  • Ep.17: Coaching… it’s not as easy as it sounds!

Many leaders develop their teams based on what they think is the correct way to coach, but coaching is a very skilled ability that takes many hours of practice, and loads of vulnerability.

Most people have learnt how to coach through what we have coined as, Tribal Knowledge and Preferential Delivery. This continued pattern of ‘hand-me-down’ skills development potentially thwarts true growth. The coach literally becomes the trainees glass ceiling.

To be truly proficient as a coach, we have to be willing to be buoyant in the conversation, using specific skills to pull out of the team member what they already know, even if they don't realize it.

Our goal as a coach is to help them make the association between what they do, what they know and how they can continue to build on that.

Coaching is more about asking powerful, curiosity based questions that help the team member express themselves. It's about being the conduit for their learning experience, not the controller of it.

This podcast is to help open our eyes to one of the most important skills we can learn - coaching. And impactful coaching usually flows on from powerful training.

  • Ep.16: You Can't Lead Without 'HOW'!

Have you ever given an instruction, or set a task and they just don’t do it!!

Well, a lot of times it’s because they don’t know how. In this episode of the Daily D.O.S.E™ Podcast, we reveal the key to successful coaching and leading. Whether you’re a manager, mother, teacher, or coach, it’s all about the ‘HOW’! Often times, we tend to give empty direction to fix specific behaviors? Without the how, it leaves it to interpretation and chance.

We have to teach the ‘HOW’ when we go to give a directive. We have to not only be able to spot the behavior, but be specific about HOW to achieve it. We have to ask ourselves, “Can I see them doing the ‘task’ from my instruction?

Remember, the magic is all in the ‘HOW’!

  • Ep.15: Are Closed Captions Dumbing Us Down?

Have you noticed of late how many of us are using closed captions and subtitles? I’m right there with you. But are we aware of the effect this may have on our connection with others?

Closed captions can be great when learning new languages, or if we’re hearing challenged, and even for those of us that might need some help staying focused, but for the mainstream, are we aware of the conditioning that closed captioning might be doing to our brains.

When we’re conditioned to have our focus majority of the time on the text, it can become easy to disconnect from the person speaking. We no longer pay attention to their expressions and micro facial (and bodily) nuances. We miss the collective impact of the words because they are not matched to the facial and body expressions given.

Maybe consider turning off the CC next time to give your brain some training. With the enormous decrease in our sensory acuity since the rise of technology, the last thing we need is less connection and understanding of our fellow humans.

Remember, USE it or LOSE it! 🙈

  • Ep.13: The Stories We Tell Ourselves

It’s tough out there! No-one is buying!

When times are tough it can be tempting to tell a story that justifies our unwanted results. Some might call them excuses, others reality. The key is being aware of the stories we tell, and rather than accept and explain, let’s lean into the challenge and investigate each situation to train for gain.

In this podcast we’ll also look at the negative side of KPI’s, and what we can do to use this data as insight into future coaching opportunities. Science shows us that we attract what we focus on, so rather that have an expectation of non performance, let’s look for the gold in every opportunity.

  • Ep.12: Need to Destress? Let’s Practice Box Breath Together

Have you ever had sensory overload and just wanted to take 5 minutes out to re-centre yourself? We'll guide you through the BOX Breathing Process so no matter where you are, you'll be able to pause and regroup!

Box Breathing works by releasing nitric oxide into the bloodstream to calm your nervous system, distracting your mind as you count to four, and decreasing stress in your body. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially during these busy holiday times. Whether you’re working the shop floor or you’re the one doing the hectic Christmas shopping, it can feel stressful. Just remember to take a few minutes to re-centre yourself. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3… 4!

So, let's take a breath together and begin!

  • Ep.11: “I don’t care what you think of me!”

“I don’t care what people think of me!”

We’ve all said it… But do we really mean it?

We have all been told that the worst thing we can do is worry about what other people think of us… But that’s not really true, is it?

If we don’t care what people think of us, do we even care about improving ourselves? In order to constantly do better, we have to know where improvement is necessary and feedback can help us unlock our potential. Let’s find out how to care and ultimately benefit ourselves!

  • Ep.10: Work/Life BALANCE? Really?

Often times there is shame around “working too much”… But what if you’re enjoying it? What if there wasn’t shame about the work you’re willing to put in? Work/Life balance can be different for all of us at different stages in our life. Our values and preferences change as we mature.  Some of us do prefer to be “9-5” and keep strict boundaries around time; “I work to live. I don’t live to work”. That’s great, but let’s also respect those who want to contribute greater than what’s expected. There are many +’s for both sides.

The key is how we feel - the second we stop enjoying our work (or its affect on our long term well being), it might be time to reflect and decide what will make us feel fulfilled.

Let’s ditch the work/life balance terminology - what do you think?

  • Ep.9: You Can’t Take People Where You Haven’t Been

The more we understand ourselves, the deeper and more powerful our leadership of others becomes ... but, it's not as easy as it seems.

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”

     - Joseph Campbell

Many of us can tend to lead people based on anecdotal knowledge, or our own personal interpretation - which is usually polluted with bias!

Most leaders and managers desperately want the powerful coaching skills required to support their teams, yet the biggest inhibitor to that is a lack of understanding of their own personal “Map” and that of others.

That’s the magic of the personal awareness journey - when we uncover the mystery of ourselves, we also discover the hidden potential in others.

Impactful leaders have an insatiable curiosity for self-awareness, and also have the drive and courage needed to continue learning the skills and behaviours that are essential to helping their teams reach their peak potential!

The magic we are looking for is in the work we are not willing to do, so let’s do the “work”.

  • Ep.8: What is your SPIRIT Age?

In a world where we are taught that our chronological age tells the story, it can be contradictory to how we actually FEEL - no matter our age!

What if we let our body tell us how it feels, and how “old” it is? What if we allowed ourselves to be guided by this innate wisdom in all of us? If we maintain curiosity and ask why we feel a certain “spirit age”, then we can either stop, start or continue doing what our body and soul need most.

In this episode of the Daily D.O.S.E, Terry touches on the importance of checking in with ourselves, and how debilitating, relentless negative energy, or even something as simple as what we eat, can impact our “spirit age”. So what is your “spirit age” today?
