Winner of the Costa First Novel Award 2015. Shortlisted for the Independent Book Week Award 2016.
If it had another name, I never knew, but the locals called it the Loney - that strange nowhere between the Wyre and the Lune where Hanny and I went every Easter time with Mummer, Farther, Mr. and Mrs. Belderboss and Father Wilfred, the parish priest.
It was impossible to truly know the place. It changed with each influx and retreat, and the neap tides would reveal the skeletons of those who thought they could escape its insidious currents.
No one ever went near the water. No one apart from us, that is. I suppose I always knew that what happened there wouldn't stay hidden for ever, no matter how much I wanted it to. No matter how hard I tried to forget....
    Critic Reviews:
"Modern classics in this genre are rare, and instant ones even rarer; The Loney, however, looks as though it may be both." (Sunday Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
Dark disturbing and gloomily beautiful masterpiece
This is a real masterpiece of dark English gothic set on the bleak and isolated Lancashire coast. Everything about this story is slightly unhinged, including a teenage boy looking after his older mute and child like sibling, a pregnant child woman and a fierce and dominant mother berating her husband for coughing and the priest for not leading his flock according to her manical expectations. Listen out for the albino cat with eyes that look like they have been marinated in blood, the woman wearing a liver coloured dress and the bricked up room contains only a bed and childrens toys. From this alone you will glean that the author has an immensely visceral talent for describing the world. This is filled with a cast of oddball characters and enough shadowy damp intensity to keep you shivering throughout the winter months. I love this genre but it is very hard to find it done well. Rest assured that in this case the author succeeds magnificently in conjuring up a genuinely disturbing story that will surely become a classic on a par with M R James and H P Lovecraft. Full credit should go to the brilliant narrator who delivers a range of accents with great aplomb. This is a highly recommended listen an I urge you to choose this unabridged version. You really dont want to miss a thing.
A mystery wrapped in an enigmatic landscape
Every now and then an exceptional first novel like The Loney comes along. It's not easy to classify - it pares sliver after sliver from a psychological onion of a plot; it has elements of gothic creepiness, even horror; it gets inside a fanatical and unhappy group of people expecting a miracle from God... Binding everything together is the eerie, bleak sweep of 'wild and useless' coastline in north-east England with its treacherous tides which consume all in their path
The main events are set in 1976 when the middle-aged narrator Tonto was 15. His parents are part of an annual pilgrimage to a shrine accompanied by their Catholic priest who is replacing the much-loved Father who very recently died in mysterious circumstances. The group is riddled with tension and dissension, driven by Tonto's fervent mother who believes if they can but reach the shrine, God will cure the mutism of Hanny,Tonto's disturbed older brother.

    Title: Plague Nation
    Subtitle: Ashley Parker Novel
    Author: Dana Fredsti
    Narrator: Dana Fredsti
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-15
    Publisher: Secular Media Group, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Sequel to the thrilling zombie novel Plague Town
Ashley Parker was an ordinary woman who was also a "wild card", immune to the emerging zombie plague, drawn unwillingly into a shadowy paramilitary organization. Having been ambushed in San Francisco, which is now fully engulfed in the zombie plague, Ashley and the wild cards must pursue the enemy to San Diego. There they will discover a dark organization that seeks to weaponize the plague. But that isn't the worst news. The plague itself has gone airborne, making it transferable without physical contact. It cannot be controlled by anyone, so reports of the zombie swarm are coming in from across the United States - and across the world.
    Members Reviews:
Written for horror movie fans, so I had to love it!
This second novel in the Ashley Parker series is fast paced and believable, with unique characters you can identify with, especially the ones that quote movies I love. The heroine is a bit more narcissistic than I'd prefer, but this just gives her the chance to go on her own journey of self discovery. Weapons and tactics are accurate, which is a pleasant contrast to the usual zombie fair. The zombie situations are also at times unique, not just the typical slogging gore fest. The concept of wild cards who are mortal but relatively immune to zombie bites is a great twist. Recommend this series to fans of zombies, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost Girl, Army of Darkness (props to the author for her movie roles) and yes, even the Walking Dead.
    conspiracies and containment failures
Middle book syndrome shows up since the characters and action are more interesting in the context of the the first book, but Plague Nation manages to be a satisfying read nonetheless. It left me more than ready to read the final book, but not feeling cheated. Plague Nation expands not just the outbreaks of the zombie virus, but the playing field for heroine Ashley and the zombie fighting secret society she'd been recruited into after surviving a zombie outbreak in her little college town. It becomes clear the outbreak(s) aren't random or accidental and her group has likely been betrayed from within after sabotage blows up the lab where they were working on a potential cure and one scientist is nearly killed and another nearly kidnapped by mysterious forces.
Long day's zombie-killing journey into night...
I enjoyed this book on so many levels . . . It was so easy to visualize what's going on, following the desperate journey of the wild cards to the next potential safe spot, knowing that it's all building to an epic climax in Plague World . . . I loved the gallows humour, so necessary in the world that Dana Fredsti has created, and indeed, in our world, too. Watching her protagonist, Ashley, learn to cope with the reality of her situation, and the clock ticking down on it, was absolutely riveting. And then the sinister back-story revealing itself -- the machinations of the zombie outbreak -- it's maddening not having the answers laid out in front of me, guaranteeing that I will be getting a copy of Plague World at the earliest opportunity.
Fredsti's love for the zombie genre in film and text is definitely clear in this book, as well as her love for San Francisco.

    The picture frame
    Any additional comments?
Like all of Iain Rob Wright books, this one is captivating and quite creepy. Malefic objects make for an interesting subject and the author was able to give life to an inanimate picture frame. The characters are very believable and mostly likeable. If you want to spend 2-3 hours in a strange but fascinating world, this book is for you. It will keep you listening for a long period of time.
    Horror Novel
What did you like best about The Picture Frame: A Horror Novel? What did you like least?
This is horror at its best! No zombies or vampires or apocalypses, just great ghostly, haunting, scary stuff. This was perfect supernatural entertainment for a couple of cold and cloudy nights. Keep up the great work and I look forward to more hauntings
    Fun and Scary
If you could sum up The Picture Frame: A Horror Novel in three words, what would they be?
If I could sum up "The Picture Frame" in three words, the three words I would use would be "Creepy," "Interesting" and "Fun."
Who was your favorite character and why?
Blake was my favorite character because he was written as a real guy with real issues. He was someone a lot of us can relate to.
What does Nigel Patterson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Having read "The Picture Frame" when it first came out, I thought I knew what to expect. I couldn't have been more wrong. Nigel adds a certain intensity to specific parts of the story that make it far more scary than it was when I read it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I won't give away spoilers, but there was a death of a very interesting character that, when narrated, was very moving.
    Any additional comments?
Nigel's voice with Iain's writing are an amazing combination. I hope the two continue working together. Nigel always produces top-notch audiobooks, and there's no denying the fact that Iain writes very well. The two make a great team.
    The Picture Frame
This is a good old fashioned haunted relic story.I loved it.Nigel Patterson was a wonderful narrator,as usual. The story goes like this.Boy and dad go out with a metal detector to 'bond'.Boy finds a picture frame buried. Now WHY would someone do something like that?Maybe because it's haunted and bad things happen when you use it.
I was given this book for an honest review.
    The Twighlight Zone!
What did you love best about The Picture Frame: A Horror Novel?
I loved the whole story line.

    horror at its finest!
I loved this book! It's so very different from the books I usually choose. Superbly gory, DE2 is even grosser, crasser, nastier, and demonic than book one! the ending leaves room for a sequel, which I would dearly love, as it would mean an epic supernatural battle in Hell! Darby Croasdale did an amazing job narrating, with her expressive voice and great talent.

    Title: Family Night Audible Edition
    Author: Tom Miller
Tim Miller has created one hell of a horrifically twisted story line. It really surprised me. Fast paced, action packed and undeniably psychologically thrilling. I Loved it!
The narrator was enjoyable for the most part, however, she did stumble a few times. Her voice is engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat.
I don't use spoilers in my reviews, they can really spoil a story for others. I will say this much, it is not for the faint of heart.
Recomended for the 18+ Horror fan bout there. The story line is fantastic.
    Lovetiggi's Book Reviews
    Disturbing!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I only have one friend that I would recommend this book to. The rest of my friends are way too sensitive to ever read anything this twisted!
What other book might you compare Family Night to and why?
The ONLY comparison I could make is to another Tim Miller book. There just isn't another book that I've ever read that is as psychopathically deranged as this! I might compare it (in sheer twisted vulgarity, anyway) to The Human Centipede, which is a horrific movie on Netflix.
What does Molly Barrel bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She brings the book alive, makes it more real (shudders!). Her voice will probably feature in my nightmares for years!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and no. Its relatively short length encourages you to want to just finish it, but I had to take several "shock" breaks. My brain would scream "PAUSE!" and I'd have to go find a puppy to snuggle. Eep!
    Any additional comments?
This book was written by an extremely talented author, with a really scary imagination. It's not for everybody. The title of my review (disturbing) is a major understatement... Is there a word for how twisted and messed up this family is?

Are you scared of the dark... ?
    You will be.
Jack Pagan might as well be four months old. He awoke in a hospital after suffering a head injury that left him dead for over 67 minutes. All of his long-term memories were destroyed. Now he has to start his life again. His accidental flirt with death left him a special gift. In those few minutes as he fades off to sleep each night, and in those early hours of the morning as he numbly awakens, he sees them.
At first the shadows would just stretch into strange shapes and forms. Jack thought that he was hallucinating. That his medication was playing with his vision. Then the strange shadows began to walk around, moving freely. Jack chalked it up to a brain tumor. Some disease in his cerebral cortex. Schizophrenia, even. Something he could live with.
Now these creatures are haunting not only his nights but his days. And they have a tendency to show themselves around people who are about to die. Seeking help, he turns to a psychic who gives him a very special book. A book that he was destined to find. Jack learns that the only way he will ever know about who he was is to face his worst fears and die... again.
In a series of incredible twists and turns, Jack finds out that the worlds of the living and the dead are much closer than any of us can possibly imagine. And monsters...are real.
A little bit of horror, some suspense, a lot of paranormal, and even a bit of romance...
    Members Reviews:
this was a pretty entertaining story
This book follows the journey of Jack Pagan (the snazzy alternative to 'John Doe'), a man suffering from amnesia following an accident. Since waking up, Jack now has the ability to cross over into the land of the dead and communicate with the spirits he meets there - he also has the ability to see the dark creatures that follow the living before their demise. I found this story oddly (pun intended) reminiscent of the Odd Thomas series which I have read recently though there are some key differences that stop them from being too alike.
The story takes place in the first person, namely Jack, so that we can see the world as he does from his limited perspective. I found this to be an interesting take at the beginning, however it did begin to get a little tedious by after a little while as the story became more predictable and listening to Jack being used by all the other characters began to tick me off.
This is a very character driven novel, everything we learn about the world we learn through Jack's thoughts and the conversations shared with the people close to him - unfortunately, I found it very difficult to bond with Jack and then struggled to invest myself in the rest of the book. Even though he is mild mannered and pleasant, I found his tendency towards naivety and being easily led by those around him to be really frustrating.
The book covered some interesting and dark concepts such as death, the power of the living and human identity - but the author tries to keep it light with some humour, sometimes it works... sometimes it doesn't. All in all, this was a pretty entertaining story - if you're a fan of the Odd Thomas series or supernatural mysteries, this could be the book for you.
I find it quite difficult to rate the narration of this book as it was told in the first person, and I personally didn't really like the main character.
