Indonesia is calling for international help after an earthquake and tsunami on Friday killed over 800 people and displaced tens of thousands.

The Red Cross says half a million people have been affected.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Macedonia referendum fails to resolve name issue

The prime minister of the former Yugoslav republic now known as Macedonia wants parliament to vote on changing the country's name to resolve a dispute with Greece, which has a region of the same name.

The move comes after a referendum on Sunday failed to resolve the issue. Voters said 'yes' to the name change, but the turnout was too low to make it valid.

The government doesn't appear to have the numbers in parliament to push through the change, so it's unclear what will happen next.

Iraqi Kurds vote in parliamentary polls

Voters in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region cast their ballots in a local parliamentary election on Sunday.

The election will determine the next president of the Kurdish Regional Government after Masoud Barzani resigned last year after a failed independence referendum.

Canada, Mexico and the US agree to replace NAFTA with USMCA

Canada and the US have reached a deal to revamp NAFTA.

The new agreement with Mexico updates the 1994 trade pact and gives it a new name.

It will now be called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or USMCA.

India's Maharashtra state enacts plastic ban

And finally,

Some good news for the environment. The Indian state of Maharashtra is enacting a plastic ban starting today.

The ban is designed to remove everyday plastics like bags, spoons and bottles from manufacture and use.

It's only one state, but the capital Mumbai is one of the biggest cities in the world with 18.4 million residents.

If it works, it could become a model for other cities and regions, and not only in India.

Iran has dismissed an Israeli claim it's hiding a "secret atomic warehouse."

State media on Friday said Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar who would not stop lying."

Netanyahu made the claim at the UN General Assembly.

Iran responded by saying the only undeclared nuclear program in the region was Israel's.

Two different paths through life

Trump's Supreme Court pick and the woman accusing him of sexual assault have told their stories to a US Senate judicial committee.

Christine Blasey Ford said Brett Kavanaugh's alleged abuse of her could have destroyed her life.

He denied it all.

US securities regulator sues Musk for fraud

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is accusing Elon Musk of fraud and wants him out as head of Tesla.

All 47 on board Air Niugini flight survive ocean landing

And finally,

Some good news. An Air Niugini flight crash landed into the Pacific Ocean near Micronesia on Friday, and everybody survived.

A flotilla of local people went out in their small boats and rescued all 47 passengers and crew from the sinking Boeing 737.

Erdogan says radical groups withdrawing in Idlib

Turkey's President Erdogan says radical groups have started withdrawing from a demilitarised zone in Syria's Idlib province.

The zone was agreed between Russia and Turkey - to try and avoid a major offensive by the Syrian regime - which is looking to retake the country's last rebel and opposition stronghold.

US, Iran trade barbs at the UN General Assembly

US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hasan Rouhani have exchanged broadsides at the UN General Assembly.

Trump accused Iran of spreading chaos in the world while Rouhani said the US cannot be trusted.

US sanctions high-ranking Venezuelans

The US has imposed more financial sanctions on high-ranking Venezuelans.

The latest round targets several members of President Nicolas Maduro's inner circle.

Among them are Maduro's wife and the country's vice president.

Maduro slammed the sanctions - calling them cowardly.

India's top court upholds biometric scheme

India's Supreme Court has upheld the validity of the country's ambitious biometric identity project.

It's called 'Aadhaar'. It's based on an iris scan and fingerprints, and the court says it will benefit the poor and marginalised.

However, the court also limited the government's plans to make it mandatory for a wide range of services such as banking in a move welcomed by the opposition.

Bill Cosby sentenced to three to ten years for sexual assault

And finally,

One of the biggest stars of American television, Bill Cosby, has been jailed for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman.

He'll spend a minimum of three years behind bars, but could spend as many as ten.

He's the first celebrity to go to prison following the rapid rise of the "MeToo" movement.
