues and even less forensic evidence on the scene. There were no witnesses. No forced entry. Detectives hit a brick wall until one of them had the idea to test the insects on the grill and radiator of the suspect's rental car to find out just where he'd been and if he'd been in California at the time of the murders. This had never been done in California before! They would never have been able to do this without the work of Dr. AG Mearns in 1935 who was the first entomologist (insect scientist) to use maggots to find the time of death of two murdered women.
