Friend, as I shared in the episode today, I’ve had seasons where the “comfort zone” became incredibly uncomfortable. I remember when my husband, John, faced an unfair review at work. It felt like a punch to the gut. But looking back, that friction was the very thing God used to nudge us toward Arkansas and the six children we would eventually adopt here. Without the “bad review,” we might have stayed comfortable—and missed God’s best.

In Genesis 31, Jacob finally stands up to Laban. I love the grit in his voice. He doesn’t claim to be perfect, but he does claim God’s protection. As Lysa TerKeurst often notes, we can’t control how others treat us, but we can trust the One who sees the abuse and the hard work. Jacob reminds Laban, “If the God of my father had not been on my side... you would have sent me away empty-handed.”

Our Word of the Day is Witness.

In Hebrew, a witness isn’t just someone who watches; it’s the evidence left behind. Laban and Jacob built a pile of rocks as a “witness” to their treaty. But the real witness was the speckled and spotted sheep—the miraculous DNA that God manipulated even when Laban tried to cheat the system.

Maybe you’re feeling unappreciated today. Maybe you’re dealing with a “Laban” in your own life. Take heart—God is your Witness. He sees the sleepless nights and the scorching heat you’ve endured. He is building your “tribe” even in the middle of the struggle. You don’t have to act perfectly for God to do good for you. He knows we are failures, but He is for us nonetheless.

Where is “discomfort” currently showing up in your life—at work, in a friendship, or in your heart? Instead of asking “Why is this happening?”, ask “Is God using this friction to move me toward something new?” Write down: “God is a witness to my hard work, and He is acting on my behalf.”

Today we dive into the messy, complicated, and often heartbreaking household of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. It’s a story of “dreams, weddings, and babies, oh my!” But more than that, it’s a story of a God who sees the woman in the tent that everyone else scorns.

Friend, as a mom of seven daughters, I know a thing or two about drama. I even once bought a sign for my hallway that said “Don’t bring that drama around here!” because emotions can run so high when feelings and comparisons collide. In today’s reading, we see Leah and Rachel in a bitter competition, throwing maids and “mandrakes” at the situation just to feel loved or successful.

As Lysa TerKeurst often writes, we tend to get stuck in the “messy middle” of our stories. We look at what others have—Leah’s fertility or Rachel’s beauty—and we decide we are forgotten. But the uncomplicating truth we found today is that God’s ladder is always fixed between Heaven and Earth. As Michelle said so beautifully, “God is closer than he had ever thought before.”

Our Word of the Day is Remembered.

In Hebrew, zachar doesn’t just mean a memory popping into your head. It means to bring someone to mind and then act on their behalf.

When the text says God “remembered” Rachel, it means He began to move. But He also saw Leah. Michelle’s heart for the underdog really shone today as we talked about Leah—the “unpretty” sister who just wanted to be loved. Leah’s story teaches us that even when the love we want isn’t there, the love we need—God’s love—is already ours.

God was building a nation in the middle of a family feud. Eleven children in seven years! Out of the jealousy, the deceit, and the pain, God was forming the 12 Tribes of Israel. If He can build a holy nation out of that household, imagine what He can do with your current struggle. He hasn’t forgotten you. He is just getting started.

Leah spent years hoping her husband would finally love her because of her children, only to realize God already loved her in her longing. Where are you seeking “approval” or “love” from people that you should be receiving from God? Write down: “God remembers me, brings me to mind, and acts on my behalf.” How does that change your perspective on being “unseen” by others?

Friend, let’s lean into the “messy middle” of Genesis 27. I’ve spent 51 years reading these stories, but diving deep into the Hebrew literature recently has opened my eyes to the grit of these characters. We see Esau, described in the original text with animal-like slang—shoving food into his mouth, driven by the “now.” Then we see Jacob and Rebecca, taking life into their own hands to secure a blessing God had already promised.

As Lysa TerKeurst often reminds us, we get into trouble when we try to help God out. We scheme because we’re afraid His timing won’t align with our needs. Michelle noted today, “I take matters into my own hands all the time.” Don’t we all? We scramble to fix the drama, forgetting that God has a “longer view.”

But here is the heart-work: despite the schemes, God’s Word of the Day remains Good. This isn’t just “good” like a grade on a paper. This is tov—the Hebrew goodness that means uprightness, holiness, and a benevolent disposition toward us. A.W. Tozer said God takes “holy pleasure in the happiness of his people.”

Think about that. While Isaac was fumbling and Jacob was fleeing, God was still bestowing blessedness. He told Isaac, “Do not fear, for I am with you.” He says the same to you in your whirlwind to-do list and your family friction. God is fully good, 100% of the time. He cannot be anything else.

If you’ve felt like a “heel-catcher” or a “trickster,” or if you’ve been the one shoved aside like Esau, look up. Our God is weaving an incredible story that is bigger than your yesterday. He is good, and He is with you.

Where am I currently “taking matters into my own hands” because I’m afraid God’s goodness won’t show up in time? Write down that situation. Now, under it, write: “God takes holy pleasure in my happiness and His goodness is unfailing.” How does shifting from “fixing” to “trusting His character” change your anxiety level today?

Today we are laying the groundwork. We’re moving through genealogies—the seeds of nations. We see that while Abraham had many sons, Isaac was the heir of the promise. But even within that promise, there was a wait.

Isaac and Rebecca waited 20 years for their twins. Michelle, who waited many years for God’s answer in her own season of singleness, pointed out that Isaac wasn’t just “waiting” during those two decades—he was building a legacy of prayer. He pleaded with the Lord for his wife.

I love that God is a God of conversation. He didn’t just speak to the men; He spoke to Hagar, to Sarah, and today we see Him speaking directly to Rebecca about the two nations struggling in her womb. He cares about the details of a mother’s heart.

Our Word of the Day is Legacy.

A legacy is the total of your life experiences, values, and traditions passed down. My grandmother’s legacy was the dinner table—no phones, just connection. Michelle’s legacy is her willingness to go deep and truly listen to people’s hearts.

You don’t need a biological child to leave a legacy. Your prayers are an inheritance. Your faithfulness to God’s Word is a map for someone else to follow. As you read through these lists of names today, remember: you are a part of this unfolding story. What you do today matters for the generations to come.

Friend, as Michelle and I walked through the “unfolding family saga” today, I was struck by the raw intensity of these stories. We see Hagar and Ishmael sent away into the desert with just a bit of bread and water. It feels harsh—until you see God opening Hagar’s eyes to a well.

Michelle reminded us that God hears the pleas of His people. He didn’t just hear the great patriarch Abraham; He heard the cry of the boy in the wilderness.

But the moment that always gives me chills is the mountain of Moriah. Abraham’s faith wasn’t just a feeling; it was an action. He told Isaac, “God will provide,” and then he kept walking. He trusted the Father’s heart even when the Father’s command felt impossible.

We also looked at the beautiful “love story” of Isaac and Rebecca. Did you catch the correlations Michelle and I discussed? A father seeking a bride for his son, a servant (Eleazar, meaning “Helper”) sent to find her, and a son who was “returned from the dead” waiting to receive her. It is a stunning shadow of Christ and the Church.

Our Word of the Day is Provision.

God provided a ram for Isaac, but He provided His own Son for us. As Todd Wagner says, “Worry is believing God won’t get it right.”

Maybe you’re waiting at a “well” today, wondering if God sees your need. Or maybe you’re heading up a mountain you didn’t ask to climb. Trust the Father’s plan. He is setting everything up behind the scenes, providing exactly what—and who—you need, right on time.

She looked at her age, her past-prime body, and the decades of disappointment, and she laughed. But as we see in today’s reading, our laughter doesn't stop God's clock. He doesn't need our perfection; He just needs us to stay in the story.

Friend, today’s reading is a whirlwind. We move from the intimate tent of Abraham—where God himself stops by for a meal—to the devastating smoke of Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s a stark contrast between choosing the “pleasure and comfort” of the world, like Lot, and choosing the “altar and tent” of faithfulness, like Abraham.

Michelle and I talked about the “denial” Sarah felt when she was caught laughing. It’s so human, isn’t it? We doubt, we fear, and then we try to hide our lack of faith. But here is the deep, vulnerable truth: God isn’t looking for a perfect track record. Abraham lied about Sarah being his sister (again!), and Lot negotiated with angels while his world burned. Yet, God continued to connect with these flawed people.

As Lysa TerKeurst often notes, we serve a God who meets us in our depravity, not just our divinity.

Our Word of the Day is Faithfulness.

Michelle shared that beautiful definition from the Jesus Storybook Bible: God’s “never-stopping, never-giving-up, unbreaking, always-and-forever love.”

God didn’t choose Abraham because he was the most “together” guy on the planet. He chose him because He knew Abraham’s heart would keep turning back to Him. Abraham kept building altars. He kept seeking God.

Finally, in Genesis 21, the wait is over. Isaac is born “just at the time God said it would.” If you are in that long, silent gap between the promise and the birth, don’t lose heart. Your mistakes haven’t disqualified you. Your laughter hasn’t silenced Him. He is faithful, and He is working even when the smoke of the world makes it hard to see.

Sarah laughed because she was looking at her own limitations; God answered by pointing to His unlimited power.

Friend, as Michelle and I read about Abram and Sarai today, I found myself leaning into the “messy middle” of their waiting. God gave Abram a vision so vast he couldn’t count the stars, and yet, his reality was a wife who remained childless.

Michelle said something today that caught my breath: “Trust is a hard thing... it was such a daily thing, waiting.” It is, isn’t it? Waiting isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a minute-by-minute choice to believe God’s character over our calendar.

The road gets rocky, the language of those around us feels foreign, and we find ourselves tempted to settle in the "Haran" of our lives—a place that is better than where we were, but short of where God promised we’d be.

Friend, as Michelle and I talked today about Abram and his father, Terah, my heart just felt so full for you all who feel like you’re wandering. We see in Genesis that Terah actually started the journey toward Canaan. He took the family, packed the tents, and headed out. But then, he stopped. He settled in Haran.

Michelle shared something that hit me so deep: Abram was “looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” Terah stopped at a comfortable pasture, but Abram kept going because he had a vision for something eternal.

I’ve been in those “Haran” moments. When John and I were in the middle of our seven adoptions, there were days I felt like I was in a total wilderness. I knew God had called us, but the “how” was so messy. Like the Tower of Babel, I realized that if I tried to build my family’s “fame” or security on my own strength, God would have to scatter my efforts to bring me back to Him.

Do you feel in the messy middle? It’s that grit that says, “God, I don’t know exactly where this road leads, and it’s way harder than I thought it would be, but I am not turning back.”

Our “middle” might be messy, but it’s not the end. Abram lived in tents. He didn’t have a permanent house, but he had a permanent promise.

Are you settling today? Or are you persisting? Don’t let the difficulty of the terrain make you forget the beauty of the Destination. God is providing for you in the wilderness, one tent-peg at a time.

Where in your life have you “settled” because the journey got too difficult? Ask the Lord: “Father, am I staying in Haran because it’s comfortable, or am I persisting toward the Canaan You’ve called me to? Give me the eyes of Abram to see the eternal foundations You are building through my current wilderness.”

It’s a story full of heavy lifting and the overwhelming scent of a crowded ark. And then there is that stinging realization that catches us off guard: even after the storm passes, the “messy middle” of our human hearts remains.

So, friend, let’s look past the Sunday School felt boards today. Let’s be brave enough to dig into the deep, and sometimes painful, roots of what legacy really looks like.

Friend, have you ever looked at your family tree and felt a bit of a chill? As Michelle and I read through the genealogies today, I was struck by how quickly we can move from the miracle of the Ark to the mud of a vineyard. We see Noah—a man who walked with God—stumble in his own home. And in that vulnerability, his sons made a choice. Ham chose disrespect; Shem and Japheth chose to cover their father’s shame.

Michelle pointed out something so profound today: “God is a God overall... it just made [the story] so much more vast and big to me.” It’s true. Even in the lists of names that are hard to pronounce, God is tracking the heart-lines of history.

I know what it’s like to feel the weight of what’s been passed down. I’ve shared before about the “Grumble” in the Goyer household. It starts small—a complaint about the dishes or a huff at the traffic—but if we aren’t careful, we are planting seeds of disrespect that grow into entire nations of “enemies of God,” much like Ham’s descendants.

As Lysa TerKeurst often reminds us, our feelings are real, but they aren’t always reliable. You might feel like your past defines you, but your choices today are the actual architects of your legacy. I shared on the podcast today about my own biological father—I didn’t know him growing up, but I later discovered a line of missionaries and writers in my lineage. Even when the “middle” feels messy and disconnected, God is weaving a thread of grace.

Our Word of the Day is Respect. It’s more than just being polite. It’s about having “the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” It’s looking at the person you disagree with—or the parent who failed you—and choosing to act out of God’s character rather than your own hurt.

We can break the cycle. We can be the generation that stops the grumbling and starts the honoring. Your choices today aren’t just for you; they are for the ones who will sit under the shade of the tree you are planting right now.

Identify a “hidden habit” in your life (a way you speak, a secret resentment, or a recurring attitude) that you would be grieved to see your children or grandchildren adopt. Ask the Holy Spirit: “What is the root of this disrespect or discontent in my heart, and what is one specific way I can ‘walk backward and cover’ instead of exposing and complaining today?”

Lord, thank You that You are the God of generations. Thank You that no family story is too messy for Your grace to redeem. Forgive me for the times I have chosen the path of Ham—disrespecting others or focusing on their shame to elevate myself. Give me the heart of Jesus today. Help me to show respect even when it’s difficult, and let my life be a bridge of faith for those who come after me. Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY: Justice

Have you ever felt the weight of a choice so heavy it felt like it might pull you under? Today, as Michelle and I talked through the heartbreak of Cain and the overwhelming sorrow God felt over the world He created, I was reminded of the "messy middle" of our own lives. It’s that place where our sin meets God’s perfect Justice, and we aren't quite sure if we should hide or run toward Him.

In Genesis 6, there is a verse that makes my heart ache: “The Lord was sorry he had made man on earth and it grieved him to his heart.” As a mom, I know a tiny fraction of that grief—when you pour your life into your children and see them make choices that lead to their own destruction. But even in that deep sorrow, God was looking for a way to rescue. He was looking for a heart that still beat for Him.

Michelle and I marveled at Noah today. Can you imagine being the only one? To live in a world where every thought was evil, yet Noah chose to “walk in close fellowship with God.” It’s hard to be the odd one out. Whether it’s choosing not to engage in gossip or standing firm on biblical values when the world calls them “outdated,” walking with God requires a holy stubbornness.

I shared a bit of my own “messy middle” today—the weight I carried from a choice I made in high school to have an abortion.

For years, I thought God’s Justice meant He could forgive everyone but me. But as Michelle and I discussed, God’s justice is perfect because it is paired with His mercy. Look at Cain. Even after he killed his brother and offered excuses, God placed a mark of protection on him.

If God would protect a murderer who didn’t even ask for forgiveness, how much more will He welcome you when you come to Him with a repentant heart?

As Michelle said so beautifully, “God doesn’t turn His back on us.” We don’t have to be like Cain, walking away from the presence of the Lord. We can be like Noah, choosing to build our lives on the foundation of His word, even when the clouds are gathering.

Is there a “heavy burden” or a past sin you’ve been hiding because you feel it’s too big for God’s grace? Write down the lie you’ve been believing about that sin, then write the truth: that Jesus’ death on the cross was enough to cover it completely.
