A more than worthy sequel

I'll start off in echoing my review of this authors debut novel; I don't normally like crime fiction. I conquered my prejudices the first time and was rewarded with an action packed ride through a literally coloufull and familiar (as a West Australian) landscape. This second book returns to the well in an equally polished fashion and lively fashion.

Our hero this time shifted up north to the red dirt of the Pilbara and having (apparently) recovered from his numerous injuries in the first book he finds himself drawn back into the ongoing fallout from the mine robbery of the first novel, and is forced to set out again on a desperate quest to save his daughter and himself from the collective menace of some familiar antagonists and a fresh series.

I won't spoil the plot, but I will say that like the first, for me this book is at its best with its characters out in the local landscape. The living, breathing colour of the descriptions of the country, coupled with the dialogue (the protagonist's inner monologue in particular) create an immersive experience and provide an unusual depth of characterisation for this style of book.

I would highly recommend it. It also stands on its own even as a sequel. You could chose to head over and read the first book first, or go straight ahead with this one. You're fine either way.

A GOOD AUSTRALIAN YARN

I devoured this book! Being an Australian, and being born in Western Australia, I enjoyed every single page. You could smell the dust and feel the heat - and the BEST thing was, it wasn't overdone. Too many book supposedly set in Oz overdo the Australian-isms. This is a good story, the characters are well portrayed, and it leaves you with just a little wonder about his future ..... I hope he writes another book with the same character. I believe he wrote a book called Heist, before Marble Bar, but I found that out later. If you would like a change from books set in USA or Europe, go for this. You won't be sorry.

Brilliant depiction of the toughest country in Australia and a story that's credible and fun.

A worthy sequel, a slower pace and a damn good read

#2 in this series and a very good follow-up to The Heist. A case of "the same, but different". At the end of the 1st novel, Gareth Ford and his little daughter seem to be on the verge of a settled and better life, but when the 2nd novel kicks-off in the mining town of Newman you guess that things have unravelled somewhat. It only gets worse and before too long father, daughter and old friend Rose are off to Marble Bar - a hot, bleak and increasingly dangerous town.

I love the simplicity of the Amish culture.

I love these kinds of books. I will buy most any book pertaining to the Amish culture. Being outdoors and embracing nature is important to me, and learning the ways of the Amish is extremely interesting to me. Also, the stories that are told are so interesting. Reading takes me to another place, another time, another life. This book kept me anticipating what was going to happen next. I loved it.

Well written but...

Like other reviewers, I was drawn to this story because I was a teacher, not only in the public sector, but also in the private and perhaps therein lies my problem with the book. I have yet to meet a headteacher who has time on their hands to swan around and to gossip and have coffee with their secretary. I found the lack of understanding of the education process and of the children within it, too much of a barrier for me to enjoy this book. This is not to say that it is badly written, as it isn't, but perhaps a different subject would be a better fit for the author.

Eclectic

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This eclectic set of stories range from the supernatural to science fiction to adult contemporary. Each story is slow paced but entertaining.

The narrator is the author of these short stories. I have not heard many authors that were good narrators, so I was iffy anyway. She is not bad as a reader, but the voices are not clear in many cases. The stories had interesting plots and ended somewhat predictably.

Different with short stories

I'm not a huge fan of short stories to read but I enjoyed listening to these. Joy has a lovely reading voice which helps! Pronounced nicely & clearly.

Short stories to make you think about aspects of your life....strangely to me anyway! Big Brother was 1!....

Mirror Mirror & Demonic Angel were my favourites, spooky & creepy. The Mr Rochester tale was fab, updated & I really enjoyed the take on it, more please? Lol

Gripping and imaginative, this eclectic collection of fantastic stories has something for everyone! The quality of the audio and delivery of the stories was also extremely impressive and engaging.

What you didn't know about TV news

I had lots of fun reading this book. It combines a satirical look at the TV news industry with the picaresque adventures of a couple banished from a Minneapolis TV news studio. When they hit the road in search of new journalistic exploits, they wind up on the drab plains of Wyoming, encountering a series of colorful characters along the way. Jim Newmanâs precise descriptions, ear for dialogue, and ironic humor make this a fast read. His well constructed scenes are very visual, which makes me hope he adapts this into a screen play â Iâd love to see the movie. Mr. Newman exposes the ample flaws of his characters but is generous to them nonetheless, and even the greedy, delusional owner of WEE-TV has his humanity. I laughed out loud plenty of times, and look forward to more from this author.

Newsroom Odyssey

A Habit of Mind is a fast paced caricature of a newsroom crew that reads like a television show. The author takes you right into the scene with action and dialogue...very little set up of background. I was impressed with how the characters became real with mostly dialogue to idendtify their personalities. They are a snarky bunch...lots of competiveness and back biting and it makes for a comedic scene. I liked the odyssey of the main characters and the author has sketched out some funny and original situations for the newsroom crew to venture into. In the end Doug Pepper and his questionable love interest, Tanya, will go on to figure out where they are in life. Perhaps Mr. Newman will write another follow up and perhaps this could be a television show.

Fun, snarky expose on the personalities and foibles of a Midwest news team. I liked how raw and naked the characters were and how they found out a little about themselves and each other on their journey. Great work by a debut author who I hope writes another soon.

The author is taken with her own writing and ability to describe things in the most excruciating detail. It's a depressing book that seems to have little point. I would not recommend wasting your time
