I feel meaningful connection with someone when I receive a gift knowing they had been listening. Yesterday, Mother’s Day, my three daughters all gave me something that expressed in their own way something they have heard me say or noticed what brought me joy in the past.
My oldest daughter and her husband brought one of my favorite games to play. My youngest daughter gave me a lotion that is one of my favorite scents. My middle daughter, hot glued a sprig of lilac to the front of a card she had made by hand and filled with words of genuine appreciation.
Sometimes the gifts or support we receive is hard to accept. I have multiple times received gifts of food that I don’t really eat, for example. But I feel love and genuine appreciation for that person, who may not understand me quite as well as my daughters do. They are expressing themselves in the best way they know in the moment.
We are none of us, perfect. However, we are all perfect right where we are with what we know in this moment. I feel genuine appreciation for the thoughtful gift of a purposeful gesture of the heart.
Mary, on our call noted that when genuine appreciation is expressed, she feels a love that is tangible that penetrates and fills the soul. There is no faking when this kind of heart to heart connection is established. Although each of us expresses appreciation differently, when it is sincere, all barriers on both sides are dissolved.
Tyrie, one of our live participants today, expressed that she feels more willing to receive genuine appreciation after she has expressed it. Giving, receiving and then paying gratitude forward, perpetuates genuine appreciation.
Finding and having genuine appreciation for our place in life right now is the catalyst that opens the way for new positive experiences and more things to be grateful for!
