not believable and written to a formula
the promise was there to start with but gradually the story got quite formulaic. None of the suspense that mcbride packed into his previous novels. Top marks to the performer though.

Very good book with a satisfying ending
I really, REALLY enjoyed this book. It was a little tedious at first, but quickly the pace picked up and the book was off and running.
One of the more unusual things about this book that I have never seen before is that the author is also the main character with the same job. The MC is a writer of books about the paranormal, especially books dealing with satanism. He is an atheist who doesn't believe in the devil anymore than he believes in God, but he does believe there is evil in the world, and he writes about it in its many forms.
It during his research for his latest book about a devil worshiping group known as the Nine Angels that the trouble really begins when he goes with his homicide detective sergeant friend to a mental hospital to witness the interrogation of woman named Jennifer Booth who is the main suspect in a grizzly murder. She notices him behind the two way mirror that she cannot possibly see through. Conrad, on the other hand, is convinced that she is is innocent of the charges and vows to find a way to prove it.
However, when those connected with the investigation begin dying all over the place Conrad gets scared. But when a park ranger tries to firebomb his house with him in it and a rogue police officer appears at his door ready to kill him Conrad kills his first two people and goes on the run with his dog.
If you want to know all of what leads up to this point or what happens next you are just going to have to read the story or listen to the audio book. I have the sequel to this book already on my Android tablet ready to be listened to in just another day or two.
I can only hope that the sequel is as exciting as the original.
I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review!
    reader be warned
    Any additional comments?
(I received a free copy for an honest review.)
After a very graphic opening, I wasnt sure if I wanted to continue listening. Ultimately, Im not sure if Im glad I kept going.
Mr. Jones does an exceptional job weaving reality with fiction. For the conspiracy buff inside, this is the perfect first step into a deep paranoia.
Very well written, I did question whats real a few times, and because of that I couldnt help but keep listening, dragged into an adult wonderland of twisted reality.
It feels as if there is only one character in the book and his is the only reality. However, his explanations seem plausible enough that when he says Google it, youre sorely tempted, except that you want to hear more rather than be distracted by search pages.
    A child for the devil
    Any additional comments?
The premise is a Satanic cults are thriving in the internet age and the writer discovers them while researching for his novels. He encounters them personally while assisting in a murder case and becomes a target.
    Exciting
This is a spellbinding story with strong characters and an exciting plot. Very good narration. This book will definitely keep you listening.
    W.K.C.
    Brilliant!
What made the experience of listening to A Child for the Devil the most enjoyable?
    Another great read/listen from Conrad.

Another great story to snuggle up with!
Another great story by Karin! The details in this story are fantastic, the house, the characters, the mystery, it will set your imagination in action! Always a pleasure to get immersed in an Anna Denning story! You won't be disappointed.
    Good & Creepy Mystery
In the second book of the series, Anna Denning's genealogy work brings her in contact with a new list of interesting--and some deeply creepy--characters. Anna's work centers on Sparrow House and the untouched family records within it. Kaufman has a fresh, even off-kilter, take on the "haunted house" theme. It got under my skin---even more so when the mystery was solved and I looked back on some of the scarier moments with a new perspective. This one really stuck with me. You'll have to read it to find out why!
Karin is a clear, concise writer, and Sparrow house has a twisty plot and a fabulous setting. Heroine Anna is smart and tenacious, and she's not easily intimidated. I spent about half of my time cheering her on and the other half wishing she'd take her dog and go home, and lock all the doors for a couple years! This mystery has cozy elements (love the Colorado mountain town where it takes place) but it's packed with tension. I'd classify it as a mostly clean read, with several events that might be disturbing to some readers.
The narrator, Becky Doughty, has the kind of voice that "disappears" when you listen to her. Neither bland nor overly dramatic, she's clear and smooth. I love it when the narrator doesn't get between me and the story, and she is one of the best.
    Good Mystery
Sparrow House, by Karin Kaufman, is a good mystery through and through. Although second in a series the book is easily a stand alone read. Murder, mystery and mayhem, add a touch of romance and you will be reading through the night to finish the book. Genealogist Anna and her friend are staying in a supposedly haunted house. And just what are those sounds during the night--did you just hear that? Why are the pictures moving? Wait a second that was not there last night! And just who is Alice? The author does a great job of posing lots of questions for the reader to try to figure out and wraps it all up in a surprise ending. Twists and turns, tension and suspense, friends and enemies...Sparrow House has it all. And where did that name come from anyway!
Becky Doughty did a marvelous job with the narration, making for an enjoyable listening experience.

    A Cliche Concept Well Executed
If you could sum up Seeders in three words, what would they be?
    The trees watch
    Which scene was your favorite?
I think one of the scenes towards the end was my favorite, when Jenny was half mad and digging in the dirt, basically digging her own grave.
    Any additional comments?
The romantic subplot between the two teens was not something I enjoyed, or I felt the story needed. However, over all though the concept was executed well enough that I suspended my disbelief and wanted to keep listening. I finished in three days with only minimal interruptions and I look forwards to my next listen.
I think I will go work out in the garden...
What made the experience of listening to Seeders the most enjoyable?
Actually does have some rather interesting twists and turns, featuring characters that, while maybe abit too shallow ( at least intially ) turn out to be more complex and this makes the story that much more enjoyable.
What other book might you compare Seeders to and why?
Triffids, anything to do with Pod People, anything to do with plant/human communication.
What about Janie Brookshires performance did you like?
I had somewhat of a tough time with her at the start ( and, dare I say, she did as well! ) . However, we both warmed to the task, and I was taken by her work in the last 3rd.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Honey, please cut the lawn?!
    Any additional comments?
This is a very entertaining offering, much more so than I originally thought when I read about it and started listening. Bookshire's teenage girl is excellent, and she brought to life some domestic drama at the start that was truly discomforting.
Not to be too trite ( but somewhat so ! ) this book does..ahem..grow on you.
    Recommended!
    Ok
Not the worst story I've ever listened to.

    Members Reviews:
    A Disappointing Sequel
After reading the phenomenal "Vacation," I really looked forward to this sequel. Unfortunately, "Home" is not the novel that the first book was. In fact, it is not even close. Without getting into too many specifics of the story as I do not wish to give any spoilers to people who have not read "Vacation" as of yet. I will say that the book picks up where the first book ended. It did contain a brief rehash of the events in "Vacation" to bring us back up to speed. Where the book fails is that while "Vacation" was extremely original and exciting, "Home" feels like a rehash of season three of "The Walking Dead" and I am sure once you read it you will understand that statement.
The writing also is not near as tight as it was previously. There are many things, the way it was written, that are jarring and will make you stop and go back and reread. It actually didn't feel like the same person wrote this book. I am not sure if it was a different editor or if the author just decided to write this book differently, but it is very different in style. The first two-thirds of the book I just kept getting a sense of Deja-Vu, Walking Dead style. I so wanted to love this novel, but it just left me flat. The book hovered at 2 stars until the final third which did redeem the book a bit and made me pull it up one more star as it did contain a few nice twists. Also, I did love how he evolved the daughter, Kate's character. He really developed her and made her a very strong character. I am not sure if the author is planning a third novel in the series, but if so he did make a nice scenario that could bring her front and center as the main character.
While very disappointed, I would read a third book in the series just to see what happens. Hopefully it will be better that what this turned out to be.
    gripping post-apocalyptic survivor thriller
After the assault by the feral cannibalistic Can Heads left his Brooklyn police bat partner dead and him injured, NYPD police officer Jack Murphy, accompanied by his wife Christie and their two kids (Kate and Simon) go on Vacation to the Upstate fortified Paterville Family Camp. There he and his family eat old fashion real food, drink pure water, and have fun until he sacrifices himself to keep his beloved family safe (see Vacation).
Christie, Kate and Simon are shocked by what happened to their dad, but have no time to grieve if Jack's last actions are to be meaningful. They barely escape from the Paterville Family Camp, but fear there is no sanctuary anywhere in a world gone mad.

    Publisher's Summary:
If Evil had fortified secret strongholds across the globe, the red church was certainly one of them.
Award-winning author Scott Nicholson returns to the Blue Ridge Mountain legends and setting of his best-selling thrillers, The Red Church and Drummer Boy.
When wealthy developer Larkin McFall moves to the small Appalachian Mountain community of Barkersville, generations-old tales of supernatural phenomena, sudden deaths, and odd disappearances resurface. Larkin laughs off the stories as superstition, while promising to bring a bright new future to the dying town.
Sheriff Frank Littlefield senses a diabolical motive in McFalls good intentions. High school friends Bobby Eldreth and Ronnie Day also suspect that an evil menace has invaded Barkersville, but both soon fall under McFalls spell. Has the sinister presence that once infiltrated the abandoned - perhaps haunted - red church spread to the community as McFall turns the family property into a luxurious subdivision?
When those who oppose Larkin McFalls ambitions begin to die horrifically - or even worse, become the mans biggest supporters - Sheriff Littlefields investigation uncovers a man with no past and no fingerprints.
A man who destroys people by giving them exactly what they want.
    Members Reviews:
    Soooooo Good!
The beginning started out a little slow but once it started to pick up, the story skyrocketed! Definitely enjoyed the story.
    Ending?
Was the author in a hurry to finish this book? Very strange, unfulfilling ending.
Another good read from Scott Nicholson
I really enjoyed the Red Churcg and Drummer Boy and McFall combines the two, with Ronnie and his family from The Red Church, Bobby from Drummer Boy, and Sheriff Littlefield, ready to retirement. The McFalls were hated and feared by the small Appalachian town of Barkersville and when the last one dies everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Then out of the blue along comes another McFall. He seems nice to everyone, pulls down the old Red Church and has big plans for building a new subdivision on the ill-fated McFall property. Nothing is what it seems when evil comes to town.
    THIS IS BOOK 2
This would have been a LOT better had I known it was the second book, now I have to go and read the first book - after searching for it, because it doesn't say that it's a series.

    Or do you die?
    Members Reviews:
Taut, quick, it carried me away.
    Any additional comments?
I follow and sometimes chat with Collings online, and I see him at conferences and conventions sometimes. When an author is this accessible, you sometimes forget that in addition to being an all-around nice guy, he is also a damn fine writer. I was reminded of that as I listened to "Strangers." Strangers has a literary--but not pretentious--writing style: visceral descriptions, deep character penetration, rich verbs that clench the scene. I loved how insightful the descriptions and narrative were--they added a whole other level of depth to the novel.
The characterization was fabulous. I felt like I really was inside the head of a tired, desperate, lonely, forty-something man. That sounds depressing, but it really wasn't. The character's voice is authentic and active, and even when he's exhausted and terrified, he's fighting, It was easy to follow along with the ride.
And the pacing was perfect. It grabbed me, it held me. The slow amping of tension as the family grows more desperate. The increased revelation of secrets. The twists on the classic horror tropes. lt was all great. Plus, it had the possibility of a sequel, which would be nice.
All in all, if you're looking for something to sweep you away while you put miles on the car or treadmill or load the dishwasher or fix the car or put on your makeup for the umpteenth time, this is a good pick! I'm thrilled that Collings has an Audible presence now and I and look forward to scooping up his other works.
    I love this book!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a great book! To be honest though, having both listened to the audiobook and read it in print, I would try to get a friend to read it in print first. But that is no fault of the narration of the audiobook. I just think this is one of those books that is great to read.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I thought the narrator did a worthy job and put a good voice to the book and characters.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    This book is pretty disturbing.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book for anyone that likes horror and thrillers.
    Creepy Claustrophobic Horror Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Strangers to be better than the print version?
Yes, just because the addition of the different voices and especially Jerry's internal monologue allows the narrator to adapt certain affectations that add to the storytelling experience.
What other book might you compare Strangers to and why?
I'm not sure of any books I'd compare it to, but in terms of movies there is a good deal similar with the Cube series of movies only instead of literal booby traps it's the characters secrets in Strangers that cause most of the conflict. In terms of just being a book in which a family is forced to confront their problems there are many examples.
Which character as performed by Jeffrey Kafer was your favorite?
I liked the performance of Jerry, the patriarch of the family.

    The Starter House
I think I expected a little too much from this book, I thought the read up sounded like a good little ghost story but i was wrong. It is not a bad little story but I wanted more to happen and it didn't, I love the books that give you the creeps and this did not for me its a mild little ghost story not scary or gory.
A creepy, by the numbers, ghost tale.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would avoid some of the more overused gothic horror tropes, but it isn't painfully cliched.
If youve listened to books by Sonja Condit before, how does this one compare?
    I haven't so I can't compare but she's a competent writer.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
When we first meet the ghost...
Do you think The Starter House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, it's a self contained story.
    Any additional comments?
An entertaining, if a tad predictable ghost story, with strong narration.
Once Started you won't want to stop
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - I really enjoyed this book. It kept me gripped and at times made me nervous.
What did you like best about this story?
    Good descriptions.
Have you listened to any of Cassandra Campbells other performances? How does this one compare?
No - first book with Campbell's narration. I found her voice slightly grating at times especially when she was a male character.

Editors Select, January 2014 - I very rarely, if ever, choose a Historical Fiction book to read for pleasure. After skimming a brief summary of The Visionist I decided to give it a try and Im very happy I did. The story follows the unique and haunting experiences of Polly Kimball a 15 year old girl who kills her abusive father and finds refuge in a tight-knit Massachusetts Shaker community. Unexpectedly, Polly is hailed within the group as a Visionist. With this newfound praise, and accompanying scrutiny, we watch her struggle as she adjusts to her new status, new friendships, and new life- all while keeping her harrowing past hidden. Its hard to believe that this is Rachel Urquharts debut novel- it is beautifully written, wonderfully researched, and overall a great read. Ill definitely look out for more from her in the future. Mystery Cult
Having grown up a few miles from the original Shaker upstate NY settlement in the US and having visited several former Shaker communities in NY, Massachusetts and Kentucky, I was intrigued by the premise of this novel. The book does a great job of exploring the nuances of Shaker life as experienced from both the inside and outside, all in the context of an engaging story. While Shakers tend to be remembered today for their expert hand-craftsmanship, this was only one expression of their belief system, and while many of their beliefs seem bizarre, others have a startlingly modern ring, including the equality of women and a belief in the feminine aspect of God. Well worthwhile.
Insight into the Stark World of the Shakers
This compelling story is told in three alternating voices, Polly, Sister Charity and Simon Pryor. Fifteen year old Polly and her little brother Ben are brought to the City of Hope, home of the Shakers. They are left there by their abused and distraught mother.
Polly is haunted with the belief that she set fire to the family farm, most likely killing her abusive father while he was passed out in his bed.
Polly struggles in the Shaker community to prove her purity all the while consumed with guilt; she considers herself a murderer.
When she displays what the elders believe is a mystical vision, Polly becomes the "Visionist" the colony has been waiting for. Polly struggles to become the perfect Shaker, yet she refuses to confess her "sins" to the elders.
