Before Ariel Castro kidnapped and held captive three young women, he held his wife Grimilda and their children hostage in their own home. He subjected her to horrific abuse and bizarre behavior. The abuse was so extreme, it would later factor in with her death at age 48. Even after she managed to escape him, Castro continued to destroy her life and the life of the man who tried to save her and her children from his reign of terror.

The police eventually settled on seventeen year old Clementine Barnabet and her father as suspects, accusing them of being in a Voodoo cult. Clementine (likely under duress) confessed to 35 murders. But did she do it?

On March 13, 2020 just after midnight, Louisville PD conducted a 'no knock' raid on the apartment of 26 year old emergency room technician Breonna Taylor. Breonna had no criminal record and no history of criminal activity. The no knock warrant was filed using false information and as a result, Breonna was shot and killed by police that night.

TW for offensive language

In the early hours of March 3rd, 1992, a police chase ended with officers beating a black man viciously, unaware they were being filmed. When the film was released to the media, it caused immediate backlash. Then, a 15 year old black girl, Latasha Harlins was murdered at a convivence store on March 15th.  When the woman who murdered Latasha received a light sentence with no jail time and the four cops were acquitted in the Rodney King case, Los Angeles erupted in a violent uprising. How did we get here? And have things changed?

Marsha P. Johnson was a transgender black woman of color who participated in the Stonewall Uprising in New York City. She did so much more than that, though. She fought tirelessly for civil rights, especially the rights of trans people, even when her own community seemed ready to turn their backs on her.  She was murdered at the age of 46 and law enforcement refuses to reopen her case. It remains cold.

Between April of 1971 to September of 1972 an unknown serial killer murdered six black girls along the Washington DC beltway. Police refused to make the connection between the killings until the fourth body was discovered. Due to negligence and other factors, the case has long since gone cold and the evidence is lost.
