The return begins. After 70 years of exile in Babylon, Ezra 1–3 marks the start of Israel’s second exodus. King Cyrus of Persia fulfills Isaiah’s 150-year-old prophecy by commissioning the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. But shockingly, out of an estimated million Jews, only 50,000 go back. Why? Because comfort in Babylon often outweighs the sacrifice of obedience.
