An 18-year-old Saudi woman fleeing her family has barricaded herself inside an airport hotel in Thailand.

She says she fears she'll be killed if she's forced to return home.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun says she wants asylum in Australia.

The incident comes as Saudi Arabia's human rights record is in the news, after a hit squad sent from Riyadh murdered government critic Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last year.

Turkey says US Syria policy is "irrational"

US President Trump's National Security Adviser is headed to Turkey where remarks about the YPG have earned a rebuke from Ankara.

John Bolton says the US wants a Turkish guarantee that it won't target what Bolton calls "Kurdish fighters" in Syria after the US pulls out.

Ankara says that's "irrational" as Turkey is targetting terrorists in Syria, not Kurds.

US government shutdown continues

Trump is threatening to declare a national emergency in the US if he doesn't get his way over a border wall with Mexico.

The threat comes as a partial government shutdown over the wall enters its third week.

India wins first test series in Australia

India has beaten Australia at home for the first time in Test series cricket.

The final test was washed out in Sydney but that didn't dampen the magnitude of the 2-1 series victory.

India first toured Australia in 1947-48. So this win has been 70 years in the making.

Golden Globes

'Bohemian Rhapsody' has pulled off an upset win at the Golden Globes, beating favourite 'A Star Is Born' for best drama.

29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest congresswoman in history.

S Arabia puts 11 people on trial for killing Khashoggi

Saudi Arabia has put 11 people on trial for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for five of them.

The trial comes after a hit squad sent from Riyadh killed the Saudi government critic at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Europe’s biggest cargo ship loses its load

Europe’s largest cargo ship, the MSC Zoe, has lost nearly 300 containers in the North Sea.

It was on its way to Portugal from Germany when it got hit by a storm.

Its cargo is now washing up on European beaches, where some people are enjoying a second Christmas.

China has announced its Chang'e 4 probe has landed on the dark side of the moon.

The moon is tidally locked to Earth. So we never see its dark side.

Now we shall, thanks to the Chinese landing, a first for any country's space program.

Russia raises Magnitogorsk death toll to at least 37

Russia has raised the death toll from Monday's blast at an apartment block to at least 37.

The explosion in Magnitogorsk was thought to be from gas. Moscow is probing the cause, but has ruled out explosives.

Trump says he wants to protect a terror group in Syria

President Donald Trump says the US wants to protect the YPG/PKK terrorist group in Syria, but doesn't want to keep US troops there forever.

Trump also noted that the YPG is selling oil to Iran.

The YPG is the Syrian wing of the PKK terrorist group which has waged a more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, killing 40,000 people.

US Congress

Compounding Trump's problems is the opening of the new US Congress today.

Democrats control the House, meaning Trump will face his first institutional opposition since becoming president two years ago.

The Democrats have not yet indicated how they might try to deal with the White House.

Stocks start out 2019 in a tentative mood

And finally,

The political uncertainty in Washington is continuing to feed into other areas, especially the economy.

Globally markets are open for 2019.
