In order to gain her hand in marriage, Edward seeks to become someone of merit and value by accompanying the scientist George Challenger on a journey to find proof that prehistoric animals still exist.
Along with a band of accompanying assistants, George and Edward find themselves on a unique plateau that derived from an ancient volcano. Almost immediately, the explorers discover dinosaurs living off the land, and, after several breath taking adventures, they then encounter ape-men and early cavemen fighting one another for survival.
George and Edward help the cavemen defeat the ape-men. In return the cavemen show the adventurers a way off the "lost world": a hidden cave. However, when Edward returns as a war hero, he finds that Gladys had made other plans.

    Members Reviews:
    A real "feel good" story.
This is a well-crafted and that is easy to see as a Hallmark Christmas movie. It does not tread (nor does it need to) on any uncharted ground, but is simply a good story that leaves you feeling warm when you finish.
The narration was okay, but at times had a bit of a mechanical sound in the delivery, but nothing that detracted from the story being told.

When cautious Emma Roberts goes to France to carry out research into 17th-century garden design, she finds a reliable diversion from her studies in her unlikely new friend Francoise Desnoyers, in whose beautiful house she is welcomed as a guest. She is not too dazzled to ignore the tensions that exist between Francoise and her formidable mother, or between Mme. Desnoyers and her other guests.
London recedes into the background as life in France becomes more significant in every respect. It is not until the horrifying episode that puts an end to this fascination that Emma is reconciled to her duller but safer life at home and to the compromises that she comes to accept.
Anita Brookner was born in south London in 1928, the daughter of a Polish immigrant family. She trained as an art historian, and worked at the Courtauld Institute of Art until her retirement in 1988. She published her first novel, A Start in Life, in 1981 and her 24th, Strangers, in 2009. As well as fiction, Anita Brookner has published a number of volumes of art criticism.
    Critic Reviews:
"Enthralling...so beautifully observed...as captivating as any thriller. (Marie Claire)
Spare and devastating, powerful. Brookner is an unflinching novelist who writes beautifully and fearlessly. (Independent) Elegiac...its magnificent final sentence is among the most moving of Brooknerian conclusions. (New Statesman)
    Clever and elegant. (Sunday Times)
Brookner is brilliant...readers will not be disappointed. Her women are very real, more recognizable and more human than any obviously loveable character could hope to be. (Sunday Herald)
So well done - so carefully is the novel wrought - that reading it offers deep and enduring pleasure. (Scotsman)

    PRAIRIE HUMOR
Garrison Keillor is a prairie humorist from Minnesota. He speaks about the mythical town of Lake Woebegone and the inhabitants where " ... all the children are above average. " For many years he has hosted THE PRAIRIE HOME companion on public radio. He will be retiring this year.
My wife and I find his radio program and his style of humor outrageously funny. I suggest that you tune in to his radio program and listen to it. If you enjoy the show: BUY HIS BOOKS!
    Leaving Home, Coming Home
Life in a small town. I feel as though Garrison Keillor must have lived here in my small town. His wit and humor and kindness permeate each and every character. There is pathos, irony, heartbreak. I could write the same stories, but I would have to leave town! How do you do that Garrison? It's a gentle read, one that I hated to come to an end. In this crazy, pressure cooker bombed world, it was a comfort. Thank you!
    Another great collection
I've noticed that Garrison loves Christmas, Halloween, sex, and death. They're all covered in this book. Very entertaining
    KINDLE VERSION PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an excellent follow-up to Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon Days. If possible, it is even more sweet-natured and addictive than its predecessor. Lake Wobegon Days finally became available for Kindle only a short time ago and I devoured it. Having not read it for several years, it was like welcoming an old friend back home. The story is not complete, however, until Leaving Home also becomes available for Kindle. Sooooooo....PLEASE Amazon, Mr.

Returning to Penfleet after years in New York, Kate can't help but feel a pang of affection for the little town by the sea where she grew up. If only she were returning in happier circumstances. This last trip is full of farewells: to her childhood home, her once best friend and the life she left behind.
Kissing the widow of the richest man in town wasn't one of Nathan's best ideas. Now he can't get Vanessa out his mind. Skippering his grandfather's boat on picnic cruises up and down the river, Nathan wonders if it's time to move on. Small towns can be dangerous places if you're in the middle of a scandal.
Her husband's death has left Vanessa unsure what her role should be. After years of playing the part of a trophy wife, she can finally think about what she wants for a change.
Sam moved to Penfleet to raise his boys following the death of his wife. His deli has become the place where locals pour out their troubles and swap gossip, but amidst all the banter and laughter, has anyone stopped to notice what's troubling Sam recently?
In the narrow, cobbled streets that lead down to the harbour, the inhabitants of Penfleet live out their hopes and dreams in this gorgeously engaging novel by Veronica Henry, author of The Beach Hut.

    not one of my favs
I have read a few of Veronica's books and really enjoyed them...this one however made me feel totally miserable! just when you think it might be on the up another negative thing happens. Gave up before the end
    Utterly terrible
In my opinion nothing about this boring, predictable, patronisingly narrated story was appealing at all.
    Not a bad story
Story wasn't too bad, however the language was a bit pretentious in bits and the readers voice highlighted this.
    Very enjoyable
What did you like most about High Tide?
Well written, relaxing and reassuring, even though the plot is at times predictable and maybe too simple. I would recommend it to anyone wanting something warm and looking for an injection of positive thinking.
What about Anna Bentincks performance did you like?
She is indeed a very good reader, but I didn't particularly like the use of different voices for different characters, especially the male ones. Nathan and his Grandad above all.
    Discrepancies irritating
Penfleet cannot be in the North Sea and in Cornwall. As one brought up in Northumberland by the North Sea and now living in Plymouth on the South West coast bordering Cornwall this simple error irritates

Lucio Battistini knows the three most important days of his life: the day he was conceived, the day his wife agreed to marry him, and the day he died.

    Solid good
I've seen another 3 star review that said it better than I could do. Now I'm being told I have to have at least 15 words, hence, this sentence.
    Good start, but drags on...
Liked the narration. The story started well, but the 100 days really dragged.....I kept thinking that I wouldn't spent the last 100 days of my life this way.
    Wow
Started off a bit slow but somehow kept you listening...Was well worth hanging in for...powerful, emotional, amazing

    Publisher's Summary:
Leila Massey, a young L.A. screenwriter, is on the verge of hitting it big when she falls into the grip of drug and alcohol addiction. Her descent into the narcotic underbelly of the city leads her to a commune in the desert, a filthy room at the Chateau Marmont, and, eventually, rehab. Will Leila continue down the dark path of addiction? Or will she make it as a successful writer? Based on the author's own life, Liana Maeby's brilliant debut novel is raw and haunting, and simultaneously incredibly astute and humorous. South on Highland explores true identity and questions our culture's response to addiction and sensationalism.
    Members Reviews:
An intriguing and darkly humorous look at an addicts life.
I really enjoyed Liana Maeby's writing, she is a natural story teller, and the writing flows seamlessly. This is a sad, interesting, yet darkly humorous semi-autobiographical look at a drug addict's lifestyle in Southern California, and I was entertained by the whole thing. The only aspect of this book that kept it being 5 stars for me was that Leila often comes across as quite pretentious in her telling of certain events in this story. The "I was completely wasted and strung out on drugs, but still aced every test because I was gifted" mantra, kind of came across as showing off. In some ways it reminded me of how Bukowski used to describe some of his tales of being a degenerate but still excelling at his craft, yet Bukowski was so gifted he could pull off the pretentious outlook on his life. Despite this one complaint. I still would highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from her.
Got addicted to finishing this novel!
I had no idea what to expect, I follow the author on Twitter and she's funny.
This is a dark, deep, and at times funny read that I could not put down. It's been a while since I've read a novel, and I knocked this out on two flights over 3 days.
The writing style makes it an easy and addictive read.
This novel stands apart in good ways. Character is very likable
An invigorating first novel. So many(too many??) memoirs about addiction and Hollywood and youth...This novel stands apart in good ways. Character is very likable. She doesn't want our sympathy. She is a smart, feisty, narrator who speaks her truth and her "disease". I found this read disturbingly fine!
    powerful
This author can write! She absolutely put me in the place and time, and really conveyed how rational an addict's reasoning seems to them. The rehab segment where she finds herself " just the tiniest bit interested" I found particularly powerful. This book left me with two questions; how much is autobiographical, and when's her next book out?
    Wonderfully crafted novel
Wonderfully crafted novel. I'm not much of a fiction reader but read this as a break from all the required historical reading I have to do. Such a welcome break. One of those "couldn't put the book down" moments. Finished it in one day, and even now still mentally linger over her prose.

    Members Reviews:
    Sad But A Little Cynical
This book is sad. It reminds of 2 other very popular books, with it's own twists. The characters were a little cynical for my taste and maybe even a little negative at times but I guess that's what made them realistic. I completely understand why Summer came off negative considering her life but I didn't love how they both seemed to think everyone was awful and purposely throwing their happiness in their faces just because they had things that they wanted to have in their lives. Summer disliked others because they had what she wanted which didn't make me see her in an inspiring light at all. I think the story was supposed to leave me feeling like, this girl who lived a hard life was strong and inspiring because of her illness but It left me feeling like she thought because she wasn't happy others shouldn't be either. But I will say she redeemed herself in my eyes with her message toward the end, that was the first time I think she thought of anyone else. I know this book was adored by many and I did enjoy it, but I didn't fall for the characters the way every one else did, nope, not even a single tear, but it did leave me with a heavy heart. I liked the narration a lot and am glad they had dual narration, I think it brought a lot to the story.
    Story 3.5 Stars
    Narration 4.5 Stars
BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!
I don't usually review books...who has the time. But this book gutted me and lifted me all at once. It deserves pretty words of thanks for such a remarkable journey! Thank you for the honor of reading this book!
    Tears flowing
A Heart-wrenching tale of an amazing love we can all only dream of, hope for, and pray to really be true
An ABSOLUTE MUST listen to Audible
What did you love best about The Summer Remains?
Is it possible we can have another 5 star review for The Summer Remains?
    YES we can!
From the moment Seth announced that is was available on Audible, I jumped on it! I am a HUGE audible fan. When I am driving to work, walking my dog, cleaning my bathroom or like today, taking my 17-year-old son for a week-long college visit. Yup - I am a glutton for punishment. I listened to the last 4 hours of this book to and from dropping my oldest child off at a college. Having a child old enough to stay at a college for a week in itself would have me as a blubbering mess, but I thought I would add to my misery so I listened to The Summer Remains.
Amy Landon has done our Summer so proud. She shifted seamlessly from Summer, to the sweet southern Shelly, to Autumn to Cooper. She WAS Summer. Her narration was one of the best I have ever listened to. I LOVED the book and was so hoping the narrators would do it justice, and well, Amy has!
    Then I heard Zach.

    Members Reviews:
So if I'm a 'ho, what does that make you?
Any book which has the ultimate message to readers that '' We're all whores. '' is more than OK in my world. If you've ever asked yourself '' How can one go from being a Tony award winning actress to a drug addled lesbian stripper? '' ( I know I have many times ) THE LONELY LADY will deliver the answer. Jeri's journey, from her Sexual Awakening, through her downward spiral and nervous breakdown, to her eventual triumph as a Feminist Icon, would make Gloria Steinem proud ( and leave you with your mouth agog ). While not as good as Robbins' A STONE FOR DANNY FISHER ( which I really do think is the greatest 20th century American novel ), this is still one of his more interesting 'trash' novels. If you'd like to see how filthy Harold Robbins could really get, read GOODBYE JANETTE. The semen practically drips off the pages of that book.
I like Harold Robbins books generally
I like Harold Robbins books generally. They usually have a reasonable story line and flow quite well. It is not difficult to get into the story lines and keep up with them. However this book was very bland and I kept waiting for something dynamic to happen and it never did. I actually found myself looking forward to the end of the book which was very disappointing.
    Five Stars
Harold Robbins being Robbins... not for the faint of heart!
    odd
Not the oddest book I ever read, but probably the stupidest. This book reminded me of Sidney Sheldon only the story didn't come together at any point. The main character is unlikable and there is no clear reason for why she is how she is. She goes back and forth between wise, slightly successful strong woman to most of the time loser waste of space and time. I finished it hoping at some point she would wake up and redeem herself but she really never does.
    memories
I read this book for the first time when I was 16...at the time I loved it..looking back though, I think it's probably because it was so risqué for the time...(70's) I was a good read the second time, but I definitely so a lot of flaws.. I liked it though...just didn't love it as much as I had as a girl.
