Even better than the previous books!

In Murderous Secrets by Paty Jager, Shandra Higheagle sets off to look into the death of her father, a rodeo star from the Nez Perce Native American tribe killed by a particularly mean horse during a rodeo when Shandra was four. Recently Shandra has gotten in touch with a friend of her father's now living in a nursing home who has inspired Shandra to look into both her father's death and her own Native heritage. Afraid that her Native relatives might not accept her for being half- white, especially since her mother brought her up to avoid all elements of her Native heritage, Shandra nervously sets out on a trip to her father's people. Fortunately, she finds a family happy to welcome her and which helps her to locate some people who might be able to assist her.

But it becomes more and more apparent that not only did someone murder Edward Higheagle, but that someone remains around and active in venomous behavior today, more than 20 years after the initial crime. But as all readers of mysteries know, a murderer, once threatened, becomes multiple times as dangerous in trying to keep safe from getting caught. Thus, Shandra and Jack, the detective she is slowly learning to love, get thrown together to fight for justice on behalf of Shandra's father and their own safety as they struggle to avoid the grasp of the murderer.

I have enjoyed this series since the first book, Double Duplicity, came to audio. I really like the setting on the mountain with Shandra's trying to find the missing side of her heritage. So I was happy to get to see Shandra finally meet her Native family. I see great promise for future books as Shandra goes through a further path of personal discovery. I also appreciate seeing the growing relationship between Shandra and Ryan. I like seeing them take their time to heal from past personal injuries before rushing into a serious relationship. Further, I like the way that without even knowing each other's secret, the pair are able to help each other gain a degree of healing.

Ann M. Thompson narrates the audio edition of this book. In my review of the previous book, Deadly Aim, I indicated that I was not very impressed by the narration and its pacing, but this time I was happy with the narration. So maybe I just had a bad day in my listening to that book. The pacing seemed fine to me this time.

The mystery plots of the series continue to improve with each new entry. This mystery was very well written with plenty of intrigue and drama. I am impressed with the way this series continues to get better as it continues.

Beautifully written, original, a thoughtful thriller with a central character to aspire to.

Brilliantly narrated. If only there were more...

Best of the series

I savored this book over several days. i would listen two hours at a time and I must say that this one had me hooked.

Not once did I figure out the murderer until it was revealed. I thought back then and realized the clues were there but they were so subtle. I will take pleasure in listening to Glass Houses again.

Ms Penny is at the height of her craft. My only criticism is that when listening vs reading, it was slightly confusing about the time frame. I didn't always know if it was flashback or present. If I were reading I would have been paying a little bit more attention.

The reader is superb.

Would you listen to Glass Houses again? Why?

No. I enjoyed the story, but I really don't like Robert Bathurst reading these books. He's an amazing actor. I have so much respect for him, but for me this just isn't the right material for him. Maybe if I hadn't already heard Adam Sims reading the first few, it wouldn't be so disappointing. I loved Adam Sims narration of this series. He is Canadian and brings each character to life beautifully. Even hearing the difference between the French Canadian characters and the English speaking Canadians was valuable. He gave the books a sense of place that you just don't get with Robert Bathurst.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Robert Bathurst?

Absolutely and if he reads the next, I will listen to it because I want to listen to the next Gamache book. If he was reading another story (not Three Pines) I'd love to listen to him narrating, I'd just far rather he wasn't reading this series.

I love the characters in these books. I really enjoy the feeling of returning to Three Pines when I begin to read each new story. There's something remarkable about the juxtaposition between the comfort and feeling of home you get from the familiarity of the beautiful place, the warm characters, the cosy bistro etc.

Cute but Short on details

TJ Jenkins is approaching her high school 10-year reunion while still working as coach and PE teacher in Halloween in Paradise by Kathi Daley. She has to deal with bullying done by students, causing one girl to avoid school. Then Roy, the sole police officer left in Serenity, calls to alert her to the fact that Samantha Colton, a reporter from a television show that tries to solve cold cases, is poking her nose around the area and interviewing members of TJs high school class about the death of Holly, the class Homecoming queen who was killed the night of Homecoming. TJ has her interview with Samantha, who seems to try to implicate each member of the class who attended the party where Holly was last seen the night of Homecoming. Then, she learns from Hunter, her doctor boyfriend, that Samantha has been killed in a serious car accident, which might have been murder.

TJ determines to keep up the work started by Samantha and figure out who was responsible for the death of Holly. The deeper she digs into the case, the more she finds out Holly had many negative traits, blackmailing people left and right. With the high school graduating class being made up of some really influential people, it becomes obvious that a lot of people have too much to lose. It seems the current bullying problems are related to ones from the past.

This book was very interesting, and I enjoyed it. But it was only 4 hours and 27 minutes, so unable to develop as fully as the book could have done. I question whether the author was just rushing to publish another book without taking the time to make it more detailed and complex. The many additions to the character list of former classmates at the reunion gets confusing at times as well. I do enjoy the characters, especially TJs little sisters, Gracie and Ashley, who seem so real as special children. I would love to visit Serenity (when there is no snow on the ground of course!) and get to meet all the people who live there. I also really like the dedication to animals that TJ and especially Gracie exhibit, as they seem to rescue another one in each book. In this book, they rescue a golden retriever puppy lost in the bushes who becomes 2nd grader Gracies special friend Pumpkin.

Coleen Marlo does a good performance in recording the audio edition of this book. She seems to belong to Serenity and dies a lot to help us feel that we are being taken there ourselves.

Halloween in Paradise was fun to listen to, but it did not contain the depth of a strong mystery book.

Great Book!!

This book by Anne McAneny was very well written. I loved all of the twists and turns this story had. Laura Jennings did a great performance and put so much into it. I loved the suspense and the imagery this story had. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. Before I listened to this book I didn't have a clue what the cover art had to do with the story, but I totally got the bicycle tire and snake after I started it. Love and adventure are two words that describe part of this book. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no cost by the author, publisher, and/or narrator. I will most definitely look for more books by both the author and narrator, and will listen to this one again.

The Peeling of Small Town Onion Layers

Cholie receives an assignment to do an article on that week in the town's history.

A small fire breaks out at the general store, where the winning ticket had been sold. The fire uncovers a pot growing business and a hidden room with handcuffs and a bloody shirt that matched the shirt that Hoops was wearing on the day he disappeared.

Layer by layer more secrets will become uncovered in this novel. Also the lottery winners seem to be having a run of bad luck.

Then there was the attractive mysterious neighbor of Chole, Rafe. I figured out fairly early in the novel who Rafe really was.

Riveting novel!

This is one of the few books this summer where I found that I just couldn't put down. This is an engrossing novel filled with twists and turns that it leaves the reader anxious to know what happened till the final page has been turned. Even then, the story still haunts the reader.

This novel focuses on four friends ~ Kristina, a beautiful basketball player, Conni, her former roommate, Jim, her boyfriend and Albert, Conni's boyfriend. Kristina is found dead and the novel focuses on the unraveling of secrets among the four friends. It is a chilling portrayal of three human beings who are indifferent to the fact that their friend is dead. It's a creepy novel ~~ with dark undertones. The dark undertones has to do with apathy and indifference of another human being's plight in life or in Kristina's case, death. Cossetted and spoiled, these undergraduates in a priviledged college fought the investigator in the murder case in his attempts to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Kristina's death.

This book will creep you out ~~ it will annoy you because Simons shows the worst of human nature. It will leave you twisting in your seat as you think of one scenario or another till you are ended up with surprises that you didn't think of. It is a riveting book ~~ perfect for those lazy summer days at the beach or sitting in your hammock.

Even Better Than #2

4.5 Audiobook Ellie Ashe has added another gem to the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries series! She has also proven that a great writer can take their act on the road, so to speak. Each Miranda Vaughn story has a vastly different setting and premise for the mystery, but each one is as engrossing as the next.

Lucky Penny revolves around a casino and resort setting. Its described in such vivid detail that the scenes naturally unfold in the listeners imagination. This setting was even more conducive to the accidental shenanigans Miranda somehow always becomes involved in. Real life casinos and resorts are meant to foster feelings of escapism and excitement. Lucky Pennys literary versions do the same.

Each installment in the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries series has its own all-encompassing mystery that begins and ends with each novel. Unlike other mystery stories, listening isnt only about solving the mystery before the protagonist. Its about solving the mystery alongside the protagonist and experiencing her journey.

Miranda Vaughn is an innately endearing and relatable main character. Her personal story is the larger over-arching plot throughout the series. Her romantic life starts out as an inconvenient (to her) crush in Chasing the Dollar, evolves into a will-they-wont-they scenario in Dropping the Dime, and reaches a satisfying culmination in Lucky Penny. My favorite thing about this romance is the naturally flirtatious manner in which it is written. Throughout the series, the romance remains a subplot, never outshining the individual characters or respective mystery plots. Ashe writes it in such a way that it enhances the development of her characters, instead of hindering it, and still satisfies the [seemingly obligatory] romance requirement for Cozy Mysteries.

Theres even the slightest teasing of a love triangle, which I cannot complain about either.

Hilarious writing and FANTASTIC narrator

Im going to keep this short and sweet: this book is great. The story is very nerdy and entertaining (and hysterically funny) and Lauren Fortgang as narrator is awesome. Seriously, I cant stress that enough. Im an audiobook enthusiast, and Lauren is the best narrator Ive ever had the pleasure of listening to. 10/10, will listen again.
