It was a bit slow at the start but I quickly became hooked. Kirby is a great narrator and the story was engrossing and relatable for me.

This is a really good series, been following it primarily so I can find out what Kyra really is and this one seemed like we were going to get some answers. But we don't cuz the kids in this series are much like millennials - they think they know best and do whatever they want! But, serious, Morgan, all of the Escalon characters are dead, including the main character! Where are you going with this? Unfortunately I can't download the next one because Audible says that it is not available...but then it says this one is not available but I just got through listening to it!

Just Right

Sometimes you're looking for a good mix of sci-fi and fantasy. It can be hard to find. Gene Wolfe did a tremendous job in this respect, but not many others. Pulsipher really has my ear now. He's woven a story with hi-tech and wormholes with the mystical creatures that we come to expect with classical fantasy. In that respect, I think this book definitely adds to both genres.

Both protagonists are very likable. I feel like there's a lot more going on and am anxious for book 2. Also, and I'm glad for this, there isn't a lot of fluff. The story is cut well and moves forward with every chapter or POV change. It has an epic feel without being 30+ hours long in audio form. The descriptions are awesome. I loved hearing the descriptions of other worlds, though foreign, but you can easily imagine what's there. The narrator was a good choice for this story. Wide range of characters and didn't have to wonder who was speaking at any point. Solid, consistent performance.

Hope book 2 comes out soon.

Um, yes, more please

This book could have been 50% longer. Spoiler: big cliffhanger at the end! I have it on good authority that book 2 (obsidian threads) is close to being done.

Kaden and Aren make a great team, even thought their time together in this first book is limited. Their different paths are in unique and intriguing. I freakin loved the dwaros/dwarf creatures. Their song that and magic is very interesting and pretty fresh! Storytelling was great and enhanced by the narrator. What a voice this one has. Wow. Anyway, cheers! On to the next!

The performance was just fine. Repeating the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over was just a pain in the behind to listen to.

Anger and frustration. How many times do I have to be told that Tanin bonded to earth first. That he could sense fire easily. THat he and Amiah are bonded because she shaped him. Over and over and over and over. UGH!

Unique approach to an Elemental Magic System

I liked this series. I completed the five books currently on Audible in about 4, or 5 days. There has to be more volumes coming out, because of all of the loose ends, and because of how the last book ended. The novels have a steady pace until book 3, when the pace really increases. The thing I like the most about the series was the unique approach to an Elemental Magic System. The thing I disliked the most about the series is that the books are too short, and had to have been the minimum word count to fit the definition of a novel, and not a short story. Btw...the last 30 minutes of each novel is the first 30 minutes of the next book. The narrator did a great job, although he talks fast, and every now and then I had to go back a minute, or more to catch what he said. There is also a love story in the series, but it isn't gushy and there are only a few stolen kisses in it, which is a plus for me. Overall, even with my few complaints, I give the series and the narator 4 Stars overall.

Excellent idea, poorly written .

Loved the world and the characters but I kept getting distracted by the authors lack of an extensive vocabulary. I felt like I was reading a book written by a 12 or 13 year old. If the author learns to not use the same words over and over again to describe something, often in the same sentance, he/she would go far in the realm of sci-fi fantasy writing. Can't bring myself to buy the next book because of this reason.

Very repetitive!

I enjoyed the story but the book is very repetitive, it is as if the author needed to reach a word count.

interesting world, crappy characters

world was interesting, but the characters were annoying and lacking depth. the author doesn't write a believable relationship (whether it is mother/son, friendship, or lovers). The main character constantly narrates about his affection for another character being a major motivator, but you don't actually see it in the interactions between the two.

Writers! Please read this so you know what not to do

I'll keep this short. The author needs to learn to 'show' more and be more descriptive, and the 'he turned' 'she turned' 'it turned' is SO repetitive. The story itself is meh.

LOVE THESE WITCHES

Debora Geary writes about these whimsical characters so amazingly that you feel like part of the "witch central" family. I've read all three of her series and would read more if she gets her witch groove back! Thanks for making me happier, one awesome book at a time!!

narrator annoying but worth it

I'm still cringing when the kids speak but the story is a wonderful end to this section of with central Berkeley. it has helped very much understanding the plots going on in the other parts of this world

Back on track

Much better than the first darkwar book. I still don't know why we have to follow the three boys. Their efforts seem detached and inconsequential in the big scheme of things.

But this book is good anyway.

Excellent Audio Introduction to Pathfinder Tales

This is an excellent audio Introduction to Pathfinder Tales series of novels. The narrator was easy to listen to and there was no difficulty in distinguishing between characters. If there was any problems with the Novel was that at points it felt it went a little too fast, but that may be because I am used to long series of linked novels.

Better than the last book

I love this series. Sadly, Steve West butchers the established character voices. Pausing should have gotten the normal voice actor.

Interesting "read"

I would/will likely listen to this again as the Android App is currently being flakey and there are a couple of spots I missed. That said, I also enjoyed some of the subtle, "gamer" in-references, such as the Wizard Yondo using his last scroll rather than saving it and having a crisis because he "knew he should have saved it." Every RPG I've played, table or video, there's always that moment of "should I use it now or save it because I might need it later?!" There are a number of similar moments the author portrays that gave me a chuckle.

I can't give a favorite moment in the book without spoilers, but there is a moment when Radovan has to make a decision (yes, there are more than one of these scenes, but you'll recognize the main one that I'm referencing when you listen to the book) and that scene fired off a visual in my imagination that was nearly a movie. It was a well written, well narrated scene.

The narrator seems a bit 'mellow,' and the change in voice that I'm used to in other books is more subtle, so that at times I had problems following which character was speaking.

Amazing addition to an incredible series!!!!

When I am at work I like to listen to books because I have very little free time these days. But I will say that this series and this book in particular has made me laugh, cry, and at times cry out.(Which got me very strange looks at work.) Following the Great Sorceress has been amazing, but Amy Landon has made Lady Seca come to life.

the author has away he tells his stories and every story has a similar undone and this story is no different except the undertone is the story. I found the books chaired characters to not be human. the book read like a bad play where you can tell the characters do not act but just repeat memorized lines, not life like at all. easily the authors worst series as he generally is a great writer.

Wizards of War

Is there anything you would change about this book?

About 2/3rds of the book plays out like the game of clue. While this banter back and forth between mages is fun... it can be hard to remember who is who and where they came from. Many people seem to be murdered by others and you really can't keep it straight!

If youve listened to books by Ed Greenwood before, how does this one compare?

Standard Ed Greenwood here. Either you like him or you don't. The story really doesn't have an impact on the realms per say (at least not yet).

Which scene was your favorite?

Sadly, my favorite scene came at the very end of the book (last few pages). By then the story was clear and I knew the players.

Did Spellstorm inspire you to do anything?

I would definitely listen to this book again. It would help understand the beginning with the why and who questions.

Any additional comments?

I feel if you like Greenwood then you'll like Spellstorm. It's a fun story but just be prepared that the first 2/3rds is not really battles and heroics.

I'll buy his modules in a heartbeat. but I've been reading about the same handful of characters for over 20 years now. while I enjoy the read, its getting tired and I ling for new characters.

Sorry Ed :( you and Bob need some fresh ideas!

By far the weakest of the Elminster series.

I'm typically a huge fan of Ed Greenwood and I loved every other book in the Elminster series, but this one was just painful. The story was slow, the action and cast of characters were confusing and hard to follow.

And to top it off, the reader, like many others reading Forgotten Realms books, really missed several of the pronunciations. That drove me nuts and further distracted me from the story.
