it’s April and we’re launching CATASTANIC! A month-long exploration of the craziest TITANIC-inspired disasters in pop culture. And we’re starting with the 1999 Italian/North Korean (!) produced animated film THE LEGEND OF THE TITANIC. An animated movie that dares to ask the question: “What if, like, no one died on the Titanic, and it had, like, talking animals, magic moon-beam tears, and a shakr jail n sh*t??”

IT’S TIME TO SLAM!! This week Justin and Steve break out the knee pads and mouth guards to take a look at SLAMBALL, a combination of basketball and gymnastics that was the greatest hybrid sport since some nerd combined frisbee and golf.

So what happens when you put trampolines on a basketball court? Many people get hurt and viewers like to tune in to watch it once. From its humble inception drawn on a cocktail napkin, Mason Gordon’s SLAMBALL hopes were as high as its acrobatic players. Unfortunately, the grip of gravity is inescapable, and in less than 3 years it all came crashing down. Did the world need or want a new sport? Probably not. But boy oh boy are we happy about the insane highlight reels that will live on forever on YouTube. SLAM IT

This experimental, coming-of-age sports-drama spy-thriller is made up of long surfing montages, 30-minute monologues, flubbed takes, magic sea lions, a real dead whale, conflicting philosophies… and most importantly: squid parts and electricity.

This 10-year Richard Linklater-esque production is truly a one-of-a-kind moviegoing experience, and the boys are losing their minds over it. Wax up, grab your bitch-box, and join Steve and Justin as they confront SURFER: TEEN CONFRONTS FEAR.

Is STAR TREK: OF GODS AND MEN a fan film if the fans who made it are prolific Star Trek actors??

Steve and Justin are going where (at the time of this release) only six Letterboxd users have gone before… Tim Russ’s (Star Trek Voyager) non-canonical Star Trek universe. Can an all-star Star Trek cast including Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Ethan Phillips, Alan Ruck, and Garret Wang save this low-budget love letter to Star Trek from feeling like the Wrath of Comic-Con? Logic would suggest ‘no’. But it was still good enough to change the rules around what can be considered a Star Trek ‘fan film’.

Steven Seagal has finally made it to the pod and Rollie Williams (Climate Town) is back!

ON DEADLY GROUND is not only our first Seagal movie, it’s also an environmentally-charged action movie, and the only movie DIRECTED by the man himself. So the boys called up their own climate badass, Rollie Williams, to fly in and help extinguish this flaming turd.

Is Seagal’s character a good guy? An anti-hero? An ex-navy SEAL? A selfish capitalist? An environmentalist? A firefighter? A Native American? A terrorist? A bear? He’s kinda all of them! And none of them! It’s all as confusing as Michael Caine's hair.

But Steve and Justin can guarantee there are enough nuts shots in this thing to change the essence of a man.

FOOTBALL meets WRESTLING?? The XFL was created when the WWE’s Vince McMahon looked at the NFL (one of the most successful sports leagues of all time) and said “I can do this better”.

Steve Ward and Justin ‘Red’ Dodd travel back to the attitude era of the early 2000s to intercept all of the info they can find about what was supposed to be the next evolution of American football. But after trying every gimmick in the playbook (comedy sketches, fewer safety regulations, giveaways, ‘tours’ of the cheerleaders’ locker room) McMahon and co. still managed to fumble the ball HARD.

Oh, Canada. Did you know that Toronto had a crack-smoking, foul-mouthed mayor named Rob Ford? And would you believe that this all went down only ten years ago?? This week Justin and Toronto’s own Steve Ward look back at Canada’s most infamous dynasty as the Ford boys, Rob and Doug, get involved in scandal after scandal and try to justify it all on their short-lived YouTube show ‘Ford Nation’. It was the Conservative Jerks vs. the Liberal Yahoos during a time when Canadian politics were tariff-free but drug-fueled.

It’s a mutiny in space! SPACE MUTINY! The most 70s sci-fi movie to come out of the late 80s. A rip-roaring Star Wars ripoff that’s chock-full of reused footage from a much better Star Wars ripoff, Battlestar Galactica.

Steve and Justin beam aboard the Souther Sun and discover one of the craziest production histories this side of the moon. From a director on their deathbed to locations that look ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like a spaceship, Space Mutiny doesn’t often get it right, but when it does, it usually involves a giant explosion. And that’s just fine in the boys’ book.
