Next Edgar Allan Poe revisits his terrifying fear of being buried alive in "The Premature Burial". Ambrose Bierces haunting "The Moonlit Road" relates a murder tale from three perspectives, including the murdered wife's. Another Excellent Collection of Classic Horror!
Spinechillers Volume 12 has done it again with another great collection of classic horror and ghost stories. All of the stories were a pleasure to listen to, with Doug Bradley doing a fantastic performance as always. I especially liked the readings of The Music of Erich Zann and The Tool. To Be Read at Dusk is not a story I enjoy, but hearing it read by Mr. Bradley made it a bit more tolerable. The Moonlit Road is one of those stories that I was on the fence about whether I liked it or not, but after having listened to it in this collection I'm leaning more towards liking it. Make sure to pick this and all of the other Spinechillers audiobooks up if you are a fan of classic horror!
I'm not sure what was different
I was a little bored with this volume. It put me to sleep more than once.
    How is this Horror/Scary?
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I bought this book as the reviews seemed really great. Though after listening to the first story, I was perplexed. In no way was this scary or chilling or what have you.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing in this series or by this author.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator was good. He had a good voice for this genre.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    The positive reviews.
Every one of the spine chillers volumes are great!
Doug Bradley is a wonderful reader, most of the stories in the series are all classic , and it's just wonderfully atmospheric to listen to!
    Excellemt Stories of Chilling Horror
The stories are powerful haunting & will scare you witless & will leave you chilled. Do not listen just as you are drifting off to sleep, nightmares may
    follow.
All these horror stories are excellent horrifying classics. Too many to give just one example of a moment.
As good as the stories are, Doug does not do it for me, too cold & blandly repetitive as if reading from a news paper. Needs a voice with much more depth, variants in tone etc & someone with a spooky take.

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 38 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
One rainy morning in 1871 in lower Manhattan, Martin Pemberton, a freelance writer sees in a passing stagecoach several elderly men, one of whom he recognizes as his supposedly dead and buried father. While trying to unravel the mystery, Pemberton disappears, sending McIlvaine, his employer, the editor of an evening paper, in pursuit of the truth behind his freelancers fate. Layer by layer, McIlvaine reveals a modern metropolis surging with primordial urges and sins, where the Tweed Ring operates the city for its own profit and a conspicuously self-satisfied nouveau-riche ignores the poverty and squalor that surrounds them.
In E. L. Doctorows skilled hands, The Waterworks becomes, in the words of The New York Times, a dark moral tale . . . an eloquently troubling evocation of our past.

What did you love best about The Waterworks?
Amazing story with excellent historical underpinnings. Doctorow weaves a tale that combines a mystery with characters who ask the big questions.
    Any additional comments?
This book is one of Doctorow's best books and a great joy to listen to . The reader is wonderful and does the story proud. It would be a page turner if we weren't listening to it.
Quite terrific and fun and absolutely engaging.

Deeply disturbed and unquestionably spooky, Festival of Fear is a horror lover's favorite nightmare! Graham Masterton has done it again with these 12 short but terrifying stories. Robert Slade's voice performance only serves to enhance Masterton's intention to frighten. Slade is able to make us truly empathize with and fear for Masterton's character as they face down one horrifying scene after another. Fast-paced and deeply chilling, Slade and Masterton combine as a ruthless duo in these wonderfully macabre tales.

    I loved this book!
This is the first book I've listened to of Graham Masterton and I can't wait to eat his entire collection.
He's a heavy handed writer who seems as if he were writing for TV or movies with colorful plot twists.
Read with incredible gusto by Robert Slade.

    Don't waste your credit!
This is a terrible book. I am very disappointed. The story is terrible, the narrator was really bad, slow and just awful. I wish I had never used my credit for this book.
    Suspenseful and gripping
Great story; it really draws you in, right from the prologue. A good listen, as well.
    Great Ghost Story
What did you love best about The House on Serpent Lake?
The book was really creepy, which is a great thing for a ghost story.
What did you like best about this story?
The story kept me guessing, and I couldn't figure out how on earth it could possibly end nicely, but it did!
What about Alexandra G Haags performance did you like?
Very good voice. Not nasal or twangy. Just a really good reader.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend THE HOUSE ON SERPENT LAKE to anyone who likes a good, spine-chilling ghost story.
    Paranormal Thriller!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The House on Serpent Lake is a wonderful paranormal romance. A slightly different take on the usual ghost story it captivated me from the very first page. The plot will keep you intrigued, the characters well defined so much so, you'll want to keep listening to the very end.

Policing relations between Heaven, Hell, and Earth is messy and violent, but Elise Kavanagh and James Faulkner excelled at it - until coming across a job so brutal that even they couldn't stand to see one more dead body. None of their friends realize they used to be one of the world's best killing teams.
After years of hiding, something stirs. Bodies are vanishing. Demons scurry in the shadows of the night. A child has been possessed. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead
    Members Reviews:
    narration, not so good
While an enjoyable enough story line, the narrator's style was way too drawn out (and ends her words harshly). For me, it was impossible to listen as released. After taking time to download (no speed adjustment for streaming) I listed to it 1.5 faster. Whew, that's better!
    Narration spoiled the book
Would you try another book from SM Reine and/or Saskia Maarleveld?
I would try another book by this author but have made a note never to buy another book narrated by Saskia Maarleveid. Her habit of drawing out the ends of so many words was distracting and annoying. The narration made it very hard to follow the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Four best-selling authors. One hell-raising premise. What if the dead could be summoned from their graves - for a price? What if a quartet of distinctive storytellers took a stab at this deceptively simple idea - on a dare? The answers lie here, in Four Summoner's Tales, as these acclaimed writers accept the challenge and rise to the occasion - in four brilliantly chilling ways. It's all in the execution.
"Suffer the Children" by New York Times best-selling author Kelley Armstrong: A preacher and his adopted daughter must solve the mystery of the newcomers to their isolated 19th-century village - men who are preying on residents' overwhelming grief with promises to bring the stricken back to life.
"Pipers" by New York Times best-selling author Christopher Golden: Twenty-three people have already lost their lives to the ruthless cartel terrorizing their small Texas border town. But one man has a plan for revenge, if the town's survivors will let him use their loved ones - to raise an army of the undead.
"A Bad Season for Necromancy" by national best-selling author David Liss: In merry old England, a rascally con man stumbles upon a book for raising the dead. But instead of using it to make money reviving relatives for the rich, he'll do just the opposite. Because some family skeletons need to stay buried.
"Alive Day" by New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Maberry: In war-torn Afghanistan, a U.S. military operative and his team face off against an ancient horror during a harrowing off-the-books search-and-rescue mission.

  • The Magic Cottage Audiobook by James Herbert

    Title: The Magic Cottage
    Author: James Herbert
    Narrator: Kris Dyer

Length: 12 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-13-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
The nightmare home. We thought we'd found our haven, a cottage deep in the heart of the forest. Quaint, charming, maybe a little run-down, but so peaceful. The woodland animals and birds couldn't have been more neighbourly. That was the first part of the Magic. Midge's painting and my music soared to new heights of creativity. That was another part of the Magic. Our sensing, our feelings, our love for each other - well, that became the supreme Magic. But the cottage had an alternative side. The Bad Magic.
What happened to us there was horrendous beyond belief. The miracles, the healings, the crazy sect who wanted our home for themselves, the hideous creatures that crawled from the nether regions, and the bats - oh God, the bats! Even now those horrible things seem impossible to me. Yet they happened...
James Herbert was one of Britain's greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages.
Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more best-selling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.
    Editorial Reviews:
A young couple finds a dilapidated but still-idyllic cottage in Hampshire's New Forest and quickly move into their dream home. However, before long, strange occurrences begin to disturb their little paradise: ominous sounds from the attic and shadowy figures lurking among the trees. Narrator Kris Dyer builds an easy rapport with listeners as Midge and Mike settle into their home, then slowly infuses tension and anxiety into his performance as the couple cross paths with a cultish group with sinister intentions. Listeners will continue to feel the chill of this horror story long after they have turned it off.
    Members Reviews:
liked it! just a nice fun story.
To me it was a good fairly predictable story with a good ending.
But beware of the bats and crazy cultists.Mitch was a bit annoying, when she was seeking answers from her dead parents, but thank god! She saw the light just in time.kept me listening which is good as I don't always finish a book.
    Slow
This was a slow moving book, I kept waiting for more to happen but it didnt. however it was well written and I appreciated that.
    Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book. No one was an idiot or obtuse. My one negative comment is that I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator's voice for the main female character but not annoying enough to really bother me.
    It pulls you in
Great book to listen to with words that easily create the back drop in your imagination. The narrated is amazing.
    Disappointment
What disappointed you about The Magic Cottage?
The story never really got going till the very end. The ending seemed rushed.

From the author of the "wonderfully crafted" Ghost on Black Mountain comes a haunting gothic novel set in the Depression-era South about two young women who form an unlikely alliance when the spirit of a dead woman takes up residence in their home.
Shelly Parker, a sixteen-year-old servant who works for the tyrannical Pastor Dobbins and his family, has had the gift of sight for as long as she can remember. She's grown accustomed to coexisting with the spirits of the dead who roam Black Mountain, telling Shelly their stories and warning her of the dangers that surround her.

    Publisher's Summary:
For a while, it seemed as if the good times would never end, that mankind had truly become masters of our own universe, gods in our own right.
Little did we know, our time was almost up.
No one knows where it started. No one knows why. By the time the scientists figured out what was happening, it was already too late. Most of humanity perished in the first few weeks, stricken down by a fast-moving infection, only to rise up as a zombie with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Millions burned to ash when the military rained fire on the cities in a futile effort to halt the contagion. Millions more simply lay down and gave up, unable, or perhaps unwilling, to exist in a world no longer fit for human occupancy.
Despite all the death and destruction, there were survivors, brave men and women who stared into the face of annihilation and chose instead, to live. Together, they set about to rebuild civilization, to create something new and permanent out of the ruins of what came before.
    This is their story...
This omnibus combines the three Elements of the Undead books in a single volume.

started strong but left me seriously disappointed
How could the performance have been better?
almost all of the characters are male. why would you use a female narrator to narrate an almost all male cast? her female voices were ok, but her male voices were horrendous, laughingly bad, especially the teenage boys! omg, they sounded like my dogs' squeaky toy!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Elements of the Undead?
cut? cut? cut? i would ADD lots of scenes, seems like the editor cut the best scenes!
    Any additional comments?
book 1 starts off pretty good. it introduces a lot of characters in diverse situations.
megan is a prostitute who works in a brothel outside of las vegas. after her last client, her manager informs her there's some serious virus going around making people sick. they flip on the tv to see the cities imploding from seemingly rabid people attacking each other.
kevin is just waking up as his plane lands in boise, idaho. he's been travelling the last 20+ to get home. all he wants to do is get to his motorcycle and go home. however, as he jostles his way up the tunnel into the terminal, he hears screaming and passengers start running back down the departing tunnel.
alicia and brittany are finishing up their day as cashiers when something grisly happens in the parking lot.
mike pringle is flying across the u.s. when one of the stewardess calls him on his pilot's phone, reporting a really sick passenger. soon, nobody is responding and there is a banging on the cockpit door.
jack and sara are having a hard time digging a koi fish pond as a surprise birthday present for their twin daughters when jack's mother calls and tells him that something is wrong.
cesar is part of a group of illegal aliens crossing from mexico into texas. when they run into someone strange, they think the person must be half-dead from the heat.
betty hollister is the first female submarine captain. as she prepares her crew for exercises in the pacific ocean, she receives an alarming eam (emergency action alert) ordering her to release her nuclear weapons.
like i said, book 1 starts off pretty good.
