Real characters to love or detest. Well-paced action from beginning to end
I thoroughly enjoyed two things about âNanâs Journey.â First, the story. It grabbed me from the first paragraph and never let go. I read it in one sitting to see what happens to the main characters, 15-year old Nan and her 6-year old brother, Elmer. Second, the authorâs ability to bring the reader into the action, texture, and heart of the scene.
This is the first book in a series, but delivers the satisfying (and happy) ending I look for. As a reader, few things irk me more than novels in a series that may as well end with, âContinued next week.â
An intriguing storyline builds from beginning to end. Readers are drawn into another time, where horses, buckboards, and hard-scrabble living were the norm. But human nature doesnât change, and the author delivers multi-dimensional characters to love, admire, or detest, with relatively few words. Innocence, evil, perseverance, commitment, and transformation are as alive in this story as they are in real life.
Unexpected changes credited to the working of Godâs grace deliver wonderful messages and enhance the entertainment value of the story. This is a great weekend read, suitable for teens and adults. The book includes references to violent behavior, but has no specific scenes or graphic description.
The best compliment I can give an author is that I want more of the story. âNanâs Journeyâ earned that compliment.
Engrossing story
Nan's Journey pulls you right into the plight of an orphan boy and girl who must flee for their lives from an abusive situation. The West is described from the slightly different perspective of the preachers of the time and the Christian message is interwoven fairly seamlessly. The author has a way of telling a story that is engaging and even with some flaws, it is difficult to put down. I read it in one sitting. The story focuses on forgiveness and the journey of several of the characters to God. The ending is satisfying, but has a cliff hanger that leads to the next book.
I found the medical procedures of the time interesting, and it seemed obvious that the author had done some research into some of the more unusual methods of administering anesthesia.
My rating comes from the rushed feeling of the book in the middle, the head hopping, and the glossing over of some very significant scenes. Sermons are written out instead of being summarized, though they do play a role in the life of a character. The author seems to tell the story more than focusing on engaging the reader into the emotions of the characters. There are formatting issues as well as typos, however, they are not significant enough to distract from the story.
Great story on overcoming adversity and seeking hope above all else.
This is a story of a young girl, Nan, who is determined to not let her painful past determine her future. She finds herself fleeing an abusive home with her young brother and finding a home with a mountain man, that has tragedy in his life he is trying to overcome also. Nan is a young girl, who will quickly grow up and become a young woman with much to deal with. Even when she thinks her and her brother are finally safe, evil will come upon her again. It was a story that moved quickly and was hard to put down.
