Hard Boiled meets Urban Fantasy

What made the experience of listening to Raw Deal the most enjoyable?

Julia Motyka is a great narrator. Great story, great narrator, perfect match.

What other book might you compare Raw Deal to and why?

Maybe Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series. It's not a good comparison but they share something. Not sure what but it's the first thing I thought of.

This is a great start to a new series; and, a refreshingly new take on the genre. It's full of magic, action and adventure. Once you start, you won't be able to put it down! The narrator did an excellent job. There are numerous characters and each had a distinct voice.

Like to get lost in stories? This book's a nod to you

I thought Whitton Frank's energetic, youthful, and engaging narration was a good match for author Danny Bell's quirky yet grounded (and delightfully flawed) protagonist. The world building of Empty Threat is a nod to book lovers. Are you an introvert who prefers books over people? Ok maybe you don't have to be that extreme... but do you get lost in a story, or ever imagine living with fictional people? Empty Threat takes an old sci-fi idea and gives it a new twist. The concept of jumping into books to save characters who normally die will make you really consider your own morality. What is right here? Preserving literary works, or using your powers to help others?

A Compelling Read for Everyone

Spoiler Warning: I tend to play fast and loose with book spoilers, but I try to keep things as vague as possible.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the miscellaneous characters in fiction? The buddy who dies just to prove how tough the bad guy is- the barber who gets robbed during a superhero's origin story. The various no-names who get devoured in the latest episodes of "The Walking Dead" while Rick Grimes gets to look sad about people dying under his watch?

Probably not. I certainly didn't, until I read this book, that is.

"Empty Threat" is a story that analyzes fiction through the lens of someone who is able to travel into fiction- Alanna Black. "Empty Threat" does a great job of looking at your typical fantasy novel- and offering a new perspective on things. Things that you would expect to happen, don't (no romance, whaaaaaat? Alanna is defined by her actions and not who she's in love with!?!?) and things that you wouldn't expect to happen, happen in extraordinary ways.

"Empty Threat" is certainly not a perfect book, but the novelty of it is so refereshing that it's good to see this sort of take on fantasy literature. I'm most definitely going to be looking forward to the sequel- and giving copies of this as presents to some of my friends and family.

Strong Females for the Win

Danny does a wonderful job of giving life to a relatable, strong, female main character, which is a breath of fresh air in a genre where men tend to lead.

Awesome story, not a fan of the narrator.

I'm really tired if changing narrators for Dalglish's stories. I love his work but it is so distracting to hear several different pronunciations of names of people, gods, and cities. In a perfect world we would have all of his stories narrated by the same person who did his shadow dance series. I also don't think the narrator changed his character voices enough. The two main characters sounded exactly the same. That being said, I can't wait for the next book because I honestly love every book David Dalglish has written! I recommend ALL of his books!

Weekend worthy!

Old school, fun, adventure fantasy. Gather up your troops, battle the evil, and so on! A good afternoon's entertainment, weekend worthy!

Good character development, fighting action and plot development. Paced a little too slowly for me.

A good, highly detailed, story line. I a little long winded and very repetitive in places. Pacing suffered as a result. The same story would have been highly entertaining if it could have been a couple hundred pages shorter.

Hooked

I've already purchased all the books in the series after I read the first. I like the characters and the story. Always enjoy a quest story with different types of characters. The different challenges they encounter and the book is injected with a little bit of humor to lighten the intensity.

Knights and mystical beings

Really like this series of books! Action packed.

An explosive end to Lumley's epic

The Great Old Ones finally rising from their aeons-long slumber. The stars are right and all of the cosmos is feeling something evil in the wind. Though the Elder Gods defeated them a billion years ago, they have forgotten the secrets for doing so and are helpless with their current rising. Titus Crow is then given the impossible choice to mislead his friend Henri in hopes of using him as bait to lead the monstrous Cthulhu Cycle into a trap. This results in almost everyone finding themselves trapped on a cross-temporal journey through multiple realities as well as times.

Elysia ends the series with a bang rather than a whimper, having a catastrophic ending which nicely brings to close Lumley's saga of science-heroes and occultists versus godlike aliens. Unfortunately, the book is not without flaws as an entire section of it is taken up by recounting a story from his Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stand-ins versus the actual heroes. Still, we have a story which consists of visiting a sentient gas cloud, skimming a black hole, visiting a gigantic robot in the Dreamlands, dueling with a wanton airship pirate queen, and finally visiting an ancient Pre-Hyborian Age realm of wizard kings.

Lumley has an imagination he allows to run wild and it works well here with this being, along with Spawn of the Winds and The Burrowers Beneath, one of my three favorite Titus Crow stories. Lovecraft aficionados aren't going to find some last minute, "The Great Old Ones show up and kill everyone" but they're allowed more dignity here than they had in some of the volumes. Whole worlds are destroyed when the wrath of Cthulhu is unleashed and the final confrontation with him is epic in a Jack Kirby-meets-Doctor Who sort of way.

The book's ending actually moved me just a wee bit and gives the right sense of sacrifice as well as power for the defeat of the Great Old Ones. While Lovecraft purists will rail at the fact the Great Old Ones can be defeated at all, it isn't the case of Hawkgirl smacking Cthulhu around with her mace either. I felt this was a satisfactory wrap-up to all of the series mysteries and left me feeling like I'd spent my time well traveling with such an eccentric cast of oddballs.

Good continuation of the plot but the narrator just sounds odd and sometimes the story just starts to lose interest but still a good listen and continuation of the store from the previous books

this book has is very good at showing Strategy in battle. it is also a very interesting book to those who have read the rangers apprentice series with will and halt.
