US Democrats wasted no time flexing their new muscle in Congress by approving legislation that would end Trump's government shutdown.
The bill also ignores the president's demand for $5 billion to build a border wall.
Most diverse Congress in US history
The newly-elected Congress is the most diverse in US history.
The Democrat-controlled House features 102 women, including the first female Muslim representatives and the first Native American women.
29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest congresswoman in history.
Wielding the gavel will be Nancy Pelosi, the 78-year-old Democrat veteran.
S Arabia puts 11 people on trial for killing Khashoggi
Saudi Arabia has put 11 people on trial for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for five of them.
The trial comes after a hit squad sent from Riyadh killed the Saudi government critic at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
Europe’s biggest cargo ship loses its load
Europe’s largest cargo ship, the MSC Zoe, has lost nearly 300 containers in the North Sea.
It was on its way to Portugal from Germany when it got hit by a storm.
Its cargo is now washing up on European beaches, where some people are enjoying a second Christmas.
Man City end Liverpool’s winning streak

Manchester City have ended Liverpool’s winning streak with a 2-1 win in English Premier League football.
It was Liverpool's first loss this season. They're still top of the table with just under half the season to go.
