It's just Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund on the mics this morning, as Kim Grinolds is in route to Tucson for tonight's game between the No. 7/8 Washington Huskies and the Arizona Wildcats.
Speaking as a Washington Huskies-based podcast, it's hard not to think about what a game between Oregon and Washington might look like in a couple of weeks if both the Ducks and Huskies take care of business today, but if they both win it's looking more and more like ESPN will bring their Game Day show to Seattle. AND, it would likely be a matchup of two top-10 teams (if the game was played today it would be 7 versus 9 according to the AP).
But we can't think that far ahead when there's a game to be played tonight, and the Arizona Wildcats will present plenty of problems for UW. The guys first start on the offensive side of the ball for Arizona. The main storyline is who will be the Wildcats' starting quarterback; Jayden de Laura or Noah Fifita? And does Washington have enough on defense to contain an offense run by either quarterback, especially since UA has two quality receivers in Jacob Cowing and Tetairoa McMillan, as well as tight end Tanner McLachlan.
It's also notable the 'Cats are likely going to be without their starting running back, Michael Wiley. Can a run game of Jonah Coleman, DJ Williams, and Speedy Luke be enough to keep Washington's defense off balance?
After a quick break the guys turn to the other matchup; Washington's vaunted offense versus Arizona's defense. Arizona's defensive numbers are decent, but who have they played? Or is it another case of 'Us versus Us', Washington's season mantra? Does Arizona have what it takes up front to play more exotic looks on the back end, or are they going to have to try and heat Michael Penix Jr. up with numbers?
And depending on what Arizona tries to do, how quickly will it take Washington Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb to play his own game of chess against UA DC Johnny Nansen? The 'Cats can certainly try and muddy up the pictures that Penix will look at, but can Washington create their own pre-snap confusion with their shifts and motions?
To finish off the pregame show, Scott brings us up to speed on recruiting, what he's learned about the prospects that took visits to Washington this past weekend, and how the prospect list is shaping up for UW's next home game.
Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week with Wildcat Authority's Jason Scheer to get the inside scoop on the Arizona Wildcats and what to expect from the home side when they host the No. 8 Washington Huskies Saturday night at Arizona Stadium.
Kim and Jason start by talking about the strange new reality of Arizona going to the Big 12 and Washington going to the Big Ten starting in 2024.
It's Family Weekend for Arizona, so they've called for a 'Red Out' Saturday night. The Washington game is arguably the biggest home game of the year, which will just add fuel to the fire.
Scheer spoke about Arizona Head Coach Jedd Fisch, how the UA fans have received him, and what kind of pressure there is on him right now to get the Wildcats to a bowl game.
The big talking point this week is the status of Jayden de Laura and whether or not he'll play for Arizona. Scheer talks about that, as well as what the 'Cats offense will look like if backup Noah Fifita gets a chance for his first career start.
Scheer also goes in-depth on what the Arizona offense looks like schematically, what they do well and who may not be available for the 'Cats Saturday night.
After a quick break they move to the defensive side of the ball and talk immediately about the impact former UW LB Daniel Heimuli and Oregon LB Justin Flowe have made so far in Tucson, especially under Arizona DC Johnny Nansen, another coach with ties back to the Huskies.
And how are the Wildcats planning on trying to combat Washington's high-flying passing attack? Does Arizona have the personnel to try and pull off schemes that would employ multiple defensive backs above and beyond their base defense? And in Scheer's opinion, where should UW attack?
Of course Kim finishes the preview podcast with the most important question; where is the best place in Tucson for quality Mexican food and drinks? Scheer delivers, as he always does.
Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger break down their keys on both sides of the ball when looking at Washington's weekend opponent, as well as their level of confidence in a UW win.
Washington Tight Ends Coach Nick Sheridan, EDGEs Coach Eric Schmidt, and Co-DC/LB Coach William Inge spoke to the media as the Huskies prepare for their first Pac-12 road game of the season at Arizona.
Washington RB Dillon Johnson, WR Rome Odunze, WR Ja'Lynn Polk, OL Parker Brailsford, and PK Grady Gross all spoke to the media Tuesday after a blustery day of practice at Husky Stadium.
Washington co-DC Chuck Morrell, OC Ryan Grubb, and Head Coach Kalen DeBoer answered questions from the media about UW's 59-32 win over California, as well as questions about their weekend opponent, the Arizona Wildcats. The Huskies travel to Tucson this weekend.
Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, Edefuan Ulofoshio, Dominique Hampton, and Jabbar Muhammad all talk about beating the Golden Bears 59-32 Saturday Night at Husky Stadium,
Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund break down what went very right, especially early, in Washington's 59-32 blowout win over California at Husky Stadium.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - once again get up bright and early Saturday to offer their insight and analysis into tonight's California-Washington game, as the Huskies and Golden Bears play the first game of what is now the final season of the Pac-12 in its current form.
But before they delve into the matchups between Cal and UW on both sides of the ball, they briefly go back and look at what the Huskies did to Michigan State last weekend in East Lansing, including a quick injury update and an overall look at the experience of traveling to Big Ten country with more road trips that direction starting in 2024.
Then the Cal talk starts, beginning with how the Golden Bears look on offense. They have two quality running backs in Jaydn Ott and Isaiah Ifanse and two quarterbacks in Sam Jackson V and Ben Finley, but how will they be used? And how does Jake Spavital's offense look at Cal now compared to when he was running it when Sonny Dykes was the Golden Bears' head coach?
After a quick break to pay some bills, the guys turn the tables and wonder how Cal is going to stop Washington's ridiculously prodigious offense, led by Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Jack Westover.
They also offer up a little mention to just how jam-packed this weekend is out west for quality football. The Pac-12 has three games where both teams are ranked in the top-25 (UCLA-Utah, Oregon State-Washington State, and Colorado-Oregon), and five of their six games feature at least one team in the top-25, including California at No. 8 Washington.
Scott also provides a quick recruiting update, including an official visitor in town for the 2024 recruiting class, and Kim talks about the three 2025 recruits that are also checking out UW on their official visits, before offering up their final thoughts on the Cal-UW game.
Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger break down their keys on both sides of the ball when looking at Washington's weekend opponent, as well as their level of confidence in a UW win.
