"Unsworth unravels the story with skilled deliberation, creating a page-turning mix of suspense, intrigue, and anxiety. The kids are genuine and quirky, just the right kind of mismatched misfits to snag readers' hearts. This is a wholly enjoyable journey, and a dystopian vision with some great new twists. Title: Lemonade in Winter
    Author: Emily Jenkins
    Narrator: Rebecca Solar

    Length: 10 mins

    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
A lemonade stand in winter? Yes, that's exactly what Pauline and John-John intend to have. With a catchy refrain, plus simple math concepts throughout, here is a tale that's great for both storytime and classroom use.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent story & teaching tool!
My 3 y/o & 4 y/o especially love this story. The elder is really getting into counting and the younger is trying to keep up. What I love about the story is that it is immediately engaging. The characters are similar to my own, with the elder being the girl (like Pauline) and the younger being the boy (like John-John). The kids in the story have an idea that sensible adults wouldn't entertain in the dead of winter. But they learn some things in the end. I like that the parents let the idea go forth without stopping it.
The adventure was ripe for an organic learning experience. There are so many teaching ideas here. First of all, is the obvious--counting money. Addition, subtraction, categorizing & sorting, evaluating outcomes. Also wonderfully noted is how the plot evolves as Pauline is driven to try different ideas to make a sale. Each method can be discussed. For instance did lowering the price lead to the increase in sales? You can even discuss the value of money. Was it used wisely in this instance? I don't want to give the ending away but you can show that sometimes the truest value in money is not how much you make or keep, but in managing it wisely so that it can afford you an invaluable learning experience. Of course, having an enthusiastic and good attitude really goes far too!
The only detail that may stump some is the fact that the parents seemed to let these youngsters out to the store by themselves, unsupervised. Not something that is based in reality. But children don't get hung up on details like this. They engage fully in the adventure of the story. Whether you choose to include a discussion on safety is up to you.
I am glad I preordered this on a hunch that it would be a good teaching tool in our collection of books and I was right!! The end of the book includes a little appendix of Pauline's money counting tips. Couple this with a jar of real coins or even realistic play money and you have an entire week's worth of math activities. For the advanced thinker, I'd pose this algebraic problem: Given their total starting up costs of raw materials, how much is each cup of lemonade/limeaide/lemon-limeade worth? How many cups did they need to sell to break even at $0.50/cup? At $0.25/cup? What about the cups? How many were there? (The story doesn't say how many were in the bag)What could they do with the extra cups to offset the cost? This is a teacher & homeschooling parent's dream of a story. You could even conduct the experiment with your kids and see what they learn from it, though I am not inclined to volunteer my time outside in the freezing cold. This is destined to become a classroom favorite & children's classic. Mark my words.
Hopefully my grandson will love it when it is read to
For a baby shower as part of the theme. Hopefully my grandson will love it when it is read to him
    Loved it!
It is a great fun way to teach math and how to count money. The children enjoyed this book and learned something about money transactions. Highly recommended.
    Good Reading
No one is ever too young to set up their first business.
Pauline and John-John were so determined to make their lemonade stand a success.

Not a new storyline to me
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This book is only 4 minutes long. I did not realize this when I bought it, and expected an exciting story as it was touted as being a new take on the usual story. Turns out the version is one I have known since childhood. Disappointing!
Would you recommend The Story of the Three Little Pigs to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Nothing new to it, and irritatingly short!
    Any additional comments?
Disappointed in this audiobook. Very disappointed.

Gail Carson Levine charmed the world with Ella Enchanted, her spirited retelling of the Cinderella story. Now this award-winning author turns her attention to two more classic fairy tales, and deftly turns them upside down and inside out with her trademark wit and hilarity.
In The Fairy's Mistake, two very different sisters have two very different encounters with the fairy Ethelinda. Rosella is kind and helpful. Her reward: Jewels and gems tumble out of her mouth whenever she speaks. Myrtle is rude and spiteful. Her punishment: Bugs and vipers slither out of her mouth. The fairy Ethelinda feels she's meted out justice just right - until she discovers Rosella has been locked up by a greedy prince and Myrtle is having the time of her life!

    Publisher's Summary:
There she was, chartreuse and warty and smiling at him. Such a nice smile. Something in his heart fluttered. The young maiden, Parsley, will eat nothing but parsley, which in Snettering-on-Snoakes grows only in the fairy Bombina's garden. All is well - until Bombina is released from the fairy queen's dungeon. Her crime? Failing to get along with humans. And turning them into toads! Meanwhile, twin princes Randolph and Rudolph are causing trouble at Biddle Castle and pinning everything on their younger brother, Tansy. Prince Tansy cares about Biddle. Randolph and Rudolph don't. But one of the twins will be king, unless Prince Tansy accepts help from a green Biddlebum Toad! A delightful retelling of the little-known German fairy tale Puddocky, this fifth Princess Tale from Newbery Honor author Gail Carson Levine shows that nothing is quite as it seems and that anything is possible, with a dash of magic and a barrel of love.
    Members Reviews:
    Great story.
Wonderful re-write of a well-known fairy tale. Gail Carson Levine puts an interesting twist to the story that makes it a lot of fun.
For pity's sake, read this book!
Okay, I'll admit it. I am a Gail Carson Levine addict. I'll read anything she's written. But that's because she proves herself over and over and over. For Biddle's Sake, one of two new stories in the Princess Tales, lives up to the other tales in this series. Parsley loves, well, parsley. She won't eat anything else. The only place parsley growns near her parents' home is the garden of a fairy, Bombina, who is in fairy prison for turning too many people into toads (she's only allowed 5 a year). Alas and alack, the fairy is released and catches Parsley's father in mid-steal and ends up taking the parsley-loving mite home with her. As Parsley grows up, she becomes fascinated with the local royalty. The king has three sons, Randolph, Rudolph, and Tansy. Randolph and Rudolph are holy terrors who blame everything they do on their younger brother, Tansy, and get away with it. During the course of all of this, Parsley is accidentally turned into a toad by Bombina, the fairy, and wisked away to live by a stream. When the time comes to select the next heir, the king can't decide between the twins (R&R), and ends up sending all three sons on three quests.
Who will win the quests and become king? What is poor Parsley's fate? Buy the book and read for yourself.
Also recommended: All books in the Princess Tales Series, Robin McKinley, Diana Wynne Jones, R.K. Rowling
Enjoyable yarn full of subversive fairy tale elements
For Biddle's Sake is a charming yarn with multiple layers of subversive yet entertaining elements.
The story is based on a little known fairytale, Puddocky, with the classic Levine fairy tale elements: silly quests like finding a dog that will fit inside a walnut shell; humorous names like Princess Alyssatissaprincissa (sister of Countess Marianabanessacontessa); silliness such as distinguishing the twins by the size of their nostrils; and, the gratuitous normal-girl-meets-normal-prince through non-normal means.
"For Biddle's Sake" shares several of the same locales (e.g., Snettering-on-Snoakes) and character lineage (e.g, King Humphrey IV) as the Princess Test, which is somewhat comforting as these names can be tongue-twisters.

Title: How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin

    Narrator: Geoffrey Palmer
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-27-13
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story from the Just So Stories collection.
Here is the complete and unabridged collection of Rudyard Kipling's delightful Just So Stories, which he first told to his own children before setting them down on paper: How the Camel Got His Hump, How the Leopard Got His Spots, How the Elephant Got His Trunk, The Butterfly that Stamped, and many others. Written in the late 1800s and first published in 1902, these enchanting animals remain unforgettable, over 100 years later. To hear these magic fables by a master of children's literature is to enjoy them.
    Editorial Reviews:
Rudyard Kiplings Just So Stories were initially composed as origin stories: new mythologies intended to illuminate how the various patterns and paw-prints and habits and habitats of the animal kingdom came to be. In "How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin", Kipling explains why the rhinoceros - once, he says, a sleek smooth creature - has such crinkly, crumply, bumpy skin - and further, why he is such an irritable beast....
Geoffrey Palmer displays his admirable vocal range in this light performance, drawing out the deft humor of Kiplings prose while simultaneously lending this sly story an air of true mythological gravity.
    Critic Reviews:
"This collection includes Kipling's 12 original Just So Stories narrated by Geoffrey Palmer, whose deep and resonant voice is perfectly suited to the tales. It is satisfying to hear the stories as they were meant to be told - aloud." (School Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    A wonderful classic
This is the bedtime book of my childhood. I love it, and I often refer to it. (Everybody knows a "Cat who Walks by Himself," right?) It ushered-in a lifelong love of Kipling and evocative and often amusing stories of animals and the Raj. This one was my favorite...a book of amusingly charming parables for the young and not-so-young. I also loved "The Jungle Book" and "The Second Jungle Book." Akela the wolf was my hero, and I was unendly jealous of Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves.
If you haven't read "Just So Stories," put it on your Kindle. Each story takes only a few minutes to read...I re-read them while I'm in a waiting room, using the Kindle App on my iPhone.
I was a little disappointed in this book
I was a little disappointed in this book. I bought it for a 3 year old and the illustrations are in black and white. OK for an older child but I had to look into other versions for one with color illustrations to stimulate the imagination of a 3 year old.
It is a bit annoying how the drawings were placed
It is a bit annoying how the drawings were placed, sometimes an obvious easy bump up or down a page would have left the story less broken up, but the version is decent - though remind me on my third time reading with kids to skip the crab story, no one likes it.
Great as a reading copy, not great for illustrations
This edition is a slim paperback with somewhat poor reproductions of Kipling's original art. I'd much prefer a larger, better-illustrated volume for my child.
    Classic Kipling
I read this first when I was about 7 yrs old. It's held up well except for the overt colonialism, but Kipling didn't know any better...or DID he? I've bought the same book for my 7 yr old granddaughter.

My 5 year old loved Pete the Cat after I introduced him to the "white shoes" book. We then purchased the Easter and Halloween books, which he enjoyed as much as the original. This was purchased as a Valentine gift that he was thrilled to receive and wouldn't put it down. It is written exactly the same as the other holiday books, which was disappointing to me and is the reason for a four star rating instead of five stars. However, if your child likes Pete, he/she will enjoy reading this book, too.
