Members Reviews:
Au Revoir, Mr. Holmes and Dr, Watson; we'll miss you.
This is the last Canon Sherlock Holmes story, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle just before the First World War. Yes, Sherlock is aged here, but he has aged gracefully and retains every bit of his incredible capacities at detection and acting.
In a sense, this is a sad book, since it truly is our last glimpse of Holmes and Watson as they fade into the mists of history and legend. Yet it is also a proud story of the great Detective's last case and his masterful exit from the stage of playing the Detective.
I have no doubt that he (undocumented of course) improved the strains of bees in England as a final solution to a problem...but Watson didn't tell us about that. All he told us about was his friend's last case for Crown and Country.
he helps to thwart the worst and most malign intentions of the insane Adolph Hitler
Yet another Conan Doyle worthy, amongst all of the chilling, surprising, and often humourous affairs and Adventures in and by which Sherlock Holmes has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of enthusiasts! His Last Bow is the fitting bow that The Final Problem certainly was not! Holmes in advancing years still retains the quickness of mind, the physical strength and litheness, and the wit that made him a dear friend and hero to so many who could never have possibly met him even if they had somehow been transported back to the Baker Street of the latter 19th century and the early 20th. In this last affair, he helps to thwart the worst and most malign intentions of the insane Adolph Hitler.
Not a great ending
being a fan of Sherlock you want to read each and everything written for Sherlock.
This book is the last written by Doyle in Sherlock series.
It starts some German spy trying to gather the signals and ends upo with Sherlock catching the guy by enacting as an informer.
This is not at all Sherlock like and i was disappointed by the book..
I rate this book 2/5
Devil D
Not the collection, but fun.
As other reviewers have stated this is not the collection of short stories with the same name, but the single short story. Even so this one is a must for all fans of Doyle. It is a true outlier among the Holmes stories. It is told in the third person, not narrated by Watson, and it is spy thriller. This story was written, I am sure, as a patriotic ode by Doyle as a way of enlisting Holmes into the cause of the Great War. This is a format recognizable to many people as the movies with Rathbone and Bruce often took place during the next world war which was completely anachronistic to the original stories. Enjoy.
A true masterpiece
The format of not following along with Holmes and Watson as the story began , but rather to discover that he was actually playing another part until the climax was truly refreshing.
