The fires have killed at least 33 people across the states and dozens more are missing. More than 1 million acres of land in Oregon have been burned and at least 10% of the state’s population is in evacuation zones. The state has dealt with the worst destruction as blazes have already decimated two towns.  

In Oregon, more than 40,000 people have fled their homes and many are still missing, according to Gov. Kate Brown. The state is preparing for a “mass fatality event” and expects to see high winds on Sunday that will make fighting the fires more difficult. 

Authorities said a man has been arrested and charged with arson in connection with a fire in southern Oregon that has burned hundreds of homes. Oregon’s state fire marshal Jim Walker, who has served since 2014, has resigned after being placed on administrative leave on Saturday afternoon, according to the state police department. The police department said it was “conducting an internal personnel investigation.”

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said the amount of land burned by the fires in just the past five days amounts to the state’s second-worst fire season following the season in 2015, and said the fires should be called climate fires, not wildfires. Fires in the state destroyed most of the homes in the town of Malden and killed a 1-year-old boy. 

“This is not an act of God,” Inslee said. “This has happened because we have changed the climate of the state of Washington in dramatic ways.”

Inslee said it’s “maddening” that Trump denies climate change is fueling the fires: “The only moisture in eastern Washington was the tears of people who have lost their homes ... and no——w we have a blow torch over our states in the West, which is climate change.”

Dr. Li-Meng Yan, a scientist who says she did some of the earliest research into COVID-19 last year, made the comments Friday during an interview on the British talk show “Loose Women.”

When asked where the deadly virus that has killed more than 900,000 around the globe comes from, Yan — speaking via video chat from a secret location — replied, “It comes from the lab — the lab in Wuhan and the lab is controlled by China’s government.”

In April, Yan reportedly fled Hong Kong and escaped to America to raise awareness about the pandemic.

Now, she said, she is planning to release scientific evidence to prove that the virus was made inside a lab in Wuhan.

“The genome sequence is like a human fingerprint,” she told the talk show. “So based on this, you can identify these things. I use the evidence … to tell people why this has come from the lab in China, why they are the only ones who made it.”

Yan added, “Anyone, even if you have no biology knowledge, you can read it, and you can check and identify and verify by yourself.”

A new Gallup poll is out September 8, and things ain’t looking good for sports. 

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the first time in Gallup's 20 years of tracking Americans' views of various business and industry sectors, farming and agriculture is the clear leader. The former top-ranking industries -- restaurants and computers -- remain in the top four, with the grocery industry rounding out the group. Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry's image has improved modestly since last year, and it has yielded the "worst rated" distinction back to the federal government.

This year's rankings reflect significant changes in the ratings of six industries, three of which are delivering vital goods and services to Americans during the pandemic. These three -- healthcare, farming and pharmaceuticals -- are all rated more positively this year than in 2019, although where they rank on the list differs.

Farming and agriculture was already among the top-rated industries before 2020, but it has now moved to No. 1 with a 69% positive rating -- an 11-percentage-point increase.

With a 13-point increase to 51%, the healthcare industry has advanced from the third-lowest-ranked industry to near the middle of the pack. This is the first time in the 20 years of Gallup measurement that a majority of Americans have rated healthcare positively. The latest reading mirrors the increase in Americans' confidence in the medical system that Gallup found earlier this year.

The pharmaceutical industry's positive rating has increased seven points to 34%. The industry is now the second-lowest-rated on a net (positive minus negative rating) basis.

Additionally, the internet industry has seen a six-point increase in its positive rating to 49%. It still lags behind the computer industry (at 56%), but the gap is narrower than usual.

Rather than engendering sympathy from Americans, the travel industry, which has been decimated by social distancing requirements, as well as by people's reluctance to fly and stay in hotels, has seen its positive rating slip 11 points to 41%.

The biggest slide, however, has been for the sports industry, with its positive score falling 15 points -- from 45% to 30%.

The sports industry now has a negative image, on balance, among Americans as a whole, with 30% viewing it positively and 40% negatively, for a -10 net-positive score. This contrasts with the +20 net positive image it enjoyed in 2019, when 45% viewed it positively and 25% negatively.

This slide in the sports industry's image comes as professional and college leagues are struggling, and not always successfully, to maintain regular schedules and playing seasons amid the pandemic. Professional football, baseball and basketball games have also become focal points for public displays of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

While it's not clear how much the various challenges and controversies swirling around the industry are each responsible for its slide in popularity, it is notable that sports has lost more support from Republicans and independents than from Democrats. In fact, Democrats' view of the sports industry has not changed significantly in the past year, while Republicans' has slipped

According to WTHR out of Tennessee, a woman who died in February just recently received positive Covid-19 test results. 

A Shelby County man, Troy Whitington, says he was surprised to receive the letter from the Shelby Health Department and even more confused when the letter claimed that his mother was positive for COVID-19 and needed to isolate. 

 

That would be difficult, according to her obituary: the 66-year-old died February 16th. That was weeks before the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Shelby County.

"It's been 6 months, almost 7, since she passed away. There was no testing that was done at that time. On her death certificate it was stated she died, what the cause of death was, and it was not COVID-19. It was COPD," said Whittington.  

When Whittington called the Shelby Health Department to inquire about the letter, he was told that his mother took the test on June 20th, which was impossible since she was cremated. 

Don’t worry, everyone, mail in voting will be a cinch.

You may have caught wind of a story breathlessly published in the Atlantic last Thursday alleging that Trump cancelled a trip to an American cemetery in France last year because it was “filled with losers.” The story and that alleged quotation were provided helpfully by anonymous sources. 

John Bolton, the former US National Security Advisor, who released a book earlier this year entitled “The Room Where it Happened,” in which Trump and his presidency are criticized roundly, nevertheless debunked the anonymous claims of the Atlantic story. “According to what that article said, the president made disparaging remarks about soldiers and people buried in the cemetery in connection with the decision for him not to go to the ceremony that was planned that afternoon, and that was simply false," said Bolton. Bolton claims the cancellation of the trip was entirely over the weather conditions. 

Remember, Christians, anonymous testimony is not credible testimony. An anonymous tip might lead to go find actual evidence or a real testimony, but anonymous testimony is not itself true or reliable testimony. Why? Because it cannot be cross-examined. Biblical law requires penalties for false testimony. First off, the Bible requires two or three witnesses to establish any matter (Dt. 19:15). But then it also requires that witnesses be examined and cross examined. “If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong… the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother” (Dt. 19:16, 18-19). 

So in this case, if there are no credible witnesses, the Atlantic should not have run the story, and without credible proof, the Atlantic is bearing false witness against the president. And this is why we have defamation and libel laws, which Nick Sa

Texas teachers could see double-digit raises under program to retain top performers

“Thousands of teachers in Texas will receive raises over the next five years as part of the state’s plan to retain and reward high-performing educators.

More than two-dozen selected districts will get about $40 million as the result of 2019’s Teacher Incentive Allotment bill, according to the Texas Education Agency.

“This is a game changer for us as a rural community,” Matthew McHazlett, superintendent of the La Pryor Independent School District, said in a statement. “While a long process, it has been incredibly rewarding to see our teachers receive this recognition.”

That recognition comes in the form of a “life-changing” raise of up to $30,000 a year, he said.

The program requires participating districts to implement systems that will rank teachers as “recognized,” “exemplary” or “master.”

Master-ranked teachers can generate an additional $12,000 to $32,000 in revenue for their districts – 90 percent of which must be paid into teacher salaries. Exemplary teachers carry an additional $6,000 to $18,000, and recognized teachers $3,000 to $9,000, according to authorities.”

When a Bay Area Gym owner reached out to a couple police officers she knows in the neighborhood asking them if they needed a place to work out since their station gym was supposedly closed, the text exchange appeared to show they have access to the SFPD Northern District Police Station on FIllmore Street -- and police said Thursday that safety and cleaning protocols, as well as occupancy limits, have been established in department gyms.

For months, the city of San Francisco health order has prevented local gyms from opening its doors, but some city-owned gyms have been back open for months and are allowing city employees to use them, crushing private gym owners. 

“It just demonstrates that there seems to be some kind of a double standard between what city employees are allowed to do and what the residents of San Francisco are allowed to do,” said Dave Karraker, owner of MX3 Fitness in the Castro.

Gyms for police officers aren’t the only ones open. A sign at the Hall of Justice gym shows rules for use as of July 1 for its patrons, which would include judges, lawyers, bailiffs, and paralegals.

NBC Bay Area asked the city for comment Thursday, and were told only that the current health order does not allow indoor fitness gyms to operate, and per Mayor London Breed’s latest reopening announcement, privately owned gyms have to stay closed until at least the end of the month.

As part of Facebook’s latest study on how social media impacts democracy, the company appears to be paying users to log off of its products ahead of the 2020 US presidential election, according to new screenshots posted by Washington Post reporter Elizabeth Dwoskin on Thursday.

Last week, Facebook announced that it was partnering with outside researchers to study the impact its social media products have on society during the upcoming US presidential election. Facebook expects around 200,000 to 400,000 users will opt in to the project. Once they’ve opted in, the company will be able to see how they interact with its products, including both Facebook and Instagram.

“To continue to amplify all that is good for democracy on social media, and mitigate against that which is not, we need more objective, dispassionate, empirically grounded research,” Facebook explained in a blog post. “That’s why today we are announcing a new research partnership to better understand the impact of Facebook and Instagram on key political attitudes and behaviors during the US 2020 elections.”

The screenshots posted by The Washington Post Thursday show an Instagram pop-up asking users to select how much money they’d be willing to receive in order to deactivate their Instagram and Facebook accounts ahead of the election. Facebook gives the options of $10, $15, and $20 per week as some users would be asked to deactivate for one week while others could be asked to leave the platform up to six weeks total.

In the battleground state of North Carolina Wednesday, Trump trolled the Democrats by encouraging people to vote by mail and then also go to the polls on Election Day, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, in order to personally verify that their vote has been counted.

“They will vote and then they are going to have to check their vote by going to the poll and voting that way because if it tabulates then they won’t be able to do that. So, let them send it in, and let them go vote,” Trump said Wednesday in an interview with a North Carolina news station WECT.

He continued: “And if the system is as good as they say it is, then they obviously won’t be able to vote. If it isn’t tabulated, they will be able to vote. So that’s the way it is, and that’s what they should do.”

Most of the media took the bait and ran around in tight circles shrieking for most of the day on Thursday, repeating the mantra: it’s illegal to vote twice, while crossing themselves and sprinkling holy water on their heads.

Treating critically ill COVID-19 patients with corticosteroid drugs reduces the risk of death by 20%, an analysis of seven international trials found on Wednesday, prompting the World Health Organisation to update its advice on treatment.

“The evidence shows that if you give corticosteroids ...(there are) 87 fewer deaths per 1,000 patients,” she told a WHO social media live event. “Those are lives ... saved.”

Tom Seaver, nicknamed “The Franchise,” known as the greatest Met of all time, died Wednesday. 

Seaver pitched in the Major Leagues for 20 seasons, winning 311 games and recording a 2.86 ERA. A 12-time All-Star (10 times from 1967-77), he struck out 3,640 batters, which currently ranks sixth all-time but was third, behind only Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton, at the time of his retirement in 1986. Seaver led the National League in strikeouts five times from 1970-76, and he and Christy Mathewson are the only pitchers to record 300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts and an ERA below 3.00. Seaver's 16 Opening Day starts is a Major League record. His number 41 was the first to be retired by the Mets organization in 1988, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 with the third highest percentage of votes in Hall of Fame voting history. Perhaps his most famous season was 1969 when he led the Mets to their miracle championship.

Why in the world this administration and campaign is not informing Americans repeatedly that $1.128 TRILLION (with a "T") in profits have been repatriated back onshore since his corporate tax reform bill passed. 

I realize most leftists will continue the lie that those tax cuts were for the rich (my taxes went UP), but some are not lying as much as just not super smart people. But what all people, left and right, smart and not smart, can and would appreciate is knowing that the corporate tax bill brought almost $1.2 trillion back to the United States. Do you think that capital has come in handy in the COVID contraction?

The video documents once more using some of the old David Dalieden undercover videos alongside new courtroom questioning how Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers circumvent the Federal partial-birth abortion ban in order to deliver living babies and harvest their body parts. They have skirted the law by feigning the intention of murdering and dismembering the baby before it is born, while allowing for babies to be born partially dismembered while still alive in order to preserve the organs which can be sold for research and such. 

But remember, the same states that continue protecting these barbaric practices really care about the lives of black people, and they just want you to wear a mask in case it might help save a life. Excuse us if we are doubtful of your good intentions. Also, perhaps we ought to begin intending to follow these tyrannical shut down laws, while we often actually fail to do so. Oops.

On Tuesday, the Senate race in Massachusetts was between Rep. Joe Kennedy and incumbent Sen. Ed Markey. This race was viewed by many as the option between Establishment Democrats and the hard Progressive Left. Kennedy, the establishment favorite, lost, becoming the first Kennedy to lost a race in Massachusetts in history. 

Within hours after the polls had closed, Kennedy conceded the race, garnering only 46 percent of the votes, while Markey had 54 percent. 

"Tonight is more than just a celebration of a movement," Markey said in his victory speech. "It is a reaffirmation of the need to have a movement, a progressive movement, of young people demanding radical change, demanding justice. A movement giving voice and power to young people when for far too long they were ignored." Markey is a supporter of the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. Even Trump noted the significance on Twitter, pointing out that Pelosi had backed Kennedy, but he wasn’t extreme enough on taxes or the 2nd amendment.

“New York City may lay off tens of thousands of municipal workers. Even with this massive downsizing, it won’t be enough to stem the financial hemorrhaging plaguing the city.

The Wall Street Journal reported that roughly 22,000 government workers need to be let go to close a $9 billion deficit that continues to grow.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said about the dire situation, “Here is a way to think about it—for every hundred million dollars in city budget—that's about 2,200 city employees, on average.” He added, “To close a $1 billion dollar gap would mean laying off 22,000 city employees, which is a staggering number.” New York has about 330,000 municipal workers.”
