"[A] cleverly executed [blend] of science fiction, suspense and horror. ... a certified dark journey into madness." (David Gammon, Horror News)

Exoskeleton - now I get it
Very compelling, with scenes of cringe-inducing torture. I found myself saying "oh...oh..oh no...oh no..." a lot! This isn't about gratuitous violence - the torture scenes serve to make you understand how truly awful and hopeless the character's situation is, and also to bring about the interesting twist that I didn't see coming. The ending was somewhat abrupt, but I didn't feel like there were loose ends. Definitely recommended.
    An Excellent Novel
Where does Exoskeleton: A Novel rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Definitely one of the better ones I've read recently. Great writing style, compelling story and original plot elements that keep you guessing. The story keeps it's secrets until the climax, and while it has good detail and thought provoking sections, it never lets them get too technical or too esoteric.
What did you like best about this story?
The narrative structure is definitely the strongest part. He cuts around to various characters and scenes, stays with them long enough to convey the meaning of the scene and moves on to the next. The resulting narrative flow is excellent, it never drags and results in a real page turner. He avoids the pitfalls of this type of writing by focusing on a core cast of characters and never padding it out with throw away characters.
    Any additional comments?
This book clearly leaves some questions unanswered and there are definitely hooks for a follow-up if the author plans to write one. So if you are the type of person who wants every last detail explained, you may be disappointed.
Step below B grade novel - more horror than sci-fi
I think I must be the only reviewer here on Audible who was not paid or given a free book to review this novel. There is no way this story is even a 3 star, let alone anything higher than that. Period. Oh, and it doesn't fit in the science fiction genre - it is a horror story.
The book seems okay as it starts, but just got worse as it went on. It spent way too much time discussing/detailing torture, and the longer it went on, the more times the same (or similar) torture scenes were explored. It isn't really that graphic, just... repetitive and detailed and every torture scene was described in detail - being *just that little bit worse* than the scene before. There are only so many times we need to hear about the pain being so bad that he blacked out, or nearly blacked out, or greyed out or defecated, etc. And, seriously, all these people torturing him doesn't make any sense - there can't be an entire organization of sadists who have the sole goal of creating as much pain as is possible... as a job...
For 3/4 of the book, the torture seems pointless but it does turn out that there is some (albeit foolish) rationale behind it.

    bad konrath, bad
    Any additional comments?
As a Konrath fan I was disappointed by such a drab potrait of horror. For a short story it misses the mark on twists or turns. In the first 5 minutes you can pretty much tell the story yourself and I found myself calling this one from opening to ending credits. Konrath is better than this.
    Not So Much
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The fact that it references Jack Daniels as a character. I had high expectations.
What could J. A. Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Have Susie Breck and Dick Hill narrate, for starters. The whole way it's presented was disappointing.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I prefer how the Jack Daniels books narrated by Susie Breck and Dick Hill bring the characters to life in books by Konrath ( /anybody else) - so my dislike is that it wasn't them. The narration was NOT "bad" - it just wasn't them.
Did Wild Night Is Calling inspire you to do anything?
Hope for a new Jack Daniels book - in the manner of the first JD series - fast!
    Any additional comments?
Although it's fun to hear the author talk a bit about the premise, I wanted another JD book or for a new character to follow that I could enjoy - this wasn't satisfying to my hopes.

    Story seemed to be good...
Audio quality was VERY bad as the story progressed... Over sampling/dubbing/bad edit-jobs that really made the story hard to follow and understand (and maybe more importantly ruin the climatic building of certain spots)... It started off with only being slightly the case, but from halfway to the end it was too much to forgive... I hope the next installment can get the production quality enhanced or I will have to quit the series... I love TW Brown, too!! It's a shame the recording was as bad as it was...
    OK, won't read it again
Drove me crazy. Please learn to pronounce city's and landmarks in the PNW correctly!
I'm a native Oregonian and it was horrible to hear someone butcher our city's and landmarks through out an entire 8 hour book.
    Not half-bad
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The hero from the second part of the book should have been more consistent, at least in her attitude towards death of friends.
Was Zomblog, Book 1 worth the listening time?
It was, even though I find the heroine of the second part dull. The novel, stylized as survivors' journal, is specifically written to avoid heroic stereotypes, to be more "real". I went in expecting and wanting that, and that's what I got. I think it's overdone in the second part, and the heroice is unconvincing - however, not to the point of breaking the book.
    Any additional comments?
The recording does have many flaws, such as some background noise in the first part and unedited takes (!) in the second part. However, the narrators are emotional and confident, and that's everything I need. I would prefer a book like that to a narrator who couldn't be bothered (happens all too often in my native language).
    where the next
wow just as good as the other books none start action for one chapter to the next . what a roller coaster of emotions
    Meh
I'm on chapter 4, not feeling it, don't care for the narrator at all. I'm done, maybe give it another chance some other time.

    Publisher's Summary:
The end of America is near.
A plague that kills its victims and resurrects them as flesh-eating ghouls has decimated the American population, forcing what's left of the government to take shelter underground in the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center in Virginia.
On the West Coast, CIA black ops agent Chad Halverson and a ragtag band of survivors decide to head to Washington, DC, to find out if anyone is still in charge, even though Halverson knows that someone in the upper echelons of the government is trying to drone him. Halverson suspects the assassin is a high-level CIA employee. Whoever he is, he has tried to drone Halverson before and will try again. Of that much, Halverson is sure.
Halverson and fellow refugees Victoria Brady, Blackfoot Chogan, and Emma Lawson become trapped in Las Vegas by General Quantrill, a militia commandant who runs the strip with an iron hand and has a terrifying secret.
Halverson is a consummate liar who can't tell anyone the truth about what he knows. Victoria is a dressmaker who can't forget the child she lost to the plague. Emma Lawson is a waitress who can't (or doesn't want to) remember she lost her child to the plague. And Chogan is a Blackfoot Indian in the marines who became separated from his wife during the plague.
Meanwhile, in the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, President Cole must decide whether to start nuking his own country in order to save it from the virus that has a hundred percent kill ratio.
Whether America survives or not, it will never be the same.

Annoying dialogue. The characters constantly repeated the same things over and over. Two characters would repeat the same conversation for several pages and just when you think it is over, they start the same conversation again but the characters switched sides. Longest book ever.
Zombies all around, let's go to Vegas!
Disclaimer: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
It's actually happened: the zombie apocalypse is among us. Caused by a virus spreading exponentially through the population, it looks like there's no end in sight. Chad Halverson, however, is going to do his best to make it out alive. See, he knows exactly how this all started, and the government--his own co-workers, in fact--want him dead for that knowledge. Meanwhile, the President and his council are holed up in Mount Weather, ready to make some chilling decisions that will affect the entire world. Who will win, who will lose, and will we ever be the same again?
I thought this was a captivating book. The characters are intriguing; the story is one that could eventually happen, what in this day of germ warfare and other craziness; and the general tone of the book is depressing but hopeful at the same time. Jumping back and forth between Chad's group and those at Mount Weather was a very neat concept, as you could see what was REALLY going on in the world versus what the government fat-cats could see and were debating about. That group in itself was great; I felt like that's exactly what would happen in a situation like this, and the ongoing tension and escalating tempers were just perfect.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good zombie story, but also for those who want to know just what the government would do in this situation.

    Critic Reviews:
"The Calling is a powerful, gripping and terrifying novel, the sort that possesses your whole life while you're reading it; it'll stalk you through the day, and inform your dreams. Swartwood has delivered a novel that will become a classic." (Tim Lebbon, New York Times bestselling author of Coldbrook and Echo City)
"Robert Swartwood's The Calling is a diabolical rocket sled of a psychological thriller. Told through the vivid, almost druggy point of view of a young man on the edge, tangled in a web of tragedy and surreal horror, Swartwood's novel gets under the skin and stays there. Highly recommended." (Jay Bonansinga, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Walking Dead: Rise of The Governor)
"This novel is small town horror at its best." (Hellnotes)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent story, superb voice acting
The Calling is a well-paced and engaging supernatural thriller. Swartwood keeps the story going at a nice clip with plenty of twists and surprises. I listened while in the car and there were several times when I hit to sit idling in my driveway until the chapter ended so I could pull myself away. The characters are multifaceted and well-composed, and the voice acting is excellentTristan Morris is also definitely someone to keep an eye on.
    A good story, well-told
Disclosure: I received this audiobook for free in return for an honest review.
Some books spend so much time focusing on backstory that I begin to wonder when the action will start. The Calling, most decidedly, is NOT one of those books! The story begins with Chris's discovery of his murdered parents and follows his journey after that event. The Calling includes references to Bible passages as well as supernatural elements -- those details flesh out the story and also make Chris's journey even more dramatic. I found the narration enjoyable and didn't want to stop listening because I wanted to know how it all ended. The Calling is a good story, well-told.
    Creepy and entertaining
What made the experience of listening to The Calling the most enjoyable?
The plot twist and the way it moved around to lead you in a direction, then it shifted and surprised you. Very good.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Calling?
At the ending...but I won't give it away...
Have you listened to any of Tristan Morriss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.

    Publisher's Summary:
An authorized prequel to the classic ghost story Hell House
In 1927 the infamous millionaire occultist Emeric Belasco disappeared without a trace, leaving behind dozens of dead bodies in the rambling, isolated mansion known as Hell House. In 1931 a team of parapsychologists entered Hell House in order to solve the riddle of Belasco's fate, only to meet with horror, insanity and death.
Now, 9 years later, in 1940, another team of psychic and scientific experts, including the 15 year-old "Ghost Boy" Benjamin Franklin Fischer - the most gifted physical medium in modern history - return to investigate the most haunted house in the world, only to find Hell House eagerly awaiting its newest guests.

    Members Reviews:
    Not the original
I was skeptical when I first saw how short this prequel was compared to Matthesons' original Hell House. (but to be fair there stay was shorter). Then I worried about reading the prequel, because sometimes it's scarier to not know. But the allure was too Great!
As a stand alone, this is a good short story, but compared to its pregenator it falls flat. None of the characters are as deep or complex. In fact the physical appearance of the house gets more detail than the characters and their lives. This is especially true for Bilasco, the demonic ghost. The subtlety and intelligence of the house is lacking. The other major aspect that was missing was what I would call, "background detail." We get a minimal description of the doctors scientific theory of ghosts but that's it! No idea why these particular people were chosen for the expedition. Little idea of their motives for going. Little understanding of their methods and experiments. . They do not even do a full tour of the house in three days. (Never going to the basement garage). And little understanding of what they intend to do with the psychic energy of Hell House.
Finally, and I may be knitt picking, but I don't think return to Hell House matches with Hell House itself. For example Ben Fisher indicates his original group had trouble with both the keys and the generator, which they don't in this story. I don't even think the layout of the house is the same.
    Not worth the time
Very good reader but the book itself is not worth it. It's a poor prequel with little original story value on its own.
    HELL HOUSE
What did you love best about Return To Hell House?
collins cont. to keep the story graphic, disgusting and scary
What other book might you compare Return To Hell House to and why?
    HELL HOUSE
What about Jamie du Pont MacKenzies performance did you like?
just right, wherever they find these professional narrators they are great
    Any additional comments?
    good prequel, short,
fit the mood to listen to something gross and scary
    Hell House Prequel
This is a prequel to Richard Matheson's Hell House.
There you have heard that there were two previous investigations into the dreaded haunted house. One in 1931 and one in 1940, the latter of which included Ben Fisher who plays a key role in original Hell House novel. This is the story of that 1940 investigation with a 15 year old Ben caught up in the "Everest of Haunted Houses".

Title: To the Devil a Daughter
    Author: Dennis Wheatley
    Narrator: Nick Mercer

Length: 14 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-25-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Why did the solitary girl leave her rented house on the French Riviera only for short walks at night? Why was she so frightened? Why did animals shrink away from her? The girl herself didn't know, and was certainly not aware of the terrible appointment which had been made for her long ago and was now drawing close.
Molly Fountain, the tough-minded Englishwoman living next door, was determined to find the answer. She sent for a wartime secret service colleague to come and help. What they discovered was horrifying beyond anything they could have imagined.
Dennis Wheatley returned in this audiobook to his black magic theme which he had made so much his own with his famous best seller The Devil Rides Out. In the cumulative shock of its revelations, the use of arcane knowledge, the mounting suspense, and acceleration to a fearful climax, he out-does even that earlier achievement. This is, by any standards, a terrific story.
    Members Reviews:
Good old fasioned British horror/adventure story
I have been looking on Audible for some Dennis Wheatley for a long time and so downloaded this as soon as I saw it and am not disappointed. Yes the the language and characters do seem somewhat dated but if you can get past that you will find an excellent supernatural thriller. I see that The Devil Rides Out is now available and I am downloading it as I type this. I hope we see even more Dennis Wheatley on Audible very soon as I grew up with these stories and it is wonderful to have them read to me while enduring the daily commute to work.
    Cracking Yarn
This is a classic english adventure story, think 39 steps but with Devil worshippers instead of fiendish Hun swine. Its a great story and well read. If you know this kind of classic adventure story you can trace the course of the permissiveness in society through it, this is a lot more permissive than 39 steps, while still being very very twee and British.
You really should give it a go, its worth a credit, plus I would love to see more Wheatley on audible.
    very good book
well read by nick, with a good pace, a classic dennis wheatley occult thriller.
    hard to stop listening.
    Wheatley Certainly Doesn't Disappoint!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It's a fantastic story, rather slow, it's true, but an excellent denoument.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Christina, she was determined to get out of her enemies's clutches if she could and didn't know why she was as she was.
Which character as performed by Nick Mercer was your favourite?
Cannon, Nick Mercer made him sound so frightening and I wouldn't like to have met him in the street.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
John's declaration in the Cave of Bats.
    Any additional comments?
I'm very surprised that some gave up on this book. Give it another go, you won't be disappointed. Dennis Wheatley's books, I gather, have been out of print for some time and have been brought out again, so this is obviously the reason why they're appearing in Audible. The Satanist, please, Audible, if you wouldn't mind.
    Very dated and unintentionally hilarious
I got this as one of my Halloween listens because Dennis Wheatley is such an iconic figure in horror but was, sadly, unscared. In fact the satanic denouement had me giggling uncontrollably.

    great stories
American tales classic. if Bigfoot is real or not the stories are outstanding. Not some drama tv show. but just a good well told group of campfire stories that if true will make you wonder what has not been told. I am not a follower or into the bigfoot cult but always up for a good urban tale of the unknown. great book keep them coming.
    Fun and scary Bigfoot stories
Early Bigfoot accounts in the book are difficult to discern between. But later stories are announced separately. Most accounts are engrossing, and grab your attention, but some flyby without notice. I'm not sure if this is the fault of the content or the narrator.
The Original That Started the Phenomenon
This is the first book in the Bigfoot Campfire series. Unlike many Bigfoot books, this is not an "I saw one in the forest" type of story. These are actual encounters for better or worse, masterfully told with respect to individuals who have given permission for their stories to be shared. Rusty is a respectful gatekeeper. The stories will stay with you and hold up even after repeat listening. The narrator Eric Martin does a good job, he handled the first two books in this series. Richard Henzel took over for the rest of the series and I believe he does a better job at bringing the stories to life. You may not want to listen to this one while camping or at night. Well worth your time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do (they are addicting). If you do, be sure to check out other books in the series. Ten Intense Bigfoot Campfire Stories is another favorite of mine. If you do enjoy his book, check out his Rusty Bigfoot blog and say hello. He loves to hear from fans.
    Great collection of stories.
What made the experience of listening to Rusty Wilson's Bigfoot Campfire Stories the most enjoyable?
Short stories, well written and good presentation.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    "The big guy" of course.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Every story, worth the listen.
If you could take any character from Rusty Wilson's Bigfoot Campfire Stories out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    What?
Don't Listen to this While Alone in the Woods!
If you could sum up Rusty Wilson's Bigfoot Campfire Stories in three words, what would they be?
    Fun Scary Intense
What did you like best about this story?
Excellent storytelling and good narration. Addictive - you want to hear them all.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The one where the rafter is being followed by the Bigfoot. Terrifying.

    Publisher's Summary:
When 12-year-old Freeman Mills arrives at Wendover, a group home for troubled children, it's a chance for a fresh start. But second chances aren't easy for Freeman, the victim of painful childhood experiments that gave him the ability to read other people's minds.
Little does Freeman know that his transfer was made at the request of Dr. Richard Kracowski, whose research into the brain's electrical properties is revealing new powers of the human mind. Freeman simply wants to survive, take his medicine for manic depression, and deceive his counselors into believing he is happy. But when the other children develop their own clairvoyant abilities, and insane spirits begin haunting the halls of Wendover, he can't safely hide inside his own head anymore.
Because there is no escaping the enemy within....

    A chilling read.

The summary pretty much says it all so let's get straight to my thoughts.
I liked this well enough to listen to the whole book in the matter of days, which is good for me because it's over 10 hours long!! But one thing I didn't like was the narrator. He was very very dull. I found myself at times with my mind wandering, even though the story itself was intense. Daniel Dorse, while being clear and concise, was dull and boring. He didn't bring any life to the story and it felt like he read the whole book in a high falsetto voice, which was quite annoying. This is a case of reading it instead of listening to it!!
The plot was intriguing. The setting was perfect and the characters were varied and wonderfully written. I think my favourite part was the setting. The home they are in now is filled with the ghosts of people who were patients there years ago. I always find these kind of settings to be the scariest because asylums just scream haunted!!!
All the characters were awesome in their own way. Everyone of them are flawed but you can't help but root for the kids. Each of them has their own story and reason they are there but they don't deserve the likes of Dr. Kracowski nor Mr. Bondurant looking after them. Both are truly evil in their own way!
In all this is a creepy, chilling and intense read. I could totally picture this as a scary movie and one I would think twice about watching, because while I can read about ghosts etc, I am a total wuss when it comes to watching them! It scares me silly!!
*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
    Just can't get through it
What would have made The Home better?
A different narrator. There is too many whistles and the voice just grates on me. It's very slow, and dull.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Home?
Scott Nichelson writes an incredible tale
Would you be willing to try another one of Daniel Dorses performances?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Pass on this or anything else Daniel Dorse reads. It's just not good.
    Creepy paranormal horror thriller
At first I thought that Daniel Dorse's voice was too casual and world weary for the material, but it's perfect. Especially when he voices other characters.
