Building your business on a third-party platform, where they own the platform, they control the sales, and then they pay you a portion of the profits, is generally referred to as "Digital Sharecropping."

It can work for many businesses – like this show is being distributed on third-party platforms like Amazon, Apple and Spotify, to name a few. My Kindle books are sold on Amazon and will probably make the most sales on that platform.

In April 2015, LinkedIn purchased online learning website Lynda.com for a cool $1.5 Billion. Lynda.com, at its very core, is nothing but a membership site, offering online courses with videos, checklists and PDF downloads.

So when you have a membership site that earns recurring revenue, you increase the value of your business as a whole, and it will be easier to sell your site to a prospective buyer in the future.

You've probably heard this statistic that says 8 out of 10 small businesses eventually fail. That's a colossal 80% failure rate.

I came up with two words to explain the best and worst business models: DOGPOO: Do Once Get Paid Only Once. DOSAA: Do Once Sell Again & Again. So DOGPOO vs DOSAA. You cannot build a long-term profitable online business selling one-time products, or doing work that gets you paid just once - like freelance work or a service that you peform for a client, and you get paid once for it.

If you are a digital creator, it is absolutely critical that you Own Your Platform, as I like to say. It is very easy to get sucked into creating all of your content on third-party platforms like Facebook, Patreon or Udemy. Butwhen you use a third-party platform, all of your content is stored within their proprietary system, you can't easily customize it or modify it, and most importantly, all of your users will be in their system.
