Perry Mason is dining peacefully at the Golden Goose cafe when he receives a mysterious phone call. The frantic woman on the other end of the line is desperate to retain Mason's services, but suddenly vanishes during their cryptic phone conversation.
The only clues: a newspaper clipping about a blackmail case, and the combination to a safe scrawled on a scrap of paper. The case: a tangled web indeed, strung between an eccentric widower with something to hide, a sexy cigarette girl selling with plenty to cry about, a real-estate broker with his own home on the selling block, a wife, a lover, and too many loose ends. The common denominator: murder, of course....

One eye, but no glass eyes
Just an extended discussion of eyeglass lens grinding. Perry has a client who insist she did not hire him but he agrees to represent her nonetheless. Paul Drake recommends a night club where a messenger tracks down Perry Mason and gives Perry a mysterious package. This starts a Perry hiring a bunch of Drake operatives who discover multiple murders who he then sends on a chase across state to track down a fleeing witness. But all of this backfires and Ham Burger thinks he has Perry on the ropes during the pretrial hearing until Mason tells a witness to.... You will just have to read it to find out

Enjoyabel read. First novel with Lt. Tragg as head of homicide ( I think)
An interesting trip back in time. Law enforcement and Jurisprudence was different back in the '40s, but I enjoyed reading this Perry Mason mystery for the clever thinking and steps Perry takes, sometimes ahead of the Police, and sometimes in concert with them. I think this is the first story with Lt. Tragg and he starts our knowing Perry pushed right up to the limits, but is generally on the fight side of the law and searching for the truth.
The novel has no Criminal trial, which is unusual for a criminal trial, but Perry shines in a civil case before the court.
The Silent Partner is not who you might think it is
LT Tragg is introduced in this case and proves to be a competent adversary to Perry, much better than Ham Burger ever was. If you have watched the series, Tragg is not quite depicted the same way. Lot of routine Perry Mason style jiggery-pokery with Perry secreting an invalid, getting a doctor to befuddle police and having Della running around pretending to be someone she's not, much to Perry's anxious worry. That was a particularly engaging scene. Beautiful bar hostesses and business owners and poisoned chocolates that do in a notorious candy pilferer, this is one of the really good Mason mysteries.
I love Perry Mason and pulp fiction
I love Perry Mason and pulp fiction, so I'm cool with this. Just remember that it IS pulp fiction.
    Lt. Tragg makes first appearance.
The first with Lt. Tragg gives understanding about their relationship.
    Anothergood one
I had this is figured out very early. I remember watching this one on TV. It was really nice to see the romantic relationship co finish to developer between Perry and Dela Street

    Publisher's Summary:
A home invasion results in property damage. Children disappear and a disgruntled ex-employee is suspected. Girl visits relative, walks in on scene of carnage. A man searches for days, seeking his lost love. A young woman accuses her father's wife of attempted murder. Dramatic news from CNN? Stories ripped from today's headlines? No, they are cases investigated by Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his intrepid companion and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson.
Drawn into the dark underbelly of folk tale reality, Holmes and Watson travel the streets of London and into the far English countryside to discover the truth about some of the most famous accounts found in childhood literature. Described in Dr. Watson's inimitable style and with the names changed to protect the innocent, these tales recount how Sherlock Holmes investigated cases involving missing children, a trio of brothers threatened with destruction, and the contents of an ancient box that told a tale of heroism and death.
Enter the world of the world's first consulting detective. Stand again in Baker Street and look up at the windows of 221B. That shadow on the blind, is it Lestrade, coming to tell of a baffling case he has failed to solve? Or is it Mrs. Hudson, bring tea and sandwiches to a suffering client? Could it be the Great Detective himself, pacing up and down the length of the room, wrapping his mighty brain around yet another conundrum presented for his consideration? Join Dr. Watson in these adventures and you'll never think the same about folk tales and nursery rhymes again.

    great find
arrived today! ive only skimmed this book (i ordered both volumes and this is the 2nd) but it looks promising. i love holmes and i love folklore so these will undoubtedly be enjoyed!
    An intriguing collection . . . .
âSherlock Holmes and the Folk Tale Mysteriesâ Vol. I by Gayle Lange Puhl is an intriguing collection of thirteen Holmes adventures, wherein Our Heroes become involved in a number of cases that have certain aspects resembling well known stories from childhood.
In the introduction, the author asks âWhat place can Sherlock Holmes have in the world of folk tales?â It turns out that Holmes can contribute quite a bit. Each of these stories is well-written in the traditional Canonical manner, and just as important, they are set within the correct time frame, and not in some modern world with cell phones and big hair.
I believe my favorite tale was âThe Case of the Weary Wandererâ, in which reminds one a bit of the story of Cinderella, but with a twist. The best of these stories are the ones that have aspects of the original folk tales, but have enough original twists that they become their own independent stories. There are three stories that are a little too âon the noseâ â referring specifically to âGoldilocks,â or to the very similar-to-fairy-tale-names of âRumpel Stiltskinâ or Humphrey Dumfreyâ. Seeing as how this is designated âVolume Oneâ, I assume that more stories are to follow. Iâm very much looking forward to them, but might I suggest to the author that future references to such obvious character names be toned down a bit in the next entries?
All in all, this was a very fun book, and a very unique way to present some new Holmes stories.

    Publisher's Summary:
It is summer 1890, and the game is afoot.
When an elephant escapes from the London Zoological Gardens, Holmes and Watson become embroiled in one of their strangest cases yet. Engaged by a jeweler in fear for his life, the trail leads Sherlock to two secret societies, each pursuing the eight ruby elephants said to unlock a vault containing the lost Nizam diamond. Standing in his way are some deadly foes: the Archangels, assassins in top hats and tailcoats, hell-bent on the murder of the great detective and the acquisition of the treasures of the realm. The adventure leads the intrepid pair to Lord's Cricket Ground, the Royal Albert Hall, a bizarre series of thefts at the National Gallery, deepest rural Suffolk, and ultimately the very heart of the empire. With high-speed chases on Penny Farthings and a cast of eccentric characters, it takes all of Holmes' ingenuity - and a little help from Mycroft - to unravel this elephantine mystery.

The Curious Case of the Awkward Narrator
It was hard to appreciate the story because of the awkward narration. I've heard worse but a bad narrator can do untold damage to a good book.
    Dominic Lopez RULES!!!
If you could sum up Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Ruby Elephants in three words, what would they be?
    Authentic Holmes fun!!!
What other book might you compare Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Ruby Elephants to and why?
Besides the original Conan Doyle stories, I would compare "the Ruby Elephants" to Nicholas Meyers' run of Holmes adventures, in that this absolutely captures the flavor of the original Conan Doyle stories, while bringing new, fresh ideas that weren't available to Conan Doyle at the time.
Which character as performed by Dominic Lopez was your favorite?
It's hard to pick a single character Dominic Lopez portrayed as a favorite. They are all excellent and enjoyable to listen to! But since the story is narrated by Dr. Watson, I would guess this required the most from Mr. Lopez, and thereby this would be my favorite performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Chris James masterfully plotted many amazing twists, and Dominic Lopez skillfully conveyed them! It would be difficult to pick a single moment, and it would be spoilerific, as well. Allow me, then, to say that this audiobook is packed with delightful surprises, right to the very end!
    Any additional comments?
I look forward to more James' Holmes adventures, ESPECIALLY if they are narrated by Dominic Lopez!!!
Sherlock Holmes and the Ruby Elephants
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
A good story with many twists to the plot.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not necessarily, but you return to many well-know characters from other Holmes adventures.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Not a captivating narrator - odd intonation and various mis-speaks. A rather poor recording.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Yes
    good for the ouevre
this book fits seamlessly into the holmes pantheon. It doesn't eally beak new ground, but the focus on Gothic aspects is a welcome variation.
    Great narration
The story is a bit over the top but the reader is outstanding. The story was interesting at times.

    Publisher's Summary:
Holmes and Watson are plunged into the secret underworld of 1925 London, where a serial killer of musical (gay) men is afoot. The killer has a little list, and Sherlock is on it. Why? And what have the Bloomsbury Group and the Diogenes Club got to do with anything?
Thanks to Royal Jelly, Holmes is a fit 71-year-old who has lost his interest in bees and returned to detecting. He's not quite as sharp as he used to be, but he's still pretty sharp, and a bit of a vigilante in his old age. He meets up with his colleague and friend, Dr. John Hamish Watson, a 72-year-old not-quite-so-fit-at-all twice-widower, who hankers after the good old days of derring-do. They are joined by their excitable new housekeeper at 221B Baker Street, the brilliant, buxom Miss Lily Hudson, and are helped in their work by Jasper Lestrade of Scotland Yard, the ambitious, respectful son of the late George Lestrade.

Decent Attempt Ruined By Incredulous Antagonist
*** THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS ***
When Mycroft Holmes dies suddenly, a now twice-widowed Dr Watson comes to be accidentally reunited with his old friend at the funeral, where Holmes confides in him that his brother's death was in fact a murder he intends to investigate. As Sherlock Holmes has sold his cottage in the Sussex Downs and moved back into Baker Street, he of course asks Watson to do the same. The first few opening chapters were a nicely done getting together of the detective and doctor in their golden years - the meat and potatoes, as it were, of a solid story, were in place. There was an attempt made at recreating those intellectual puzzles of the originals, the idea behind the ciphers was exceptionally clever, and the first few chapters came off as very polished for a first novel. It appeared then, as though we were in for a nice "retirement era" story that attempts to recreate, with a few obvious exceptions, the spirit of the duo's old days solving crimes in Victorian England.
Except, that is the last thing it actually does.
The case revolves around a series of murders where all the victims are "musical" and being killed in a very gruesome way. It made for a promising start, but the plot collapses quickly. The historical accuracy was nil - too much of the antagonist's motivation seemed rooted in 21st century sensibilities. It is one thing to take a topic that Watson would have had, for proprieties sake, to leave unpublished, yet another to insert modern situations and reactions to them into a Victorian setting. This contributed to straining an already thin plot. Aside from that, the killer's identity and reasoning behind his murder spree were veneer. There was, essentially, no mystery to solve.
The characterizations were not exactly up to par, either. Lily Hudson - who is no substitute for her aunt, the estimable Mrs Hudson - was grating from the very page on which she was introduced, with her overdone cockney accent. Mycroft Holmes was apparently a Bohemian socialite. Holmes, I have to admit, was mostly himself, which is why I stuck with it all the way through. Watson starts off fairly well, however, does not get away so unscathed. Somewhere mid-way through, he becomes an absolute farcical bumbler, who contributed nothing whatsoever to the story and apparently had no other purpose than sleeping and eating.

    Résumé de l'éditeur:
Avril 1945.

Would you try another book from Éric Giacometti and Jacques Ravenne and/or Julien Chatelet?
    Je ne sais pas.
What could Éric Giacometti and Jacques Ravenne have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Ils auraient pu écourter ou bien éliminer des chapitres qui n'ont pas d'influence décisiive sur l'histoire. Les heures passent et l'intrigue n'avance pas.
Did Julien Chatelet do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Non.
Did Le rituel de l'ombre (Antoine Marcas 1) inspire you to do anything?
    Pas vraiment.
    Any additional comments?
Les auteurs pourraient faire la part des choses entre l'histoire romanesque et le long traité d'histoire de la maconnerie propre pour des historiens spéciaisés.
