Everyone has a strong negative memory of the first time a movie really freaked them out.  This is an evolutionary mechanism to make it so you avoid bad things in the future.  Apparently horror movies have somehow managed to defeat this mechanism, because people love them.  They love being scared.  Dean is not only scared, but he's Scared & Alone, Saturdays at 8 PM central.  The name is rather ironic, because he is definitely not alone.
