Berly and LA are back after the flu took them both out, and they’re tackling the backdoor pilot fans love to dunk on. A mysterious killer is targeting Chicago’s five ruling monster families, and Sam and Dean get caught between a grieving almost-fiancé, a shapeshifter prince, and a werewolf princess who’s done being told to stay quiet. Is it really as bad as everyone says?

• A monster speakeasy where a vampire feeds in the open and the bartender tastes the air

• Ennis checks a visitor with his phone camera, then pulls out a silver bullet
• “You’re with me, Romeo.” “You got it, Buffy.” And a phone call that changes everything

Written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer. The verdict: it’s not bad at all! The real problem is where it lands, slamming the brakes on Season 9 right when the story gets going. Berly’s fix: air it as the midseason premiere. Both hosts loved the monster family politics and David, and Dean’s “Godfather with fangs” says it all. The parts that needed more workshopping: how a human killer managed that first death, the werewolf leap attack, and that kiss.

In the lore segment, LA takes on the original five families of 1931 New York. The Castellammarese War pitted Joe “the Boss” Masseria against Salvatore Maranzano, until Lucky Luciano switched sides. Masseria was gunned down at a Coney Island restaurant, and legend says Bugsy Siegel had to shove the shaky getaway driver out of the seat. Maranzano lasted five months as “boss of all bosses” before gangsters disguised as government agents took him out (sound like anyone?). Luciano then built the Commission, which gave Al Capone and Chicago a seat at the table. Margot Lassiter is running a very old playbook.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 19, Alex Annie Alexis Ann recap 🧛 Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) is BACK, and she's protecting a troubled teen named Alex (Katie Sarife), who was raised by a nest of vampires and really, REALLY wants to go home, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Mama bear Jody: activated.

A deputy in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, picks up a teen runaway, and things go very wrong at the station. Jody calls in the Winchesters, and they quickly figure out Alex is a human kidnap victim who's been living with vampires since she was a little girl... and they're coming to get her back. While Jody hides Alex at a remote cabin, Sam and Dean track down the nest in O'Neill, Nebraska, learn exactly how the vampires have been using her, and discover that the vampire mom at the center of it all has her own tragic reason for keeping Alex. Meanwhile, Sam starts to notice that Dean is enjoying his work a little too much.

Episode Highlights:

• Jody Mills, wonderful to see her as always
• The boys learning Alex isn't the victim they expected
• Vampiric Stockholm syndrome, as Jody puts it
• Dean at the wood chipper: "Need a hand?" (There was literally a hand.)
• The vampires' very dark use for Alex (it gets worse)
• Alex's years-old bite marks that just... vanish (one episode after the show joked about continuity errors)
• Dean's dead man's blood trick, and some very cool decapitations
• Dean's "look at me, bitch" moment that made us go WHAT
• Jody finally facing her own grief (growth!)
• Sam's worry about how much Dean is enjoying the kill (the Mark of Cain is no joke)

In the lore segment, we revisit the vampire cure from Live Free or Twihard and dig into the real-life case of a man in Turkey diagnosed with clinical vampirism, whose insatiable craving for blood earned him a write-up in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics in 2011 and, according to a 2013 Smithsonian report, was eventually cured after two years of treatment. It's some of the darkest lore we've done.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 18, Meta Fiction recap 🪽 Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) is writing the story now, and Gabriel (Richard Speight Jr.) is BACK... or is he? Berly and LA break it all down on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Metatron opens the episode at a typewriter in a smoking jacket and ascot, narrating his own story like he's God. And he kind of is now. Meanwhile, Dean is brooding in the shower (we needed more), Cas is on the road with his motel room and no wings, and a familiar face pops up on a Casa Erotica tape before appearing in person on Castiel's couch. Full body shots plus close-ups, interesting angles and lighting. Thank you, Thomas J. Wright!

Episode Highlights:

• Metatron in the opening credits, and the jokes about continuity and retcons
• Gabriel looking right at the camera: Don't you need gas? (We should have known.)
• Dean getting some alone time with Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett). Gadreel does not leave in good condition.
• Metatron fingering Cas with all of human pop culture, so Cas can finally get references
• Cas in a SUIT for about forty-five seconds before the trench coat comes back. The audacity.
• Sam and Dean's holy fire plan (how many rings did they make, just to be sure?)
• Curtis Armstrong clearly having the time of his life
• Hannah's I knew it! moment
• The story is FINALLY moving forward (thank you, Robbie Thompson!)

In the lore segment, we dig into Gabriel's horn: how Gabriel became the trumpeter of Judgment Day in Milton's Paradise Lost, Armenian religious art, and spirituals like Blow Your Trumpet, Gabriel. Gabriel announces births and interprets visions, but when does he pick up the horn? Listen to the end to find out.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 17, Mother’s Little Helper recap 🫙 A schoolteacher makes meatloaf out of her husband, a former nun says it’s demons, and Sam works a soul-stealing case solo on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

A schoolteacher comes home, her husband doesn’t get up to help with the groceries, and he asks what’s for dinner. She makes meatloaf. Out of him. Honestly, Berly and LA have some thoughts about whose side they’re on. Sam takes the case in Milton, Illinois, solo, while Dean stays behind to “research.” Meanwhile, the townspeople are acting a lot like a certain soulless Winchester.

Episode Highlights:

• Meatloaf night, a candlestick, and blood splooge #80
• Sam takes the Impala solo, and Dean must really be into his research
• Dean drinks a whole bottle of brain fuel with zero effect
• Don’t get in the van, even if you know the driver (children of the ’80s know)
• A boy, a steak knife, and mashed potatoes in the wound
• Dean reports “real progress” from a barstool, and Crowley casts himself as the mistress
• An absolutely fabulous former nun in a matching green suit and hat tells the police it’s demons
• A 1958 flashback with Henry Winchester and Josie Sands at St. Bonaventure, where Henry says the wrong thing
• Glowing soul jars that look like Galadriel’s light, and Sam’s prerecorded exorcism
• A very unsubtle “hunter” pulls a giant knife at the bar, and Dean gives him a pep talk

Written by Adam Glass and directed by Misha Collins, who was apparently too busy behind the camera to show up in front of it. Both hosts call it a filler episode that dragged, even with a lot going on. Their favorite part was the 1958 flashback with Henry and Josie, which finally answers a question they’ve had since Season 8. Dean’s arc, though, felt odd. The gore: blood splooge #80 and some very bloody jail cell walls.

In the lore segment, LA revisits the soul lore from Family Matters with a guide to spotting someone with no soul. The warning signs: no empathy, can’t forgive, deeply cynical, no ambition or hobbies, egotistical, dead eyes, manipulative, and nobody trusts them. Berly and LA read through the list and begin to get concerned. About themselves. If you’re still not sure, the only real test is an angelic cavity search.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 16, Blade Runners recap 🍕 Crowley is in a hotel room in silk pajamas, surrounded by drained bodies, eating pizza and crying at sad movies. Nobody call Hell right now, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

The King of Hell is now a human blood addict, and Abaddon is taking over his kingdom while he's binge-watching. So Sam and Dean stage an intervention, drag him back to the bunker, and follow the First Blade’s trail all the way to a magical, invisible mansion. It belongs to a Men of Letters reject with a collection problem, and he thinks Dean would make a lovely addition.

Episode Highlights:

• Crowley drunk-dials Dean, and Sam gets to hear the voicemail
• Silk pajamas, pizza, sad movies, and a closet full of “supply”
• Snooki shows up as a crossroads demon
• An intervention, and Crowley goes cold turkey in the dungeon
• Crowley gets sentimental about the moment he and Sam shared in that cathedral
• Crowley steals candy from a vending machine, then roots around in an art dealer’s brain
• The antiquities curator gives Dean her card (only Dean)
• “We’re legacies!” Sam holds Henry’s box up to an empty field, and a smoky portal appears
• Cuthbert Sinclair, the Men of Letters’ master of spells, and his very creepy “zoo”
• The First Blade finally meets the Mark of Cain, and Dean’s arm won’t stop shaking

Both hosts liked Cuthbert as a quirky villain, even if he’s mostly a means to an end. Berly loved Sam and Crowley’s chemistry, and she pitches an arc where helping Crowley through his addiction helps Sam finally accept himself. The gore: a slit throat and a decapitation with a shockingly clean cut. Berly’s continuity complaints: a shapeshifter that transforms without shedding its skin, and a “sex scene” where Crowley stays fully dressed (she has a tattoo theory). Plus, the director, Serge Ladouceur, is usually the show’s DP.

In the lore segment, LA covers the real Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an 1888 Victorian occult society with ranked grades, secret chiefs, and members like W.B. Yeats and Aleister Crowley. Crowley’s hexagram later became the Men of Letters crest, so the bunker’s glorified book club has real occult bones.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 15, #Thinman recap 👻 A teenage girl is taking selfies, and there’s something behind her with no face... and a receding hairline. Odd choice, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

The Ghostfacers are back! Ed and Harry roll up in their van chasing clout and filming crime scenes, and their behavior has Berly and LA deeply conflicted about two characters they used to love. Meanwhile, Dean is sure the killer in Springdale, Washington, is a ghost, and Sam is sure it isn’t. The answer turns out to be far more depressing than either guessed.

Episode Highlights:

• A selfie with a faceless figure lurking in the background
• Blood pouring out through the slats of a closet door
• “Should I come with you?” “Do you want to?” The brothers are still at it
• The Ghostfacers are back! Well, mostly (Where are Spruce and Brittany?)
• “Say hola to my little pistola”
• Dean digs his heels in on “it’s a ghost,” and Harry gets to tell him he’s wrong
• Blood splooge #79 at the restaurant, and the Ghostfacers callously film the body
• Superman can fly, but Batman can’t: a sweet childhood memory with no “those days are over” afterward
• A deputy who is way too excited to finally use his taser
• Harry’s rocking chair speech leaves both brothers silent

Both hosts were thrilled to see the Ghostfacers, at first. As the episode went on, Ed and Harry’s lack of empathy got hard to watch, from filming a body to talking carelessly in front of a grieving mom. The hosts want a redemption arc and the whole team back together. The villains are so despicable that they almost distract from that. The brothers finally get a quiet, nostalgic moment with no fight attached. Meanwhile, Dean is getting very comfortable with a blade. The gore: the cold open closet and blood splooge #79.

In the lore segment, Berly covers Slender Man, a monster with an actual birthday: a 2009 Something Awful Photoshop contest. The internet piled on from there, with backstories and series like Marble Hornets, until he became an open-source monster. Months after this episode aired, a real attack in Wisconsin was tied to the legend, which is why the hosts suspect the episode has quietly disappeared from syndication. Editor's update: it hasn't.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 14, Captives recap ☕ The bunker is haunted, Dean is having a heart-to-heart with a coffee machine, and Kevin Tran has been stuck listening to a Winchester pity party, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Kevin is back from beyond the veil with a mission, a message, and zero patience for the brothers’ ongoing drama. Since Heaven’s gates closed, everyone who’s died is stuck in the veil, and Kevin has news: his mom is alive. Sam and Dean head into the woods to summon a ghost named Candy, then go after Mrs. Tran in a demon-run storage facility. Meanwhile, Cas gets a very awkward invitation from Bartholomew.

Episode Highlights:

• A cold open in a haunted bunker, and Dean’s two-word diagnosis: “Bunker’s haunted”
• The boys figure out who the ghost is, after the coffee machine has already said it all
• Dean’s heart-to-heart with that coffee machine turns into a pity party, and Kevin is not here for it
• A funeral for an angel’s vessel, and Elijah of the Penitents (with Andrew Garfield vibes)
• Summoning a ghost named Candy with a radio EVP setup
• Dean leaves Crowley three voicemails, and Sam says, “He’s just not that into you”
• Agents Nicks and McVie (yes, Fleetwood Mac) in their winter best, sweater vest included
• Linda Tran, scream queen, rewires her own escape
• Bartholomew loosens his tie for a fight, but only by one button
• Directed by Jerry Wanek: a mossy sepia escape scene and one very good low angle on Dean’s jaw

LA loved Kevin and Mrs. Tran, from that haircut to that pink coat, and the hug they can’t have is heartbreaking. Berly felt completely validated when Kevin told the brothers to get over it, and then the brothers ignored him almost immediately. The Cas and Bartholomew storyline felt like filler to wrap up the angel factions, and the angel fight continuity is still all over the place. The only gore is Dean’s bloody face, which mostly just highlights the jawline. Plus, Berly has a question about why there are fewer experimental shots these days, and she wants to ask Brad Creaser.

In the lore segment, LA covers the veil: the spiritual boundary between our world and the spirit realm. Traditions say it thins around Samhain, Beltane, Día de los Muertos, and All Souls’ Day, and in liminal spaces like crossroads and doorways. One wellness blog even claims it’s been thinning since 2020. Kevin, meanwhile, is stuck in the curtain.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 13, The Purge recap 🍮 Sam teaches yoga in a tank top, Dean steals pudding, and Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster) makes her debut, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

People in Minnesota are dying with a hundred pounds sucked right out of them, and every victim spent time at Canyon Valley, a suspiciously effective weight loss retreat. So Sam and Dean go undercover. Sam lands the yoga instructor job, and Dean ends up in a hairnet in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Sheriff Donna Hanscum is at the spa on vacation, and she immediately becomes Berly and LA’s new favorite character.

Episode Highlights:

• A hot dog eating contest, a hot dog stashed in a back pocket, and a deflation straight out of Stephen King’s Thinner
• Dean’s scruff continues, and he swears he was up all night because Rudy and Unforgiven were on (sure, Jan)
• Briana Buckmaster’s Donna, introduced with powdered sugar all over her face (and Dean’s)
• Slim Jim eats lettuce to stretch his stomach, and Dean declares that’s another reason never to eat lettuce
• A woman on a gym scale watches the numbers drop in real time
• “Is that a birthmark?” Sam is having an off day
• Dean is a little too passionate in his fitness trainer interview
• Sam teaches yoga in a tank top (five minutes of downward dog, apparently)
• A cupping session with meaty results
• Dean sneaks pudding into a basement corner and eats it like a raccoon

Both hosts loved Donna and the spa itself, and Berly would happily book a stay at Canyon Valley. Berly does have frustrations. The good monster vs. bad monster debate is back again, after Amy, Lenore, Benny, and plenty of others, and the “we’re not brothers” melodrama feels like a rerun. Both hosts also note some fatphobic jokes that haven’t aged well. The gore: a couple of very bloody neck wounds, and no splooges.

In the lore segment, LA covers the pishtaco, the Andean boogeyman who hunts travelers for their fat. The legend is rooted in documented 16th-century colonial violence, and it has attached itself to every new exploiter since. That includes a 2009 Peruvian case that got nicknamed the Pishtaco Affair.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 12, Sharp Teeth recap 🐺 Garth is back. He killed a cow, and then he got hit by a car. Berly and LA have questions on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Garth has been missing for six months, and he has some explaining to do. It turns out he got bitten on a hunt, fell in love with a born werewolf named Bess, and joined a peaceful werewolf congregation run by a very sincere reverend. Berly and LA are charmed by Garth and Bess, suspicious of at least one family member from the start, and concerned about Sam’s brain after yet another knock to the head. Episode Highlights:

• Garth and Bess’s pet names, and their cuddles on the couch

• Dean’s knife throws: the Mark has him hitting the heart every time
• Sam gets knocked out (again), and then his very long legs save the day

Both hosts adore Garth and Bess, and they’re glad the show finally explains where Garth has been. His line about missing Sam, Dean, and Kevin stung, especially once he finds out what happened. The brothers’ “partners vs. family” talk lands hard, and Berly and LA were surprised Sam got back in the Impala at all. The gore is light, since these werewolves eat off plates. And the hosts want to see Garth fully wolf out someday.

In the lore segment, Berly points out that the show calls its wolf god “Fenris,” which is the Marvel spelling. The Norse original is Fenrir, the son of Loki, a wolf so big the gods had to trick him into a magic ribbon, with the god Tyr’s hand as collateral. Fenrir is still down there, waiting for Ragnarok.

Supernatural Season 9, Episode 11, First Born recap 🐝 Dean and Crowley hit the road as the world’s least likely hunting duo, and they meet a beekeeper who turns out to be the father of murder himself, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

It’s 1863, Confederate demons are terrified, and a man with a jawbone and a leather jacket just kicked in the door. That’s the cold open, and Berly and LA were locked in from the start. In the present, Dean and Crowley go after the First Blade, the only weapon that can kill Abaddon. Back at the bunker, Sam and Cas work on extracting the last of Gadreel’s grace. Plus, a new Apple Podcasts review from Jen II, who found the show through the hosts’ collab with In Defense of Fandom.

Episode Highlights:

• 1863: Confederate demons, a jawbone, and a door kicked in by a very handsome man
• Drunk Dean at Gadreel’s bar, and Crowley shows up with a flower and a warning about the waitress
• John’s storage locker, plus an old photo of a hunter with Linda Hamilton arms
• Cas can’t taste PB&J anymore (in his defense, there’s barely any on the bread)
• Sam volunteers as the guinea pig, and Cas goes in deep with a very large needle
• Tara’s crunchy knee, her crunchy attitude, and way too much information about John Winchester
• A location spell burns a world map down to one tiny dot in Missouri
• Crowley clutches his pearls, and a beekeeper lifts his veil
• Tea in fine china, and Crowley’s trembling teacup
• Cain shucks corn at the kitchen table while Dean fights demons on the table (“You’re doing great, sweetie”)

Both hosts are smitten with Timothy Omundson as Cain: retired, unbothered, and devoted to his bees. Berly loved Dean and Crowley’s odd-couple road trip. LA loved Cas’s PB&J metaphor, of all things, which turns out to be about whether people can change. Berly does have one critique: casting Cain was a missed chance to diversify the cast. The gore is light, but one flashback is brutally sad. And the episode ends with a parting gift that stings.

In the lore segment, LA covers the biblical Cain: firstborn son of Adam and Eve, the first murder, and the original Mark of Cain, which was a protective mark, not a curse. Cain didn’t just wander off. He built a city, and his descendants became herdsmen, musicians, and blacksmiths. So the world’s first murderer accidentally kickstarted urban civilization and the music industry. It tracks.
