Was expecting it to be funnier like other Amelia Bedelia books. Also a little too long for my 5 1/2 yr old daughter.
    I love this book
I love this book. Amelia Bedilia has always taken Language Literally and now I see her as a young girl and how easily she continued her natural process of taking people for their exact words! She holds on to people being honest and genuine, which is sweet and innocent. In the spirit of Valentine's Day Amelia makes a mistake and finds the solution herself, so this book is a lesson that's perfect for for an elementary student.

Great book to launch you into Fall!
Red, green and yellow apples, the sound of leaves crunching under your feet, crisp fall air and to top it all off at grandma's house. This is such a wonderful book, reading it at the right time just launches you right into fall. We have added this to our in home library for our little girl. The best part is that there is a recipe for a wonderfully delicious apple pie. So what better way to read this book then top it off with a homemade apple pie, shared with your favorite people.

Really breaks it down for grade schoolers on the Gettysburg address.

    Grandson enjoyed reading this book.
    Excellent for Teaching
The book is excellent for teaching 3rd or 4th graders about the cicvil war and Lincoln's importance in it. It includes the Gettysburg Address which is great.
The true story of a great man and his famous speech
The Gettysburg Address is one of the two most famous speeches in American history, the other being Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech." But Lincoln's speech is the most important oration in our nation's history because before these 271 words were uttered at Gettysburg the United States did not really pay attention to the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and the idea that "all men are created equal." At the dedication of the National Cemetary at Gettysburg Lincoln declared that those who died did so in defense of that proposition. From that point on, all of the advances in civil rights in this country can be tied to the Gettysburg Address. When the nation was founded "men" meant free, adult, white, male, property owners. Consider today what is meant by "men" when we talk about equality in this country and you have an idea of what Lincoln set in motion. Without Lincoln's speech and the Union winning the Civil War, King would never have given his speech.
The only real shortcoming of "Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln: The Story of the Gettysbug Address" by Jean Fritz is that it fails to address the significance of the oration beyond the idea that it was a speech to remember. Fritz focuses on the story, both in general terms of the Civil War and the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the specifics of the occasion for the speech, including the sickness of Lincoln's son Tad and the lengthy oration by Edward Everett. The complete text of the speech is provided at the back of the book, which is a Level 3 All Aboard Reading book aimed at grades 2-3. The illustrations are mostly watercolors by Charles Robinson although there are also some historic photographs of Lincoln and his son. The important thing is that here is a book that tells the story of a great American speech and at least introduces to young students the idea that words can make a difference in the history of a nation.

March On! is an extremely moving read that beautifully conveys the importance and tone of August 28th, 1963 when Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered one of the most notable and important speeches ever given. I loved all the addition information in the afterward and highly recommend that it be shared with students of all ages.
    He had a dream.
March On! is a powerful book. Relating how a dream slowly gained reality and became a foundation for major changes in our country must be done over and over. Ms. King covers her subject in a very simple, yet very clear manner. She's written in a way that children can feel and comprehend what happened. Mr. Ladd's illustrations clearly depict the fears, emotions and awe of what happened on the day of the March. I recommend it for all school libraries. My 9 year old granddaughter was delighted to find a copy on the bookshelf at her school after she had read our copy. This history must be passed on to future generations.
    Powerful Story
This book is written and illustrated with a poignant beauty. I was brought to tears each time I read it.

    Members Reviews:
    Mrs.Parks Sets It Off
This book tells the day in the life of a pioneer of Civil Rights, who merely was tired of the evil
system of boarding a bus, being ordered to get up, & give up her seat.
Only because her skin color & gender defined her for the hate that festered in Birmingham, Alabama to start.
Emmitt Till's murder was the last straw, & an in-your-face "order" was the starter pistol.
I don't believe, & never have that a children's book is the know-all-end-all for your child's knowledge. It's more of an introduction to delve in & search out more.
Naturally, there should be discretion, that's where the parent comes in. Exploring a topic with only one book, to explain what history is being told, is not in just one book.
The illustrations are colorful & vivid, the story on point, but the beauty of reading with your child, or to your child is the spark of discovery & knowledge..... Your child will want more, but @her or his pace. Savoring it like a good cup of cocoa. ;o)
Students enjoyed picking up this book too for the story and ...
I bought this book to use in my elementary classroom and found that there are many ways to use this book. There are many artistic features that lend to the literary and historic lessons as well that I became aware of in an integrated arts workshop. You can use this book for many lessons if you are a teacher. Students enjoyed picking up this book too for the story and the artwork. This is a winner for your classroom library.

Excellent book for kids and grownups
Most people know the later novels of the
German writer Michael Ende: The Neverending Story
and Momo. However, his first book translated into English
as Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver and the followup
Jim Button and the Wild 13 were, perhaps, even more
popular in Germany. I still have the adventures of this
fearless pair of advneturers in vivid memory 30 years
after first encountering them, and recently reread
the first book. My only regret is that the English version is
out of print. I hope that I can find a library copy when
my children are old enough to enjoy them.

    An Engaging Mystery...
This series has a way of surprising young readers and really gets them thinking. It's nice to have a book at a pretty low level that feels like a chapter book and requires kids to infer and really think deeply about solving the mystery.
