Supreme Court Has Rejected Texas Challenge to Biden’s Victory in the Presidential Election

Friday, Texas’s Shot it’s shot to try and void 20 million votes in four other states, clearing the path for Joe Biden’s victory when presidential electors meet Today in state capitals across the nation TO  cast ballots: 306 for Mr. Biden, 232 for the incumbent.

Texas, exercising the privilege states hold to file claims directly before the Supreme Court, accused Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin of violating their own state laws, and thereby the U.S. Constitution, by adjusting absentee voting procedures to accommodate the surge in mail-in ballots from voters following public-health guidance during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a brief order, the court said Texas lacked legal standing to bring the case. “Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections,” the unsigned order said.

Two justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, reiterated their previously stated view that the court is required to allow states to file cases before it, but noted that they took no position on Texas’s argument and wouldn’t have blocked the Electoral College from meeting on Monday. 

Mr. Trump himself sought to intervene in the case, and in a Friday tweet called on “the Supreme Court of the United States to follow the Constitution and do what everybody knows has to be done.”

The Supreme Court’s order indicated that Mr. Trump’s motion, along with many others filed over the past two days, was moot.

“The Supreme Court really let us down. No Wisdom, No Courage!,’’ Mr. Trump wrote in a tweet late Friday.

The ruling by the court not to pick up the case has left many feeling that this has been a pattern. How To Make Breathable Air on Mars

Colonizing Mars comes with a lot of challenges and quandaries. One major resource issue is how to provide enough oxygen for a Mars-base crew to breathe. Mars has only a thin atmosphere, with a surface pressure less than a hundredth of the Earth’s. Even worse, it is 96% carbon dioxide with only about 0.1% oxygen. Earth’s atmosphere is 21% oxygen.

NASA’s Mars2020 rover, Perseverance, which is already on its way to Mars, carries an experiment called MOXIE, a name imaginatively contrived from Mars OXygen In situ Experiment.

MOXIE’s purpose is to demonstrate that oxygen can be made from the carbon dioxide in Mars’s atmosphere by using electricity to split it into a mixture of oxygen and carbon monoxide, via a process called electrolysis. If this works as expected, the oxygen could be collected and used to give colonists something to breathe or as a component in fuel. The carbon monoxide would be unwanted, and would be vented back into the martian atmosphere.

In the new study, a team from Washington University in the US, demonstrate how electrolysis can be used efficiently to produce oxygen and hydrogen simultaneously from brine. It turns out that when you start from a concentrated solution of magnesium perchlorate, it is relatively easy to split the water component of the brine into oxygen and hydrogen using electrolysis.

Magnesium perchlorate is what the briny water at and near the surface of Mars appears to consist of, as seen for example when liquid droplets appeared on the legs of NASA’s Phoenix lander, which touched down in Mars’s far north in 2008. The Curiosity rover has also found evidence of calcium perchlorate brine just south of the martian equator.

If you land where there is brine available, the new study argues, you could make as much oxygen as you like – provided you have unlimited brine and power.

As Springs Church has been fined more than $32,000 for holding drive-in services in violation of the COVID restrictions, receiving numerous tickets, Fontaine filed suit to seek an junction. His attorney argued that the prohibition on church gatherings violates the Charter of Rights and Freedom and contended that the order seems to refer only to gatherings of people and not parking lots of vehicles.

“It’s a gathering, but it’s a gathering with a person self-isolated in their vehicles,” attorney Kevin Williams told CTV News.

However, Justice Joyal disagreed, stating, “The congregation attending in cars are persons. They are persons who have attended for a common purpose.”

Attorneys representing the Province of Manitoba asserted that the church had provided no evidence that it is more beneficial for the people to listen to the services in their cars than it is for them to stay at home and watch on YouTube or Facebook.

Springs Church, while now offering online only services, says that the restrictions just don’t add up.

“You can spend about the equivalent of a church service in Costco and you can physically get out of your car, so it seems to be a double standard there,” member Tim Sanderson told Global News.

Trump Joins the 17 States’ Appeal to the Supreme Court

President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to let him join a long-shot lawsuit by Texas seeking to overturn his election loss by throwing out the voting results in four states, litigation that also drew support from 17 other states.

In a court filing, Trump asked to intervene in the Texas lawsuit, the latest litigation to try to undo Democratic President-elect Joe Biden's victory over the Republican incumbent in the Nov. 3 election. In a separate brief, lawyers for 17 states led by Missouri's Republican Attorney General Eric Schmitt also urged the nine justices to hear the case.

Efforts in the courts on behalf of Trump challenging the election results so far have failed.

U.S. Supreme Court will hear Texas' lawsuit against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin over potential voter fraud. The case was added to the Supreme Court docket today.

The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit with the U.S. Supreme court against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin claiming their election procedures violate the Constitution.

According to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the four states violated the Electors Clause of the Constitution when they made changes to voting rules and procedures without going through the state legislatures. The lawsuit also alleges that the states violated the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause because there were differences in voting rules and procedures in the various counties within the states, and that resulted in "voting irregularities."

Texas has requested that the Supreme Court order the states to allow its legislatures to appoint their electors.

Supreme Court Declines to Hear Oregon Case to Prevent Cross-Dressing Girl in Boy’s Locker Rooms

On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a case from parents in Oregon who want to stop transgender students from using locker rooms and bathrooms with students of the same biological sex, the Associated Press reported. “The petition filed by the advocacy group Parents for Privacy was rejected by the justices without comment,” Law and Crime stated.

The case, Parents for Privacy v. Barr, involved a high school student in Oregon who is biologically a girl but says she is a boy. The Dallas School district in Oregon’s policy gave the student the right to share locker rooms and bathrooms with boys. In 2017, parents of students in the school sued the district, arguing that the policy infringed on the privacy rights of their children.

U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez dismissed the action in 2018, prompting the parents to appeal the decision.

In July 2019, the Ninth Circuit took on the case, and explained the case as follows: “The Dallas School District No. 2 implemented a Student Safety Plan after a student who had been born and who remained biologically female publicly identified as a boy, and asked school officials to allow him [her] to use the boys’ bathroom and locker room. The Plan acknowledged the student as a ‘transgender male’ and permitted him [her] to use the boys’ locker room and bathroom facilities with his peers.”

Facebook Privileges Some Hate Speech Over Other Hate Speech

Washington Post Reports: Facebook is embarking on a major overhaul of its algorithms that detect hate speech, according to internal documents, reversing years of so-called “race-blind” practices.

Those practices resulted in the company being more vigilant about removing slurs lobbed against White users while flagging and deleting innocuous posts by people of color on the platform.

The overhaul, which is known as the WoW Project and is in its early stages, involves re-engineering Facebook’s automated moderation systems to get better at detecting and automatically deleting hateful language that is considered “the worst of the worst,” according to internal documents describing the project obtained by The Washington Post. The “worst of the worst” includes slurs directed at Blacks, Muslims, people of more than one race, the LGBTQ community and Jews, according to the documents.

As one way to assess severity, Facebook assigned different types of attacks numerical scores weighted based on their perceived harm. For example, the company’s systems would now place a higher priority on automatically removing statements such as “Gay people are disgusting” than “Men are pigs.”

Facebook has long banned hate speech — defined as violent or dehumanizing speech — based on race, gender, sexuality and other protected characteristics. It owns Instagram and has the same hate speech policies there. But before the overhaul, the company’s algorithms and policies did not make a distinction between groups that were more likely to be targets of hate speech versus those that have not been historically marginalized. Comments like “White people are stupid” were treated the same as anti-Semitic or racist slurs.

In the first phase of the project, which was announced internally to a small group in October, engineers said they had changed the company’s systems to deprioritize policing contemptuous comments about “Whites,” “men” and “Americans.” Facebook still considers such attacks to be hate speech, and users can still report it to the company. However, the company’s technology now treats them as “low-sensitivity” — or less likely to be harmful — so that they are no longer automatically deleted by the company’s algorithms. That means roughly 10,000 fewer posts are now being deleted each day, according to the documents.

Rescind and replace regulations restricting coverage of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act; 

and  Eliminate discrimination against beneficiaries in charitable choice and faith-based initiatives.

Major corporations Nike and Coca-Cola are reportedly pushing back on legislation that would crack down on forced labor in China. The New York Times reported Sunday that the two companies have joined several others in an effort to put pressure on Congress “to weaken a bill that would ban imported goods made with forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region.” 

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act has bipartisan support in Congress and is designed to ban certain goods that are produced in China with the aid of forced labor, particularly at the expense of religious minorities like the Uyghur Muslims.

Its passage would also force corporations to place their own supply chains under a proverbial microscope in order to ensure that they’re avoiding suppliers who utilized such labor sources.

Tech giant Apple and even the United States Chamber of Commerce have also pushed back on the legislation, according to The New York Times.

But the legislation, called the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, has become the target of multinational companies including Apple whose
