    TRANSCRIPT
You're listening to the live love engage podcast. on today's show You'll learn the essential quality that every entrepreneur needs in order to be successful at sales. Stay tuned. I am Gloria Grace Rand, founder of the love method and author of the number one, Amazon. Best seller live love, engage how to stop doubting yourself and start being yourself. In this podcast, we share practical advice from a spiritual perspective on how to live fully love, deeply and engage authentically. So you can create a life and business with more. Influence and income. Welcome to live love, engage
Namaste, and welcome to another edition of live love, engage. And I am delighted as always to have a guest with us on this show. I'm really enjoy meeting some really interesting, talented, amazing people. And today's guest is no exception. although I did realize, I neglected to ask you how to pronounce your name, but I'm assuming it's how it's spelled. It's Dr. Nadia brown. yep. You got it. Oh, good. Okay. I just was hoping Nadia wasn't, wasn't, you know, something different that , it looked like.
So, well, lemme tell you all about Dr. Brown. And so the way, the reason she has that is that she has a doctoral degree in organizational leadership, and she's passionate about helping women become more authentic, confident leaders who take charge of their careers. And not only that, she's also a sales strategist, a consultant trainer, and she's the founder of her own company called the Doyenne agency which
Is a sales agency that works with business owners, companies, and corporations to multiply revenue and awaken the consistent, closer within your sales team, using her proprietary, consistent sales method, which I love that. And that's what we're gonna, we're gonna talk a bit about that today. We're gonna talk about sales because I know as a woman entrepreneur myself, that when I first went into business and I had, and I realized that
Oh, that meant I had to sell. I kinda, I didn't didn't connect that originally. And, and you know, cuz I had preconceived notions about sales and, and I'm sure lots of you listening and watching out there may have had that as well. But I like to start off with asking our guests a little bit about their journey.
So what actually brought you to this point where you are this founder, your agency, cuz also in doing a little research on you, I saw that you not only have this doctoral degree, but you also had, you had like a BS degree in computer engineering. I did. So you've, you've come a long way from that. So I'm curious to know what, you know, what, what is this journey that brought you here?
Oh my goodness. well, I left corporate, obviously. I love corporate and decided to launch your business, similar to what you were sharing Gloria. I had the same thing. Like I was like, wait, what I have to sell now? Like, oh crap. And helping women leaders. And, you know, really be more authentic and powerful in their leadership roles.
But obviously I needed to overcome this big sales hurdle. And I often shared that I was, I'm the least likely person that would ever lead a sales agency because I didn't like sales. I was just like, I don't know how I'm gonna do this business, but I just wanna do the work that I love. And, you know, someone else deal with the selling.
Well, that didn't happen. That is not my story. I had to figure it out. And through that journey, there were quite a few things that I learned in that, one was I actually do like sales once I figured out how to do sales my way, but I also realized that there were some parallels in the challenges that women who were in mostly in corporate were dealing with in their leadership roles, that a lot of women in business were dealing with
When it came to sales and, I have to give credit where credit is due. So I have some very loving friends who gently and not so gently nudged me into like, girl, you need to really think about sharing your knowledge and your approach to sales with others and really supporting them. And that was the beginning of the conversations around launching a sales agency.
Oh, that's awesome. Now you, you mentioned there's, some similarities there in, in the corporate world and, and business. Can you elaborate on that a little bit? What, what are you talking about there? Absolutely. So one of the things that I talked a lot about before I started doing so much about sales was shattering your inner glass ceiling.
So in corporate, you hear a lot about the glass ceiling. Which we don't even have time to dive into all of that, but trust that there are there, there are challenges and opportunities. And a couple things though that I noticed was that while there are definitely challenges that women face, I'm not, not downplaying that at all.
I also started to find out that because we knew that there were these challenges that were in place. There were those times when we would say no to ourselves first or we wouldn't speak up, or we would start to buy into these stories that we've been hearing sometimes even before we were old enough to work.
Right. And so it was, you know, how do we, how do we get out of our own ways? So it better equips us to then be able to deal with the challenges that are very present. And when you look at sales, a lot of times we had those same issues that some of that just carried over for those of us were in corporate.
We weren’t pricing as competitively, weren't willing to talk about the money or ask for the sale. We would sometimes tell ourselves no before our prospect had, you know, so we started to see those similarities between the two. Yeah. That's and that makes so much sense. And, and I understand that because it is.
Selling is challenging. You know, we, there's this idea that, well, there's the stereotypical salesperson, you know, the, the car salesman and, and, and I think people then think, and especially even women that, well, the only way I'm gonna be able to be successful is I've got to sell to them as opposed to inviting people in to, to.
Invest in your, to enroll in what you're you're selling. And I, I know I had to go through this too, because I just, yeah. I had a lot of these things, the same and the same issues with even not pricing. And it comes down to, you know, valuing yourself. I think a, a lot of that and not, not valuing yourself enough.
But you talk about that there's there's. In particular, a, a critical sales quality that we need to have if we wanna be successful. What, what is that critical quality that all, all people, but probably even women in particular need to have if they wanna be successful. Well, there's one did not talk about a lot.
That's courage. I feel like we need a lot of courage to, to deal with just what you'd said, you know, the pricing. That discomfort to be willing to extend the invitation. I wouldn't even add to be willing and courageous enough to sell like you. And that is one of the things that I wanna help women with is you don't have to sell, like you said, the used car salesman.
And I think we all think him for excuse car salesman I get. And so it's just like, you know, how, how do I sell like Nadia, how do I show up to each and every conversation as, as who I am and invite people into my work. And for those times when it's not a good fit, because I think that's also one thing that we have been mistaught if you will, is that every single person, if they're human and they're breathing, they're fit and that's not always true.
and so going into those conversations with different expectations, And being prepared to say, you know what, Gloria, I don't think this is a good fit right now. Right. And then I would be more than happy to refer you to someone in my network and being okay with that, I think is definitely also part of that, that process.

I am Gloria Grace Rand, founder of the love method and author of the number one, Amazon Best seller live love, engage how to stop doubting yourself and start being yourself.
In this podcast, we share practical advice from a spiritual perspective on how to live fully love, deeply and engage authentically. So you can create a life and business with impact, influence and income. Welcome to live love, engage
Namaste and welcome to another edition of live love, engage. And I am delighted to have a guest with us today who is coming to us all the way from the other side of the world.
In fact, it's tomorrow where she is Because she is Elva Li and she is coming to us from Melbourne Australia. And I wanna welcome you first off, too. Live love, engage. Oh, thank you so much, Gloria. Thank you for having me today. I appreciate it because you are quite the powerhouse young woman and I, I love what you're doing in the world.
So for those of you who want to know who are listening and watching today, let me, let me share a little bit about what Elva is up to in the world. She is a luxury branding coach, a creative director and speaker, and she helps female coaches and founders create a soul aligned luxury brand so that they can land high end clients and increase their influence income.
And Impact. And she has appeared on been featured actually on the Australian business journal and has been seen on ABC, CBS, Fox and more. And now she's gracing us with her presence. And I would love to know… we're gonna get in. We're gonna really talk about how to create a soul aligned luxury brand.
But I wanna just first start off with if you would to share with our listeners and viewers on YouTube a little bit about what got you interested in pursuing this particular line of work and, and type of coaching, to be able to really help, help women in particular creating that luxury brand.
That's a great question. I think that is actually my sweet spot, but because I actually has 10 years of experience in business advisory and I'm have an eye for luxury branding. I always love brand styling and also I'm interpersonal development and has been trade and, NLP practitioner and a coach.
So this area work is kind of like a sweet spot for me combined Not only what I'm good at,wWhat I really love to do, but also, the things that I can help people to, up level in their brand and attract high end clients. So I'm very grateful. I find this sweet spot. I will call it, but it's not always a simple journey to find what lights you up and also what you can help with others.
I call it, the journey is always beautiful, but it's not always pretty sometimes up and downs and in your way to find what lights you up, what's your soul’s calling and what other people's want is a journey. I appreciate so much, but I grow a lot and I'm very grateful. I'm here today. Yeah.
Yeah. I can relate to that as well, because it is, it is a journey and I like how you say that. It's, it's, it's beautiful, but it's not always pretty. That's a good way to put that. That's really cool. Why, you know, it was interesting cause I have, I have talked with other folks before who, who deal with, you know, really helping to attract like high, high level clients and, and, you know, high quality clients and that, and I know this is something that a lot of entrepreneurs and women in particular, especially when they're first starting out, sometimes it's, it's.
It, they want to be able to help people. And yet at the same time they wanna grow their business. But finding, you know, that way to be able to attract high quality people is, can be challenging. So I like that you refer to this as actually a soul aligned luxury brand, not, not just, you know, a plain old ordinary luxury brand, but something that really connects with your inner work.
So why is that so important? Because without alignment. It's just like, I can give you the most beautiful branding, most impactful message. But if it's not aligned with you, you feel like putting a mask of someone you are not, and you just can't live on brand every day. And people can feel, nowadays people buy brands because they can trust, relate and connect.
But if you are not having a brand aligned with who you truly are, you can't really connect with the audience that way. So that high end brand is one part, but so alignment is really Important. And my work is all about helping women embody the luxury brand they are. And I always say luxury is not about Dior or Chanel.
No. It's actually about standing your high worth and owning your lead and power to lead and inspire. Oh, yeah. I love that. Yeah. One of the things that I, I like to teach people about, and actually I wrote about my book is the importance of valuing your uniqueness. So, because that is so important because yeah, when you're trying to compare yourself to others or, or you feel that you have to emulate other business owners or how they're doing it, you’re right.
That the, your potential clients can really sense that, and they're not going to necessarily resonate with you. You, you touched on something there that I, I think is important or, or maybe I, I wanna be able to expand, have you expand on it a little bit more though. Is, do you, let me phrase it this way, when you're working with a client, do you find that.
Sometimes there's this feeling of imposter syndrome, maybe that they're not that they have trouble trying to be able to step into that high value. And, and how do you help if, if that's so, then how do you help them to really own that value? Yeah, that's such a great question. Actually. I would say. Almost 100% of my clients somehow will have that kind of doubt and imposter syndrome.
And thinking to some extent they're not good enough for the work they're doing. So that's why I incorporate the inner work. That's what I call it, cuz my work has, three aspects. One is the inner work. It's about mindset and helping them embody the luxury brand and the queen they are and claiming their power.
Then only after the inner work, we move on to the outer work. It's learn the strategy to position yourself as a luxury brand and also create the online presence that reflect the superstar you are. And the last stage is the higher work. It's about create a soul alignment and also co-create a universe and leave your legacy.
So the three phases interact together because just as I mentioned in the beginning, if you are not embodying, if you are thinking, you are not good enough, if you are worried, what people will say. Once you put yourself out there, then all the outta work I give you makes no sense. So, the first stage I work with clients is really digging to their mindset.
And is there any limiting beliefs they put on themselves? Cuz Personal brand to some extent is about you. By that same time, I always say, it's not about you. It's about your message. Once you put your message out there, some people will say yes, some people will say no and you need to be okay with that and be the leader to embody your work.
And those who resonate with your message will continue the journey with you. And also it's about. Mindset about money, fame, because lots of clients were worried. Will, if I talking about I'm a luxury brand, will people judge me? If I starting to have the fame, what people will think of me? So that's all the mindset work we need to address in the beginning, because for example, money, money doesn't make you a good person or bad person it’s neutral.
It actually amplify who you already are. If you have a beautiful soul,...

You're listening to the live love engage podcast. On today's show, we're gonna be talking about trauma, understanding it, seeing how it impacts us and how we can heal from it. Stay tuned. In this podcast, we share practical advice from a spiritual perspective on how to live fully love, deeply and engage authentically. So you can create a life and business with more impact, influence, and income. Welcome to live love, engage.
Namaste, and welcome. I am so delighted to be with you again, for another addition of live love engage, and I've got a wonderful guest with us today and, she's gonna, she has a wealth of experience.
Let's just say that regarding the issue of trauma. And, but first I want to welcome Sarah Brassard to live, love, engage. Thank you, Gloria. Pleasure to be with you today. Oh well, I'm, I'm so looking… I had been, so looking forward to this discussion and, you know, I'll tell all over listeners and viewers, why in a moment, but, let me tell them all about you.
So she is the author of, “Inside a guide to the resources within.” She is also a 30 plus year spiritual teacher, trauma worker and life coach. And Sarah runs an online community, mastermind group and group coaching to help women heal and grow through hardships. And she also hosts the annual Trauma Recovery Summit, which is actually how we connected because I am proud to be one of the speakers on the summit this year, which is coming up Very soon.
And, and we'll talk more about that in a little bit. but first I, I love to always start in asking our guests to share a little bit about their story and really what got you interested in being specifically a, a trauma worker and I guess, and a coach, someone who helps people through, through trauma.
Yeah, I, I think I answer this differently every time I'm asked this question, because there's so many different facets too, is it, to trauma and to what we experience in understanding that we have actually been traumatized. For me, it was this propensity towards wanting to make everything on the outside of my life look pristine.
Polished up. I didn't want anyone to know about this tremendous abandonment that I had suffered as a young person. And, what that was like from, for my life was that my mom left our family. Life was pretty put together prior to that. And she left when I was 13 and then shortly thereafter, my father passed away.
And so what becomes just your life? you know, this is just my life. I'm a 13-year-old and I have brothers and sisters and we're all coping in various ways. And I would say that I didn't even know what that word meant when I was young. I only knew that it was this way before and this way after, and subsequently I, as I said, I just, I, I tried my best to put everything together, but after years and years of living outside, as I like to say, because my book is called inside a guide to the resources within.
I realized that living outside of your life like that, it, it wears you down at all levels at a physical, at an emotional, at a mental and spiritual level, and it's not sustainable. And. So ultimately it was my body that broke down and that was through, you know, bronchial pneumonia that had me in bed for weeks and skin conditions that, you know, just used to just drive me crazy.
And ultimately it was this, innate understanding that there had to be something better than this, that, that really I wasn't going to be able to live the rest of my life with this level of suffering. My goodness. Well, first, I'm sorry for, sorry for the losses that you experienced and. Thank you. And so much I wanna wanna go to here.
I was gonna ask, you know, how did this trauma materialize in your life? And, and so you said you were experiencing some physical issues with that. So when that happened, what did you, what did you wind up doing to be able to, you know, as you say, kind of put your life back together and, and how did you really decide that you needed to look inside rather than outside?
Great question. Great question. Well, there was this, this scene that runs through my, my mind over and over again. And it was at Christmas. And like I said, I put everything together in a really pristine way and I was good at it. So I sort of remember that as sort of this Martha Stewart Christmas, if you will, you know, children were dressed a certain way.
The house was all decorated and I was cooking a soup or something over by the stove and my beloved sister-in-law, big smile on my face, you know, came over and she looked at me and she said, “Sarah, Why are you so unhappy? I'm so concerned about you.” Oh, wow. And it was like something, somebody just cracked me open and there was a tremendous amount of vulnerability as we all would feel.
Right. If somebody had actually pointed this out to us without our asking them to. Yeah. But because it was such a level of trust there, it really woke me up. It was like, whoa, you know, they can see this. People can see this. And so, I put myself in therapy almost immediately. I found a cognitive behavioral therapist that I worked with for, for many years.
And it a trusted part of my healing team. And it guided me to, you know, what I do now, you know, my first thing, my, the, the, the first certification I got was in massage therapy, where I went and did a two year program that worked with cadavers. I mean, it was an in depth program that really taught me the connection between the physical body, the emotional body, the mental body, and ultimately the spiritual body.
So, I, I think. You know, if, if I could say anything to anybody it's, it's, you know, boy, trust your instincts. Boy, listen, if you can. I, I know it's hard to listen when you're in tremendously vulnerable places, but, if you can even listen to a whisper of that inner knowledge and allow it to take you down a path of learning, you know, there's a lot there.
Yeah. You talked about, or, or when I was doing some research about the fact that trauma isn't necessarily a big event, or because there's, there's like, is there a range of experiences and maybe you can describe what, what. What some of that would look like? Sure, sure. The way that I've seen that is as I hear psychologists and other researchers talk about capital T trauma or small T or Hard and soft trauma or whatever you wanna say there.
I distinguish it by saying, you know, hard trauma is, you know, that event, that life was this way for this moment. And the next moment it's a car crash. It's a, you know, it, it, it's a, it's a rape. It's, it's a murder. It's something that has completely changed your course of life.
Whereas soft trauma and I think it could be not to take anybody's value from, from their experience. But, soft trauma for me, feels a, a wee bit more complicated because it's more inbred in the culture of, of your life. Maybe it's, you know, a, a chronically abusive parent or, or whatever it might be like in my case, I, I say that one day.
It was this way, the next, it was another way. That's not actually true. You know, there was a lot leading up to that that I didn't wanna see. I just didn't wanna see. It hurt too much to think that that could actually be the reality of my life, but I, and I think there's a lot in between too, but I think that's sort of a nice little way to frame things sometimes where you think, gosh, what, what right
Do I have to this experience? Or. Feeling a certain way. One of the most interesting things I've heard lately is somebody say trauma is not a fi, a fact-finding process. And I like that. It's not a gathering of facts. Like if you have an imprint, I truly believe, you know, especially when you're dealing with siblings, like I'm one of five.
I would go to one of my, my Sibs and say, do you remember this? Gosh, it hurt a lot. And they'd say, yeah,...

    TRANSCRIPT
You're listening to the live love engage podcast on today's show how honoring your feminine essence can help you attract the perfect clients for your business. Stay tuned. I am Gloria Grace Rand, founder of the love method and author of the number one, Amazon. Best seller live love, engage how to stop doubting yourself and start being yourself.
In this podcast, we share practical advice from a spiritual perspective on how to live fully love, deeply and engage authentically. So you can create a life and business with more impact. Influence and income. Welcome to live love, engage.
Namaste and welcome to another addition of live love, engage, and I am delighted to have an awesome woman, she is a Coach. And I'm gonna tell you more about her in a minute, but she is up to some great things in the world. And I'll just give you a hint about really helping other women, entrepreneurs and coaches. So I wanna first off welcome Julie Foucht to live love engage. Thank you. I'm so happy to be here.
Oh, well, I'm delighted to have you. And I almost said welcome to the art of feminine business, but that's your podcast. we, we could do both. There we go. well, and that, so that does give you a hint. That is one of the things that Julie does. And in fact, I was, shoot graciously had me on her show a while back, but, what she is up to in the world for those of you listening and, and watching on YouTube is, she teaches female coaches, teachers, and healers who are frustrated with the traditional sales and marketing formulas out there, how to build six figure businesses that actually honor their feminine essence and her clients report having clear vision of their divine purpose, greater passion for their work. And Having the skills to attract perfect clients and. Even the best, one of all is to be well paid for their gifts, which is so important because I know in working the clients I've worked with, especially those who are, I think in particular, are involved in like healing modalities and things like that.
That they're not necessarily being Paid because they feel so heart centered that they need to almost give their stuff away, which is not good. And we can have a whole conversation about that maybe later, but I thought what we would start off with today is for you to share with, with our audience, just what prompted you to really start This having more of this feminine emphasis if you will, on your business. So what, what, what prompted cuz it was a change in how you were doing things, right?
Yeah. It was a huge change, way back when the, the housing bubble burst, at that time I was working my coaching business full time, which meant I would have two clients and go, oh, I'm exhausted. I need to go shopping. Right. And I was bringing in a couple thousand dollars a month. Well, my husband's business was in the development industry. He's a, he's a planner and the market crashed and his last client decided rather than pay their fees, they would just leave town and, and do a bankruptcy in the state of California.
Oh. Which left us with, you know, them owing us Tens of thousands of dollars. And, it kind of took his business down. So I needed to do something right. My little part-time coaching practice. And I did what you do when you haven't paid your mortgage in months. And you're rotating bills to like, keep the electricity on and shopping at the discount food store.
I unfroze a credit card. And went and hired a coach because I knew that if nothing changed, nothing would change. And she was great. I adore this woman, and she taught me the formulas and she taught me how to drive. And she taught me that you don't do two hours of work and then go, oh I'm exhausted. Right.
She really taught me how to do business the masculine way. And I was doing well with that, but it was starting to feel like a drain, you know, and, and my… I was starting to, to not feel as inspired. And, I was on my way to my first six figures. It was like October. I was at like 93,000. I knew by the end of December, I would hit six figures.
Sure. So I joined a networking group for six and seven figure earners To talk about the state of the industry. And, then, about a week after that I was rear ended at a stop sign. Oh no. My big truck. I was in a little car and he hit me twice and the second hit screwed up my back. Oh no, I'm so sorry. Ugh.
So I couldn't do the masc…. Well, you know, if I listened better, maybe that wouldn't have had to happen, but I couldn't do the masculine way anymore. Right. I couldn't work. 12 hour days, six days a week. I couldn't push myself. I could get up, do a client call and then go lay on ice. And then get up and go to the chiropractor and go lay on ice.
Right. And, that old way of working just was no longer accessible to me. And what happened in those quiet spaces is I started to hear this voice say there's a different way. There is a better way for women to do business. We need to bring this new way of doing business into the world. At the same time, I was walking into this networking group hearing story after story of these women.
And they would say things like, you know, I built a six figure business and got adrenal fatigue. I built a six plus, a multi six-figure business and, got breast cancer. I, you know, I built a million-dollar business of… there's this one gal she's fabulous. And she said that she told me that she got home.
She and her husband had built a multi seven figure business. She was the face of the business. She got home from a speaking gig and couldn't get out of the car. Because her body was so exhausted, she spent the next four months in bed. Right. And so I'm hearing story after story and women who are saying I'm not, I, I, I can't claim to be a six figure earner because I just put my business on hold.
I'm not working my seven figure business right now because I can't do it anymore. And that's when I started to have downloads. Now I had always thought people would say, I'm having a download and I'd go stupid, pretentious. Like you had a freaking idea! Until the downloads started. And I would be like, oh, that's brilliant.
That did not come from my head. Right? Like that's way beyond my wisdom. So I really started to listen to that and I started to bring this new way of business into my business and started to teach it to my clients. And as I started to really listen. And listen to my highest self tap into my divine record keepers, my divine guides, more and more doors opened.
And my business jumped way past that six figures, really easily. It was much easier than I had anticipated. It would be when I was in the push grind force mode. What would you say is the biggest difference between the, I mean, you've, you've sort of been hinting a little bit about what the masculine is, is how that it, how that shows up and what it, what it does, but what would you say, what are some of the key differences between the feminine and the masculine way?
So I think we need to understand, first of all, when I talk feminine, masculine, we all have feminine and masculine in us. And when I'm talking masculine, I'm talking the lower energy masculine. So lower energy masculine shows up as a bully it in that we push ourselves, we work beyond our limits. We give a little bit more than we should.
We don't take time for ourselves. And it's very much a ramp up and push, push, push to a result, and then ramp up and push to the next result. And, you know, I'll never forget hearing a seven figure earner talk about their first million dollar launch and how proud he was that they had worked 17 hour days for three weeks and his team.
Had also worked that and they had like 10 or 15 people on the team. Wow. And they had all worked 17-hour days, seven days a week for three weeks to make that. And I remember going no way. I am never doing that. Like, first of all, I can't physically,...

Namaste and welcome to another addition of live love, engage. And I am looking forward to this discussion today because I've got a guest here who is, she's an author, she's a mother of three, a wife and an entrepreneur.
And life is, is pretty good for her right now, but it wasn't always the case, but we're gonna get more into that in a moment. But first I want to welcome Shelly Sood to live love, engage. Thank you, Gloria. Thanks for having me. Well, I'm really happy to have you on the show because we're gonna be talking about some stuff that was not so nice, I guess that happened in your life and how you've managed to turn things around.
So let me, let me set the stage for our listeners and viewers on YouTube. So six years ago, Shelly had a picture perfect marriage lived in an upper class neighborhood, married to a high powered banking executive. And as I mentioned, she had three awesome kids. And when suddenly her world changed and her loving husband who turns out, had suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder for decades, suddenly transformed before her eyes; filed for divorce and became hell bent on her destruction.
Just not anything that you want to have to go through in your life. So I thought what we'd do is, is start off with the, you know, what, what did that look like? I mean, what was, what was really happening in, in your life and in your marriage and with your husband, that all of a sudden, you know, things, things so radically changed for you.
It, it was quite a long journey. I mean, when we, when he had filed for divorce, I mean, just the rug was pulled out from underneath me, basically. you know, I kind of had an idea that he was struggling with a little bit of, you know, anxiety, or maybe some things like. Maybe potentially depression, but nothing that was official or diagnosed or anything like that.
So, you know, he, every time he would, you know, lose a job or something would happen, that was life changing in his life or our, our lives. I was his number one supporter, and I would just prop him up and I'd say, it's okay. You know, get back on the horse and do it again because you know, you have to repeat mistakes and failures and you learn from them.
And succeed eventually, it's just that one fine moment where, you know, you cannot succeed without enduring some failure in life because that's how you really learn. Exactly. So that was kind of my position. And I think deep down, maybe I subconsciously kind of knew there was something more going on, but that real revelation.
Didn't come to me until it was too late to the point where it had trickled into our personal relationship, because you know, the bipolar disorder we didn't know was there officially, but it definitely had, you know, come out in other parts of his life with travel. And when he was talking to colleagues or when he was, you know, breaking relationships or lashing out at people or whatever it may be, there was that volatility that I didn't see.
It never trickled into our marriage. And so when this happened and he thought his road to happiness was to leave the marriage because you know, a lot of people, they have the midlife crisis. They have things that they go through in their forties, in their middle of their career, where they make huge changes in life.
And think that that is the road to happiness. Whether it is coming from something internally or they're listening to their therapist or their friends or their family. Those kinds of things happen all the time. So that's kind of where we were at, at that point. Now, for those of who are listening, who maybe don't really know exactly, they've maybe heard about bipolar disorder, but they don't really know what it is.
Can you explain a little bit about, I guess maybe how it manifests, you know, how, how, how. How do people act? I guess one might be a good way to say that. So a lot of times bipolar disorder manifests in your late teens or early twenties, typically early twenties. And, you know, it can manifest in a number of different ways.
There's several different types of bipolar disorder, but if we're gonna talk very basic general terms. It's somebody who is cycling from manic highs, meaning they have feelings of grandiosity. They have feelings of potential narcissism. They're irritable. They're they're not sleeping. They have huge bouts of creativity and they think that they're invincible.
Like they could become the next president. Just things that are not realistic to the general world. Right. They could go on spending sprees and, and they're just so elated. And this is not always a long term thing. Now with my husband, it lasted 18 long months. During our separation, that manic episode, which went unrecognized. Then you have the other set of coin, which is depression and depression can manifest with, you know, just listlessness, sleeping all the time, not wanting to get out of bed, high rates of suicide between 20 and 40% of bipolar patients attempt suicide at least once in their lives.
So there's a high percentage of that. And so it, it's such a drastic shift from mania to depression, that it's very hard to figure out. You know, if somebody's cycling for years, who is this person like, who is the real, you know, person that you see underneath all this? Now you, you wrote a book about this journey and, and, and it's called untethered.
How… well, tell us a little bit about that. How did that, what, what is that book about? And cuz I, I really want, you know, I've read your bio, but I want you to tell a little bit more about your story. So what, what is the focus of that? Cuz I, there is a good outcome to this story, right? The focus really is on my life journey and how I was able to untether my own life.
And how my husband had his own journey as well with mental illness. And what kind of impact that has when you don't diagnose a disorder like this for nearly two decades. And what happens to the family? What kind of devastation can happen? And we're talking not even just one generation, but multiple generations to come.
So, you know, we were able to each one of us in our own ways, professionally, personally, untether. Our, our beings untether our souls to the point where we were able to come for a full circle in our lives for a better, more stronger marriage, a stronger family life, children who are thriving now at this point, you know, and we were able to really face our demons as well as we were able to untether our lives professionally.
How, how did you do that? I mean, did you intervene, you know, specifically with him, because especially, you know, if he's, he's wanting to, you know, be separated from you and, and everything. So what did you do? That was the biggest fight of my entire life. Mm. I, you know, when you're manic, most people, they don't wanna get treatment.
And so that's the challenge with bipolar disorder. They don't wanna be on medication. They don't like the way it makes them feel. They don't think they need help. I mean, why would anybody want help when you're so creative and you don't have to sleep and you know what I mean? Right. Yeah. so that was kinda where, what was very difficult is because he would not.
Believe me at that point. And prior to that point, I was not seen as the enemy and he was willing to potentially talk to a therapist or do marriage counseling or whatever it may be. you know, I, I was, he adored me for 15 years. And,...
