Disappointing story and awkward narration

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Some of the accents are simply painful to hear. I thought I might get used to it over the course of the book, as I have iwith many other audio books, but every single time I heard certain accents I would cringe. The accents seemed almost randomly chosen with little consistency with the story. I also found the enunciation, intonation and emphasis to sound almost intentionally awkward and unnatural.

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure why I bothered to listen to this book. Somehow, I recalled thinking that the earlier books were much more compelling and I don't recall being so annoyed with the narration.

It's possible I've just become jaded or bored, so take my review as just one listener's opinion. I love Brandon Sanderson and recently enjoyed listening to Words of Radiance quite a lot, but felt disappointed with Warbreaker, which I enjoyed when I read (not listened) to it years ago. So maybe I'm just experiencing listening fatigue.

Here are my takeaway impressions having just completed listening to the book.

I didn't feel any attachment to the characters. I can't articulate precisely why, but it may have been due to my overall disappointment with the entire experience. I found the writing lazy and blunt in far too many instances--emotions and thoughts that should have been simple to convey with subtle story telling were described with absolutely no nuance. The plot didn't hang together and felt slapped together.

I normally do not write many reviews except for a few 5 stars however when I read the reviews for this book on audible they were all 1-2 star reviews even though the majority of the ratings were 4-5. I liked this book, was glad the trilogy did not end and gave it 4 stars. I have enjoyed this series so far and would recommend it to all my friends who also enjoy listening to sci-fi books.

The Ending Of A Trilogy Without An Ending

So here we are, in what is billed as the third book in the Shadowdance Trilogy. In the first book, you have the story of Thren Feldhorn, leader of the thief guilds who terrorrise the city of Vehlderan, and his son Arron/Hearn, who learns to despise his father as he grows to be an adult. In the second book you have the now adult Arron/Hearn, who is now The Watcher.

Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere...oh my.

Fountain of Secrets is the second installment of presumably four (considering the four powerful relics) books in the series.

The story picks up immediately after the conclusion of the first book, Guardians of Stone, leaving Kendall, Jake and Nathan back at Nathan's mansion to contemplate and think about the events that have occurred in Italy. Soon Kendall and Jake once again find themselves on another mission by Nathan which, not surprisingly, delves them into another relic hunt or mystery, danger and secrets.

This second installment is very similar to the first; however, it definitely lacks in the action and is more built on the romance. The plot itself revolves around Kendall, Jake and Nathan searching for the Fountain of Youth. With Nathan keeping secrets, he is rarely with the group until the later parts of the books which proved to be a bit annoying - especially with the developing romance.

The characters were nearly identical to what we saw in the first book except with the continual bonding and openness we see with all of them. Kendall is noticing both Jake and Nathan are more than just her coworker and boss. Jake is noticing how much he is starting to care for Kendall as a women. Nathan is still mysterious as ever, but we start to see him being more open, caring and protective of the girl he seems to love and the man he thinks a brother.

The developing plot took an interesting turn and quickly lead to tales of King Arthur and his knights. Though most people know of the tales of King Arthur, with the first book being about the Spear of Destiny, I had no idea that this would lead to King Arthur in anyway. I found it both intriguing that it took this route and very confusing and farfetched.

As we found out in the first book, it is hinted that one of these two men may or may not be Kendall's long lost friend and first love, Adam. With that in the air, she constantly finds herself comparing them and I can't help but wonder if she is making her romantic decisions based on the past or on the present. I knew the romance would be more prominent in this book though I will admit I do not like where it is heading.

Tough slurring narration

What did you like best about this story?

The story line is good, just have to get past the narration which is can drone on.

Meant for teenagers

Put me to sleep. Narrator tried too hard with the voices and his delivery was flat. The story was too predictable and slow to develop. I guess the author was going for epic, but for me it just dragged and was filled with too many depressing moments and one dimensional characters. I guess if you were looking for a Game of Thrones type epic that's more appropriate for young adults, this might be good, but I'm gonna to pass on reading anymore of this series.

OK, but I'd like to take a crack at re-writing it

This is a pretty enjoyable book, following a pretty tried and true (if not a bit tired) formula for fantasy novels.

It falls into my "past the time" on the long drive category. It is written for adults and is done well. Didn't really come up with anything original (and missed a few opportunities for an interesting twist on the coming of age story of a young criminal with a heart of gold).

I haven't gone on to the sequel yet. But I'll consider it if I can't find another more interesting option.

The book is good

The story carries it self well can't wait to hear the next book. The narrator talks fast and gives almost all the characters Irish accents. Overall it was an enjoyable book

ANYONE. Anyone but him. His accents are terrible, he sounds like he's reading to middle schoolers, he has inflections at all the wrong places.

He's spoiled from writing Star Wars

I love this author's ability to push the Story forward. However, when using characters that no one is familiar with and magic systems that no one has seen before, more is required from an introduction.

I spent half the story not giving a care about more than half the characters.

As with Darth Bane, Drew storytelling is amazing

Even in the same guideline as all epic fantasy, his world is build with originals ideas. Can't wait to start the second book.

An Awesome Book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story was very well written and very in depth with an entertaining twist. This is not a fast read. This is a book that you need to take in and savor. Its nice to read a book that you can not predict chapter to chapter.

What other book might you compare Children of Fire to and why?

It's like a cross between Star Wars and and Fantasy. In a good way. This is a slow developing story with good background and information. There are many characters to keep up with and if you speed read it, you will lose out on the best parts.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the character development. It's nice to get in on the ground floor.

Tarl goes to the Barrens of Gor in search of one with whom he once shared Paga (Part 2)

Savages and Blood brothers are really one story. Savages contains more of Tarl's internal dialog, and marks a turning point in the character's mind. It can be very harsh to listen to, and if there is one novel up to this point that a reader may find objectionable, Savages is the one. Blood Brothers is somewhat less harsh. Tarl travels to the Barrens of Gor, one again without the approval of Priest King go-between, Samos of Port Kar. This area is inhabited by tribes of the "Red Savages" (remember this term is supposed to be translated Gorean) who permit very few white outsiders. There are a number of very memorable characters, and by the time one gets to Blood brothers, Tarl has begun to work out some of his long term internal issues. If one has followed him this far, the turning point in his internal dialog, told to us whether we want to hear it or not, is a welcome change. There are some lessons to be learned in Blood brothers that have nothing to do with Gor, Slavery, or Sexuality. The author lets some of his background come though here. I will not comment on his identity, he isnt someone famous, and it is not secret. I mention this because I know that knowing the authors real name, day job and education can be a spoiler for some readers. I'll insert this comment here too.

In the late 90's I was offered the opportunity to be a "go-for" assistant to Mr. Norman, but his wife (yes, wife...) became ill and he cancelled his lecture.

An Epic series in the making.

This is part two of a series. Part one is 'Range of Ghosts'. Hopefully Audible will list them as a series soon.

The followers of the Eternal Sky seem to be based on the Mongols, at the time when their empire was being torn apart by a war of succession, and other characters are from neighboring empires based on those along the Silk Road, but in this world, there are hungry ghosts, djinn, ghuls, rocs, clever magicians and dark sorcerers. Bear's characters seem very human, and she's got a real talent for description. Once you're immersed in their gritty, day to day lives enough to almost feel the gait of a steppe pony beneath you, the supernatural seems to fit right in.

Objections

Aahz and Tanada lead the cast of characters in this book. It still has humor and witty dialogue, but there are several talking inanimate objects. I am not really a fan of animating many objects because I find it hard keeping all of them separate in my mind, especially when the names are unusual. Aahz is still his irascible self, but his noble side also shines through. I am hoping that Myth Inc. will get back together. It would be nice to have a story with the main characters together again. The narrator did a great job as usual.

Highly recommend this one!

One of the stories that didn't come off as a tired Mystra rehash. This was a fun read and gives some more juicy background as to El's life.

Just "okay"

If you've never read one of Ed's novels, I wouldn't start here. If you have, then you might like it. I have read several of his books, but I didn't think this one was special. Too many plot lines take too long to unwind, and there are too many characters with similar and/or multiple names the reader must keep track of. Elminster doesn't do much in this story, so if you want that, then look to some of the earlier novels.

I don't think the Old Mage, as he is written, is charming or clever, and there were some slap stick scenes that were drawn out and unfunny.

Only for Realms addicts

Ed Greenwood created an amazing universe! Then filled it with one-dimensional characters. I freaking LOVE the Realms books, but the whole Elminster series has turned completely predictable.

Another exciting adventure

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the various characters. It seems to be a story within a story, which is not a bad thing. Overall I really did enjoy this book.

Mostly uninteresting.

I honestly had to struggle to get through this book. It was uninteresting except for a few places. I only trudged my way through because I'm nearing the end of The Sundering series and I want Elminster's entire backstory.

Great Story!

the keep on the borderlands was a great adventure when it was first written ages ago. In fact, I went back and pulled out the old adventure just to see how well it lined up with the story. Come to find out, it lined up perfectly. Including, treasure, monsters, & a surprise bit near the end. overall, this is a great story taking a classic Dungeons and Dragons adventure, and putting what we do around the table into a novel.

The module is better than the book

What did you like best about Keep on the Borderlands? What did you like least?

I really wanted to like this book, but it was okay at best. The performance was fine, the story just takes entirely too long to get going. Those of you who are D&D players likely like me have fond memories of this module. Remember how the background and information about the environment around the keep was there but relatively short, and the information about the caves was extensive? This book is the opposite. I did not hate the book, it was an okay read, but I was disappointed and it is by far the weakest book of the six in this series.

Has Keep on the Borderlands turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

What about Bernard Setaro Clarks performance did you like?

Was Keep on the Borderlands worth the listening time?

Yes, but just barely. I finished it and didn't quit listening, if that means anything.

Read the other books in this series, there are some real gems in there.

Just what it needed to be.

Many have panned this book's pacing, but I disagree. The long build up to the climax helps to flesh out the key characters, and give the world an lived in feel. More than any other Forgotten Realms, or Pathfinder Tales novel this really does feel like a D&D campaign. I feel it should be required reading as an example of how to plan for an adventure.

Too many boring characters

Loved this module as a kid and have many fond memories of it. This does not do it justice except for some moments like Bree-yark,Mad Hermit, and the Ogre. Poor Keep-men used as cannon fodder. Too many characters that I did not care about and forgot. Super priest who only starts doing his job at the end. Most interesting character was the barbarian if very predictable.

God Molding: A little flat, but fun

If you are looking for a light hearted book that you can just sit back and enjoy, than this is your book!

It follows closely the mold of reluctant hero, who finally accepts destiny, and then comes to be the most powerful (like god-status) and vanquishes evil. I think their were some really nice deviations, like her romantic independence, and the capability of other female characters besides just the main character. That being said, it's still sweetly simple, and doesn't require a lot of thought. I won't be reading the sequels, but this book is complete enough to be a stand alone.

not wowed, very basic story and a few mispronounced words by the reader. i am not in love, not even worth using it as a time waster.

Great book, a little slow

Let me start by saying that I love this book and the entire series. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because out of the trilogy, this book is the slowest. That said, the character development is believable and complex enough to be interesting. Reisil begins as a somewhat whiney character, but evolves throughout the course of the book. For animal lovers, this is an awesome fantasy book that have animals play a main role (but not in a cliche'd way). Overall: Highly recommend this book and the entire series.

I just loved this novel when I found it a few years ago in my local store. The narrator does a wonderful job of bringing the pages to life.

Great fantasy listen!

Really enjoyed this book and can't wait to hear books 2 & 3. Recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fantasy novels.
