Erdogan says radical groups withdrawing in Idlib

Turkey's President Erdogan says radical groups have started withdrawing from a demilitarised zone in Syria's Idlib province.

The zone was agreed between Russia and Turkey - to try and avoid a major offensive by the Syrian regime - which is looking to retake the country's last rebel and opposition stronghold.

US, Iran trade barbs at the UN General Assembly

US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hasan Rouhani have exchanged broadsides at the UN General Assembly.

Trump accused Iran of spreading chaos in the world while Rouhani said the US cannot be trusted.

US sanctions high-ranking Venezuelans

The US has imposed more financial sanctions on high-ranking Venezuelans.

The latest round targets several members of President Nicolas Maduro's inner circle.

Among them are Maduro's wife and the country's vice president.

Maduro slammed the sanctions - calling them cowardly.

India's top court upholds biometric scheme

India's Supreme Court has upheld the validity of the country's ambitious biometric identity project.

It's called 'Aadhaar'. It's based on an iris scan and fingerprints, and the court says it will benefit the poor and marginalised.

However, the court also limited the government's plans to make it mandatory for a wide range of services such as banking in a move welcomed by the opposition.

Bill Cosby sentenced to three to ten years for sexual assault

And finally,

One of the biggest stars of American television, Bill Cosby, has been jailed for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman.

He'll spend a minimum of three years behind bars, but could spend as many as ten.

He's the first celebrity to go to prison following the rapid rise of the "MeToo" movement.

Trump's nominee for the US Supreme Court is pushing back against sexual abuse allegations from his past.

Brett Kavanaugh went on Fox News on Monday and said he'd never done the things he's been accused of by two women already.

But even as he was denying the allegations, there are reports that a third woman is about to accuse him of sexual misconduct.

The UN General Assembly gets underway today in New York.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards warn of a "devastating" response to attack

The deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has warned US and Israeli leaders of a "devastating" response to Saturday's attack on a military parade in Ahvaz.

Tehran is accusing the US and Israel of involvement.

At least 25 people died in the assault.

Daesh and an Iranian opposition movement are both claiming responsibility.

Kavanaugh faces 2nd sexual misconduct allegation

In the US, a second woman has come forward alleging that Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, sexually assaulted her.

A former Yale classmate, Deborah Ramirez, says Trump's pick for the top US court sexually assaulted her at a party when they were college students.

The second allegation comes as Christine Blasey Ford says she will testify this week about her allegation.

She says Kavanaugh assaulted her when they were both in high school.

The judge denies both allegations.

Opposition claims victory in Maldives election

The opposition candidate in the Maldives has been confirmed as the winner of Sunday's presidential election.

Supporters of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are celebrating an unexpected victory.

Former Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, has been released from detention, pending bail.

Najib faces 25 money laundering and abuse of power charges.

They're related to over half a billion dollars linked to a state investment fund that ended up in his personal bank account.

Bail was set at more than 800,000 US dollars, and he has one week to come up with the money.

Kavanaugh accuser willing to testify to US Senate committee

The US now, and Christine Blasey Ford says she's willing to testify next week about her alleged treatment by Trump's Supreme Court nominee, if certain conditions are met.

It's unclear whether she'll get to tell her side of the story.

The US president seems to think Brett Kavanaugh is the victim here, even though Ford says he tried to rape her when she was in her teens.

Rafik Hariri assassination trial

In 2005, Lebanon's Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated.

Four members of Hezbollah are on trial in absentia for the attack that killed Hariri and 21 other people.

Today, the UN-backed tribunal handling the case will hear closing arguments in the long-running case.

A verdict is not expected for months.

Ugandan pop star vows to fight on

Uganda's pop star turned opposition politician, Bobi Wine, is vowing to continue his fight for more freedom.

Wine arrived home from the US on Thursday.

He was briefly detained before police took him to his residence outside the capital Kampala where hundreds of supporters greeted him.

Wine has emerged as a popular voice against President Yoweri Museveni, one of Africa's longest-serving leaders.
