These chapters trace a critical transition: the old generation has nearly died off, and a new generation is preparing to enter the Promised Land. But when Moses disobeys God and strikes a rock instead of speaking to it, he’s told he will not lead the people into Canaan. Alongside this pivotal moment, we also encounter Israel’s first military victories, God’s mercy through the bronze serpent, and timeless lessons on grief, leadership, and obedience.

• It’s been 38 years since the spies first scouted Canaan—most of the old generation is gone.

• Miriam’s death marks a turning point in Moses’ emotional state and the nation’s spiritual journey.

• A new generation now grumbles, but their desires center around God’s promises—not Egypt’s past.

• The story at Kadesh revisits the same location as the original rebellion, making the leadership failure even more poignant.

• The staff Moses is told to bring is Aaron’s staff—the one that budded during Korah’s rebellion—symbolizing authority and rebellion.

• Obedience works—even when it doesn’t make sense. Faith responds to God’s word, not to what seems logical.
