The Queen is stricken with a wasting fever as she frets over the absence of her son, Cloten. Cymbeline threatens Pisanio with torture in an attempt to find out where Imogen has fled. The Romans invade Britain, and Belarius can’t keep his sons from joining the fight. Posthumus returns to Britain with the Roman soldiers, believing Imogen is dead. Overcome with remorse, he takes off his Roman uniform and dresses as a British peasant for the battle. He disarms Iachimo, who begins to regret lying about Imogen. Belarius, Guderius and Arviragus save Cymbeline from capture, turning the tide of war against the Romans. Posthumus, despondent with remorse, changes back into his Roman uniform in order to be captured and put to death. He’s thrown into prison and falls asleep in his cell, where he’s visited by the spirits of his dead ancestors who gather around him pleading for Jupiter to take pity on him and restore his fortunes. Jupiter agrees to bring happiness to Posthumus, leaving a book near his sleeping body. Posthumus wakes and begins to read from the book, trying to interpret its riddle until the jailer takes him to be hanged. A messenger intervenes, summoning Posthumus. Cymbeline knights Belarius and his boys for their valor, not knowing their true identity. Word arrives that before dying, the Queen confessed she never loved Cymbline and that she planned to poison him so the crown would go to Cloten. The Roman prisoners, including Caius Lucius, Iachimo, Posthumus and Imogen (still disguised as Fidele), are all brought to stand before the King. Imogen faints when she sees her father.
