US Defense Secretary James (Jim) Mattis has resigned.
He'll end his tenure in February, after clashing with Donald Trump over the president's pull-out of US troops from Syria, and a planned drawdown in Afghanistan.
In his resignation letter, Mattis cited increasing US isolationism under Trump as a problem.
US says its withdrawing its troops from Syria
Staying with Trump's military policies, and his announcement that he is pulling US troops out of Syria was apparently the last straw for Mattis.
Reaction to that move has been mixed.
The pull-out comes as Turkey is preparing an offensive against terrorists in northern Syria, some of whom had US backing.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Ankara on Thursday.
They discussed a common desire to enhance regional security and ensure Syria's territorial integrity.

The president said Daesh was now defeated in Syria, so there was no need for US troops to stay.
The move comes as Turkey is preparing an operation against the YPG terror group in northern Syria.
The YPG dominates the SDF, a coalition of anti-regime forces which the US backs in the fight against Daesh in Syria.
N Korea says denuclearisation requires removal of the US threat
Pyongyang says it won't denuclearise unless the US threat to North Korea is also removed.
A statement carried by N Korea's state news agency on Thursday said the US threat extended to South Korea and neighbouring regions.
The US maintains a nuclear umbrella in the northeast Asian region by using bombers and submarines based elsewhere.
Yemen truce holds as UN mulls next steps
The UN security council is considering a resolution to endorse a UN-brokered ceasefire in Yemen's port city of Hudaida.
The ceasefire is now in its third day and appears to be holding.
