One of my favorite studies on human memories and habits transmitted through our ancestral DNA is by Dias and Ressler.  Over several repetitions, they train mice to become afraid of the smell of cherry blossoms and associate the cherry blossom with pain. 

 

Shortly afterward, these males bred with female mice. When their pups smelled the scent of cherry blossom, they became more jumpy and nervous than pups whose fathers hadn't been conditioned to fear it, even though they had never felt the electric shock associated with the cherry blossom smell.  This plays out for humans and our ancestral DNA, too.  Are you intrigued?
