Resilience with ACT
Psychology has a powerful approach for moments like this. It’s called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy — or ACT.
ACT is not about forcing positive thinking. It’s about learning how to live well even when pain is present.

Hold it together
means to stay emotionally strong and in control, especially when you feel stressed, sad, nervous, or overwhelmed. It doesn’t mean everything is okay.
It means you’re trying not to fall apart.
Examples:
1- When he received the call that someone he loved had passed away, he stood still for a moment, breathing slowly, trying to hold it together before breaking down.
2- When the news about the war came on TV, she felt her chest tighten, and her hands go cold. She didn’t know what to say. She just sat there quietly, trying to hold it together.

Rock the boat
To “rock the boat” means to disturb a calm situation by saying or doing something that creates tension or change. It’s often used when people avoid speaking up because they want to keep things peaceful.
Examples:
1- At work, he noticed that the schedule was unfair. But he stayed quiet because he didn’t want to rock the boat.
2- They were having a nice dinner together until someone brought up a sensitive topic and rocked the boat.

Like clockwork
means something happens regularly, exactly on time, and without fail.
Examples:
1- The bus arrives at the same stop at 8:10 every morning. Rain or shine, it shows up like clockwork.
2- At work, the weekly meeting begins at exactly the same time every Monday,
like clockwork.

Nitpicker
is someone who focuses too much on small, unimportant details and ignores the bigger picture. It’s usually informal and slightly negative —
but often said in a light or humorous way.
Examples:
1- At work, he’s helpful and smart, but he can be a nitpicker about tiny mistakes that don’t really matter.
2- She enjoyed the restaurant, but her friend kept complaining about the music, the chairs, and the lighting. She joked and said,
“Stop being such a nitpicker.”

Shady
describes something or someone that appears to be dishonest, unethical, or operating in a way that raises suspicion, often lacking transparency or integrity.
Examples:
1- When Greg showed up to the party with sunglasses on at night and refused to talk about where he’d been all day, everyone knew something shady was going on—turns out, he was just hiding a terrible haircut.
2- That guy selling expensive watches on the street corner looked shady—I'm pretty sure they were fake.

Get under sb's skin
To “get under someone’s skin” means to annoy, bother, or affect someone emotionally — often in a quiet but persistent way.
Examples:
1- He wasn’t rude, but the way he kept interrupting her slowly started to get under her skin.
2- She tried not to care about the criticism, but it kept replaying in her head. It really got under her skin.

Daily English Pod is a space for learning English beyond grammar and textbooks.
During the week, you’ll learn practical vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and real-life English- the…
On weekends, we slow down. Through ideas from psychology, philosophy, and real human experience, we explore language as a way to better understand life, emotions, identity, and growth.
This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in English language and literature based in Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.
The goal is simple but meaningful: to help you understand English deeply, use it confidently, and connect it to your real life. English here is not just a skill. It’s a gentle companion for clearer thinking, honest expression, and deeper human connection.
