The Olivet Discourse (Mathew 24-25; Mark 13; Luke 21) is a prophetic and apocalyptic argument against boastful ideas that the end-time fulfillment of God's promises could come to pass through the strength of man. Building upon the already assumed framework of the Law and Prophets, the intention of Jesus in the discourse is more than continued forecasting of eschatological events, but to emphasize the apocalyptic, end-time framework in order to produce a response of discipleship congruent with the God-ordained delay of the Day of the Lord. The response required of disciples of Jesus is that of a faithful, suffering witness, that follows in the example of their crucified Messiah. This teaching explores these themes against the backdrop of the life of Peter, whose fervent zeal in the strength of man was radically reoriented to follow his suffering Master, and whose writings, particularly emphasized in his account of the Olivet Discourse (Mark 13) lead us to walk down a similar path in following and proclaiming Him as we watch for His coming. The use of the phrase "good news" or "good tidings" from which we get the word "gospel" finds its first appearances in the Old Testament Scriptures of the Prophets. Not only are the substance of the "good news" in the New Testament found within the Old, but the phrase itself is also already in use before we get to the New Testament Scriptures. The phrase denotes the subject of Israel's final consolation, salvation, and restoration at the day of the Lord-- "news" which Jerusalem and Israel longs to hear finally brought to her as the end of her crisis. The Apostle's usage of the phrase in reference to their message concerning Jesus of Nazareth, His death, and resurrection, is a deliberate way of defining the nature of Israel's final apocalyptic salvation-- that it would come by way of Jesus' own crucifixion and resurrection-- a mystery revealed to the apostles. This orientation constitutes "[Paul's] gospel," "which is able to establish [us]" at the day of the Lord (Romans 16:25). In Christ/Messiah, the Spirit disclosed to the Apostles of the Lamb the "wisdom of God" and the "counsel of the YHWH" concerning Israel's covenant. That which had perplexed Israel for "long ages and generations past" had been revealed to the apostles through "a revelation of Jesus Christ" (Gal. 1:12). The Church of the fist century oriented their whole life, worship, and praxis on this revelation which revealed the "Way of the Lord," therefore they naturally called themselves "followers of the Way." The "mystery revealed" assumes a "mystery concealed," which has its context in the covenant of Israel and in the "scriptures of the prophets" (Rom. 16:25-26). The prophets "made careful searches and inquiries" (1 Pet. 1:10) concerning Israel's final apocalyptic salvation, which was already enigmatically prophesied in the book of Deuteronomy. This constituted "the secret things of the Lord" concerning YHWH's covenant dealing with His beloved nation Israel. This is the context of Israel's crisis and prophetic searching and it is precisely what was disclosed and explained to the Apostles of the Lamb. Jesus said that wherever the Gospel is preached in the whole world the response that Mary of Bethany demonstrated would be spoken of in memory of her. (Matthew 26:13) Her response was based on a context, a faith, and a hope that we need to understand in order to embrace the same wisdom and respond as she did. This message was preached at a church in the Arab World that ministers to Syrian refugees (about half in attendance the night of this message were Muslim women). Arabic interpretation is provided.

"Good evening. I’m so grateful to have the honor of speaking to you from the Holy Scriptures tonight. I want to thank these precious shepherds of yours for having me. Now before we begin I want to give you a quick overview of what I will be sharing with us tonight, and then we’ll pray together. I simply want to remind us of the solid faith and sure hope found in the Scriptures, so that we might have renewed grace to excel even more in sacrificial love and to also be found blameless in the Messiah on His soon coming Day.

- And so, I want to begin with a story of a young lady who knew and loved the Messiah.

- Then we will look briefly at the context and promises that make her story so profound.

- Before finally coming back to the story of this young lady and her extravagant response.

- We will end with encouragement from the Scriptures and pray together.
