Dr. Charles Daniels explores the reality of what men and fathers need to be involved in their children's lives. Built off his foundational work in communities, he explores the importance of parenting structures and how they contribute to or create barriers for dads.
With an inside out approach Dr. Daniels and Fathers' UpLift are helping dads change the trajectory of their lives and relationships. Their organization helps dads learn how to parent themselves, deal with their inner child, and recognize the roots of their behaviour and actions. They also provide critical resources that meet the most urgent needs of black and Hispanic fathers.
Regardless of a father's experience there are many barriers that often get in the way of allowing them to connect with their children. Fathers' UpLift learned directly from fathers how the deeper emotional issues created significant barriers…but also how deeply they longed to be involved in the lives of their children. Many had been absent for many years but struggled to overcome the barriers – some as simple as picking up the phone. Fathers' UpLift has helped these men overcome shame, fear, guilt, co-parenting issues, financial hardship and all other barriers.

In this episode of The Dad Central Show we talk with Jerrad Lopes, a Christian author, speaker and founder of Dad Tired. Jerrad is a father of four who knows the challenges of being a husband and father while trying to juggle the demands of life.
In our conversation Jerrad opens up about his father leaving the family when he was only three years old, and the impact that had on him as a child. He talks about his journey as a young husband and father who had high hopes. He was motivated to be the best father and husband right from the start…but things didn't go as planned.
Jerrad shares about the difficulty of seeing himself failing as a husband and dad, which left him on the brink of divorce. At that time two significant events happened, 1) his father came back into his life, and 2) he looked at his own three-year-old son and knew he couldn't walk away like his father did.
As the conversation continues, Jerrad explores the many steps he took to grow into the person he wanted to be and have the type of relationships and life he wanted to have. He gives listeners great perspective, simple stories, and powerful insights about what often happens for men and dads as they struggle with relationships and life.
His work with men and fathers provides rich context for what often happens to men, and why we need to have the courage to be vulnerable, connect with other men, and work on reducing the amount of selfishness and immaturity that often plagues us. He leaves listeners with a simple question that can help any dad find perspective on what really matters.

In this episode of The Dad Central Show we talk with Bryan Ward, creator of the Dad Up Podcast about his fatherhood journey and the power of finding mentors.
Bryan created the Dad Up podcast as his youngest son transitioned to college. As he contemplated the next season, he realized he was going to miss being a dad and wasn't sure what to do to process these feelings. After a conversation with someone he trusted, he started the Dad Up Podcast as a way to share his passion for being a dad and help other men be the best they could be for their children.
Throughout the conversation Bryan shares valuable tips and stories from his own life, plus what he's learned from guests on his show about being a dad. He tells a painful story from his childhood and how it changed his choices as a father. He shows that when you take the time to evaluate your past experiences, you can make changes in the present that help you achieve the future you want to create.
Bryan also talks about his decision to create a personal board of directors and how that has accelerated his growth. From challenging his thinking to holding him accountable for taking action towards his goals, his example shows the power of getting mentors in your life to drive positive change.

This conversation explores the fatherhood experiences of Roger Dundas and Matt Prestbury. Roger Dundas is the Managing Director at Konvo Media and the Publisher/Co-Founder of ByBlacks.com. Matt Prestbury is the Founder of The Black Fathers Foundation.
From hearing about foundational childhood experiences that formed their perspective on fatherhood to the importance of structure and discipline to be at your best, this conversation is packed with insightful stories, humour and wisdom.
Both Roger and Matt experienced family separation and estranged relationships with their own fathers growing up, which impacted them in different ways. They talk about the challenge of living without their father's positive influence, what it meant, and how they have grown as men and dads as a result. They stress the importance of having a fatherly influence at important decision-making points in life as a young man. Matt and Roger restored the relationship with their fathers as adults and talk about the difference that makes for them now.
As the conversation continues, they offer best practices and tools to help dads become better people first, and better dads as a result. They talk about helping children with their mental and emotional health, listening to your children, and giving them well-rounded experiences to help them grow into confident and successful people.
A common fear they share about becoming a dad was wondering, "Am I going to do a good job?" and "Am I going to screw my kids up/have I screwed my kids up?". Working through those fears and self-doubts has helped them become better dads and men. The conversation also brings up the importance of having community for support as a man and parent.
They also discuss balance, the challenges of being a black dad, the importance of having deep and meaningful conversations with your kids, and having humility and patience as a dad. The conversation ends with two powerful messages for Black Fathers:
Matt says: "Enjoy every minute of it and think about the role of being a father-figure, and how you represent yourself. We are not who the world may say we are! Be a living example of the best of black fatherhood!"
Roger says: "You have to take care of yourself first! You have to work on being a better person first – body, mind and soul! Think positive thoughts and hang around positive people. "

This week Ed and I are joined by former Harlem Globetrotter and founder of coaching firm DGMindset, Derick Grant. In this conversation we explore Derick's early life and the powerful influence of his dad. Despite losing his father at 7 years old, Derick's dad persevered and provided a loving influence for his children. Derick's dad's influence is evident throughout this engaging conversation.
The conversation moves to exploring Derick's experience travelling for months at a time with the Harlem Globetrotters while trying to balance the demands of being a husband and father. He provides valuable insight and practices for dads who may find themselves physically absent but wanting to still be present for their children.
Delving further into the challenges of fatherhood and career, Derick talks about losing everything and how that helped him become a better father. Having to rebuild his family's life after a devastating deception helped him make positive changes to be more present and engaged, while balancing the rest of life much better.
The conversation then shifts to the importance of being intentional and the value of discipline as a father. We conclude with Derick talking about the important leadership role dads have, likening them to CEOs of their family. He talks about the importance leading with authenticity, vulnerability and relatability. He leaves us with a powerful message to his own father, expressing gratitude for "pop-pop's" words that have helped him succeed and that he says to his 10 year old son.
