I really hope to see a followup soon!

I was a fan of the author's Valducan urban fantasy books, so I thought I would give this a shot. i'm really glad I did. The stories revolve around a thief named Ahren, who ends up joining The Tyenee, the secret thieves guild, after he is betrayed on a job. He is branded the Black Raven because of the betrayal, and is convinced by a Tyenee leader that it is a good nickname. In fact, he leaves black raven feathers at the scenes of his crimes as a calling card. He has a series of adventures, with successes and failures, all the while fighting against an enemy that has the power of a demon to assist them. The characters are compelling, especially Ahren, and he has more than his share of failures to go along with the triumphs, including losing someone very close to him. The villains are well thought out, with the actions scenes being exciting an believable. The villains are not over the top Bond villains, but realistically written. I am really excited to see where he takes the character in future books. Any fan of Alex Bledsoe's Eddie LaCrosse books or Brent Week's Night Angel books should really enjoy this book.

Not what I expected

Would you try another book from Seth Skorkowsky and/or R. C. Bray?

This is a collection of short stories with the same characters in the same world. I would have preferred a single story.

Every story was excellent and captivating. I was always satisfied by the conclusion of one story straight into the middle of the next.

Ahren was by far my favorite; his character development was fantastic and I really fell in love with him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I found myself sitting in my car after work trying to finish a chapter before heading inside.

Great Dragon Read From Cover to Cover.

As far as Dragon story's go this one is worth the read. The story was great, slow in some parts for my taste, (though) I do prefer thrillers myself. I really enjoyed the narrator he did an excellent job switching from character to character. There was some occasionally language (if that bothers you) but was approatedly used. As far as the author goes I enjoyed his style especially his use of the phrase (my love). All in all the book was definately worth the read.

Great book - A little easy though

Hallowell writes a great book here. It's got everything you could possibly want in it: dragons, riders, combat, and even a little magic thrown in for luck.

The story can actually be broken up into several different themes. The first theme is that of a common solider with exceptional leadership skills. And how those skills alienate him from both his common brethren and the nobles who look down on him. A part of both but separated from all. This can be related to many a story or military tale. Another theme is the one of companionship and loyalty. We get this theme through Delno's relationship with the men he led (Which we get to meet though out the land and tale) as well as his relationship with his partnered Dragon. And then we have the political theme where Delno is again forced into a leadership role to stop other Riders from taking over the kingdom.

This is really my only fault with this book. Delno, with a newly hatched dragon and new to the saddle, is pretty much given the rule of the Riders. Even though there are several elder riders with century's of experience over him, all but the main villain seem ready to hand over the reigns to him. It just came off as too easy.

But other than that flaw, the story is fantastic and multi-layered. I'd highly recommend this book and look forward to others.

a solid work of entertainment. I have seen better, but not by much! I buy about 4 books a week so I would know.... yes it is a little predictible, and the characters are a little flat, but it is still quite enjoyable.

Not compelling

Fine narration. I bought this book for the .... Dragons! I wanted to like it, but it's almost painfully boring. Besides bonding with a dragon hatchling, nothing much happens for the longest time. And the bonding scenes were sickly sweet, unlike the bonding of Temeraire with his rider in His Majesty's Dragon.

No tension for most of the book. No "big bad" till 2/3 into the novel, when a plot finally emerges. Any problem or challenge is quickly resolved by the ever-ready hero, who calls everyone "my friend" and "looks into their eyes" as a sign of his sincerity.

Very promising with potential

Overall the story is good considering it is the first of the series. I believe there is a lot of potential for this to become a great series.

The narrator was great. My only complaint is that it was awkward to listen to some of the female voiceovers and difficult to take some of the characters seriously with the voice used for them. Overall, however, the narrator did a great narration

The story and characters are ngaging and unique and the book keeps your attention from beginning to end. Two things about the story that I did not like was that plot twists and learning about certain characters and their secrets seemed a little rushed. An example of this is when a character reveals a secret during combat and the only response from the revelation was a few words acknowledging it. I felt the rushed reaction and revelation took away from the character and who they are.

Secondly, the story and characters display some cliche lines and characteristics. While having cliche themes or lines is nit inherently bad and I do not view cliche as always bad, some cliche lines seem to take away from the characters vibrant and unique personalities and senses of humor that are portrayed very vibrantly and well in other scenes.

In the end, this book was a pleasure to read despite a few little things I personally think took away from making the story more or less perfect. I would highly recommend this book to any fans of fantasy and coming of age stories.

Not Complete

i am not a fan of books that do not have a complete story arc. Apparently the crisis of this book is getting the armor off. That was not a good enough climax to make wading through all the blood and gore worth the trip.

This was not good.

What disappointed you about Stormcaller?

The dialogue was awkward. Listening was painful. I can't blame the narrator, he obviously did his best the material. But I can't call his performance good. The story was cliche, but I can handle that. We all know the hero's journey by now. I won't be a snob. I know what to expect most of the time when I pick up fantasy adventure. But while the author obviously loves the genre, he has little talent for it's execution.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Into the Wild by Larry Correia. I can't wait. He is always a blast.

What aspect of Charlie Kevins performance would you have changed?

When the material is this bad tone it down. He tried to bring life to the bad dialogue which just made it sound even worse. Every time he spoke you couldn't help asking yourself if people would really say that, or react that way in a particular situation. If Kevin had better material he would have really shone.

Happy I found this new (to me) series!

Not long ago I found Lisa Shearin through her SPI Files series books, The Grendel Affair and The Dragon Conspiracy. I enjoyed those books greatly, so nosed around to see if I thought I would like any of her other books as well. It made sense if you like one series, you will in all likelihood enjoy the authors other work as well. Looking at Lisas page on Goodreads, I noted that the first novella of the Raine Benares series, Wild Card (Raine Benares .05) was available, and was the perfect way to begin, especially as the audio is only $5.95. Besides, I like Eileen Stevens, the narrator, so I downloaded it from Audible to give the series a try.

I wasnt disappointed. I like Raine. She is strong, though not overpoweringly so. While she is a magical elf, her magic isnt of the Blow them all up type. Rather, she is a Seeker she finds missing items, missing people, that sort of thing. Now, she has been asked to find the stolen jewels belonging to Lady Kaharit (listening on Audible means you cant always know how things are spelled!) a high standing Goblin lady. Of course, who she is to steal them from is scary in its own right and it leads to even scarier things very quickly.

Magic Lost, Trouble Found (Raine Benares 1) is playing on my tablet now! Oh, and the third in the SPI Series, The Brimstone Deception, is due out January 26, 2016 (Soooo Long!! :-() but I already have it on my must have list.

Great Introduction To The Series

After reading and liking her SPI Files series, I thought Id give Lisa Shearins Raine Benares series a try. I started with the audio of "Wild Card", a prequel story to the series.

"Wild Card" is a quick adventure story about Raine, her criminal cousin Phaelan, and a seductively handsome goblin mage, Tamnais Nathrach, saving the souls of children being used as chips in a high-stakes poker game. This story gives me a little background about Raine and her family as well as the world she inhabits.

The narrator, Eileen Stevens, does a pretty good job with the voices. I havent listened to Stevens before, but her voice is good. I might look into speeding up the narrative just a bit, though.

I both read and listened to this story.

Excellent Sequel to Blood's Pride

This is an excellent sequel to Blood's Pride, and continues the story in a meaningful, well-paced, and thrilling way. I'd love to wax poetic on the plot of the book, but your time is better served by just reading it.

I cannot wait for the concluding volume of this trilogy.

An enjoyable sequel

The second book in the Shattered Kingdom Series is a well-written, fast and enjoyable read. In this installment we travel from Shadar to Norland with the main characters. E. Manieri handles portrays her human and non-human characters skillfully and brings a new dimension to Vampire and Viking myths (which, by the way have been a little too over-used). Highly recommended....

The book was over half way through before the story really started to continue on. And even then it wasn't all that great. The book was just okay

I liked this narrator better then the one used in the first two books of the series. However she did read a bit to fast. But I like her voice.

A decent story ruined by the narrator

I'm sorry but this narrator is the absolute worst I've ever heard! Not only did she mispronounce very simple common words, but she sounded like s computer half the time and valley girl/sex operator the other half! I feel bad saying all this but i have suffered through bad narrators before but this one goes beyond by tolerance threshold. Why did they change the performer from the first few?

Looks like I'll be reading this one the old fashioned way... EPIC FAIL PUBLISHER

I love this series!! Author W.J. May has outdone herself again. She continues to write stories that keep you glued to your seat. I can't wait to start the next book now!

The narrator Elizabeth Meadows kept me immersed throughout this story. I thought she did a great job with her telling of this story. I was able to identify each character in this story. Overall, a perfect 5 star rating!!

Chloe Golden (the narrartor who did part 1 and part 2). I perfer when book series keep the same narrator through out.

The biggest turn off from the audio book was the narrator's habit of pausing in the middle of a sentence as if there were a period there, very Shatner-esque. It made the delivery very choppy and difficult to follow. Also, the lack of vocal difference between characters (no change in her vocal patterns at all) sometimes made the dialouge hard to follow.

"As Strength Goes"

Yes, this series is obviously an early work. Yes, the characters barely rise above one-dimension. Yes, there seems to be a lot of action which takes place off the stage. Ignore these drawbacks.

Cook's strength lies in his ability to carry his readers along for the entire ride. From the beginning to the end, Marika rushes from one event to the next like a gathering tsunami. At its greatest moments this series is a great telling of winning every battle but loosing the war.

great series

This is book two, and the series is developing nicely. My enjoyment of these books is in the character as opposed to the magical development. So often in fantasy, the story revolves around the continually growing powers of the protagonist, as he learns to develop them, blah, blah, blah. This is an actual story, with fleshed put characters, all with flaws and endearing qualities. A new world has been created, and each book gives us more of a buy in to that world. I am ready for book three, so enough chatter about book two.

One of my new favorite fantasies by a very underrated author

After having read A Shadow in Summer, I became fond of Daniel Abraham as an author, but it wasn't until I read A Betrayal in Winter that I became a true fan. This isn't to say that I didn't like the first book, but the second book of his Long Price Quartet is nothing short of amazing and for me it surpasses the first book in every way.

What I really like about Daniel Abraham is that his books are far from traditional in the genre of fantasy. I'm becoming more and more appreciative of authors that stray from the conventional and Abraham does this very well. There's no true hero here, no brave warrior on a quest for us to cheer for. In fact, just like the first book, there is little here to actually call "fantasy." Other than the andat there is no magic to speak of and the only other qualifying feature that makes this a fantasy novel is the completely crafted world. As my reading tastes have evolved I've actually come to enjoy fantasy like this more than the sword and sorcery type which uses wizards and dragons and elves and all of the other mechanics that have been played out since Tolkien popularized them nearly a century ago. As with the first book I this quartet, Betrayal shows us that it doesn't take a lot of magic and sword fighting to propel a good story, though this book definitely has more action than the last. There are no battles, but weapons are used and people are killed. What more do you need?

Those familiar with Shadow (as well you should be if you're reading Betrayal) will be familiar with two of the main characters here, Otah and Maati. 15 years has changed each character considerably and it is interesting to see their lives after they'd been apart from each other for so long. While they are indeed complex characters as are all of Abraham's, my favorite characters of this book are ones newly introduced, namely Cehmai and Idaan.

Final Book in Series Disappointing

I found the final book in the series some what disappointing and anti-climatic. Out of all books it was my least favorite. Some of the characters in this book were introduced later in the series and I didn't care about them the way I did the "main" characters; some of the scenes were drawn out too long and I was starting to speed read through it rather than savor it like the other books. I must say though, the ending did have a twist that surprised me which redeemed the book, somewhat. I will miss some of these characters like lost friends now that I have finished the series. Tolchuck & Fardale were my favorites...loyal, true and lovable.

Great books! Very under-appreciated

Great books! Very under-appreciated. As a heads-up for James Rollins fans, they're the same guy. His non-fantasy writing is a bit more polished, but this story was pretty darned good, and he wasn't trying to retell Lord of the Rings or Wheel of Time. Also true to Rollins/Clemens fashion, there will be bad guys that you hate so much you want to pull off your own arm and beat them to death with it, were it the only potential weapon available.

What a way to finish it!

What a way to finish it! This whole series has been entertaining and capturing, but this end is something amazing. Even the story outside the story ends up becoming a cool look at a world that doesn't exist. I did not see some the story lines ending like they did, but I loved them all the same. Beware, don't be too attached to all the main characters.

Five book series is great

The series is a keep you glued all the way! You read one you'll be hooked for the other four books!

Utterly brilliant.

This is officially one of my new favorite series. I loved it, and I wish Clemens would write more. Maybe a prequel, set in Chyric Alasea? Either way, buy this series! You will not be diappointed.

Brutality and Darkness Skillfully Interwoven

Fans of Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and fantasy RPG games will love this. Orrin Grey uses 4 characters to tell a daring tale of escape, loyalty, and integrity. Each character's thoughts and feelings are vividly conveyed chapter-to-chapter. I enjoyed its psychological deepth and primal energy. Good stuff!

Hot and Cold

As I reflect on this book, the fact that I didn't really like this book is a credit to the author that his development of the characters was so real. I grew to like the main character but was really horrified with his fate at the end of the book.
