"Good job you didn't turn on the lights...."
A student nurse has the shock of her life when she discovers her patient, prosecutor Derek Nicholson, brutally murdered in his bed. The act seems senseless - Nicholson was terminally ill, with only weeks to live. But what most shocks Detective Robert Hunter of the Los Angeles Robbery Homicide Division is the calling card the killer left behind.
For Hunter, there is no doubt that the killer is trying to communicate with the police, but the method is unlike anything he's ever seen before. And what could the hidden message be?
Just as Hunter and his partner, Garcia, reckon they've found a lead, a new body is found - and a new calling card. But with no apparent link between the first and second victims, all the progress they've made so far goes out the window.
Pushed into an uncomfortable alliance with confident investigator Alice Beaumont, Hunter must race to put together the pieces of the puzzle...before the Death Sculptor puts the final touches on his masterpiece.

    Title: Prayer for the Dead
    Subtitle: Inspector McLean, Book 5
    Author: James Oswald
    Narrator: Ian Hanmore
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-14-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Detective Inspector Tony McLean is on the case when the search for a missing journalist uncovers the scene of a carefully staged murder. In a sealed chamber, deep in the heart of Gilmerton Cove, a mysterious network of caves and passages sprawling beneath Edinburgh, the body is discovered in a seemingly macabre ritual of purification. But McLean knew the dead man and can't shake off the suspicion that there is far more to this case than meets the eye.
For one thing, the baffling lack of forensics at the crime scene seems impossible. But that's just the first in a series of revelations about this case that seems beyond belief. Teamed with the most unlikely and unwelcome of allies, McLean must track down a killer - driven by the darkest compulsions and who will answer only to a higher power - until it's his own blood on the altar.
Shocking and suspenseful, Prayer for the Dead, the fifth installment in James Oswald's internationally best-selling series, plunges listeners into the bone-chilling darkness of an underground world filled with ancient secrets.

    The whispering!!!! UGH!
A decent story that is somewhat hard to understand because the earlier books are not available and , apparently, the characters stories carryover. But for all that, it held my interest.
The narrator was not bad but whoever had the idea of the perpetrator's "menacing" (not!) whispering should be fired! Totally annoying and had to grit my teeth to get through them. Not a good choice.
It would have been good to know more of Inspector McClean's backstory. I'll try the next installment and see how that goes!

Bravo to the new voice actor!
The voice actor for this book is different come the one for the first three books on the series. His French pronunciations are a great improvement, as are his voicings of the characters. I was able to lose myself In the story instead of being frustrated with the reading.

Very British - drei England-Krimis in einem Band!

Confusing array of characters and friends
There are simply too many characters -and resulting relationships and friendships- in this book to make this an enjoyable read. At some point the reading became tedious. I've read all previous books in this series, and enjoyed them all. If you don't read this book in one sitting you may have problems when returning to it. Good development of recurring characters, the detectives. There is a list in front of the book that lists the dozens of characters and how they are related to each other. That may be nice for the hardcover or paperback versions of the book, but on Kindle it's a hassle. I hope the next book in the series will have a much smaller number of characters in its story!
    Immer empfehlenswert!
Ich habe bisher alle in dieser Serie gelesen und ich fand sie alle sehr spannend. Dieser Roman hat mich auch nicht enttäuscht.
    Book of the year
Fantastic book, best book from Nele Neuhaus, ever!
    Five Stars

    Lesbian fiction not favorite.
I have lived in SD all my life, and I am not a fan of stories set in South Dakota, and written be an author who has obviously not lived in SD for any length of time. As an editor I can appreciate a wall written story, good Grammar makes both reading and listening makes the story easy to follow and to listen to the story. I am also not a fan of lesbian drama, as it takes years of experience (Takes on to know one) to write a good lesbian drama. I've lived, loved, and tragically lost a partner. And I still can't write about it.

Her novel, At Risk, was worth the $1.99 I paid!
This is my 4th SG Redling novel. The others are Redemption Key, Baggage, and The Widow File. At Risk is an excellent little action thriller if you can avoid noting her incorrect geographic detail; she apparently does no geographic or local weather research for her novels. Still, it is an interesting story. Narration is excellent.
Good story, didn't like narrators voice at first
It took about 30 mins of listening to like the narrators voice. Something about it I just didn't like at first but the more you listen it gets better. As for the story I liked it. Thought it was a little slow in the beginning and forgot what the book was even about but I understand that the author was trying to build the character while hinting of her back story. Once I got into the real story line then it had my attention and I actually sat in my living listening to it to see what happens. I usually just listen on the way to work and back.
    Wow!
Well knock me down.....this book turned out to be so utterly crazy near the end, I couldnt help but pull at my hair. My thought was Was EVERYONE crazy?.
Boy, I love this author. This book was tops. And the narrator very good. Going to find another S.G. Redling book. This one was my 4th.
    Keep em coming, S.G. Redling.

    Members Reviews:
    Murder and marriage don't mix
Kate Collins' third book in the Flower Shop Mystery series, "Dearly Depotted", provided a lot of entertainment, humor and page-turning. Protagonist Abby Knight is the owner of a florist shop named Bloomers, which she opened up after failing out of law school. Her biggest job at the moment is doing the flowers and decorating for her cousin Jillian's wedding to wealthy country club type, Claymore Osborne. Cousin Jillian has had cold feet before and Abby knows she's going to go through this again.
After the cold feet once again warm up, the wedding seems to be going off without a hitch, when Abby loses track of Claymore's grandmother who Abby must keep an eye on during the nuptials because she tends to wander off sometimes. When Abby finds Grandmother, she is by the gazebo staring at the dead body of Jack Snyder. During the wedding, Jack and a large, brutish man named Josiah Turner had gotten into a fist fight. Josiah was distant family and everyone was glad that he didn't wear his bib overalls to the wedding, but all were surprised to see him there. Josiah becomes the first suspect in the death of Jack. There are many more suspects who come to light in this well-written mystery, but it will keep you guessing.
Abby is a character that I like because of her humor and her persistence. She takes on the investigation into who killed Jack Snyder along with the handsome Marco to whom she is attracted. Abby can do some things that aren't in her own best interest and safety sometimes, but she is very loyal to her friends and family and wants only to be as helpful as possible. The other characters who work in the floral shop are a warm and likeable group of people, too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading the 4th in the series,
Snipped in the Bud (Flower Shop Mysteries, No. 4). These are light, cozy mysteries, but are better written than some of the others I've read. There is more detail and it's interesting to read about the combinations of flowers that Abby uses in her arrangements. Nice, fast read.
    Three Stars
An average mystery series. Enjoyable light read.
    Well Done Cozy Mystery
Abby Knight is thrilled that her cousin Jillian is getting married. Sure, she's not thrilled that her bridesmaid's dress makes her look like a clown, but Jillian has hired her to do the flowers for the wedding and Abby, owners of the Bloomers Flower Shop, can use the money. Abby's even willing to look after Jillian's grandmother-in-law during the wedding. Life is never dull with Abby around as a fistfight breaks out during the wedding. But the real trouble starts when Grandma wanders off and Abby finds her near a dead body. Abby's not one to shy away from investigating a murder and is especially anxious to solve this case, as one of the suspects is the boyfriend of Grace, her shop assistant.
"Dearly Depotted" is a delightful entry in this charming cozy mystery series.

    Fantastic
I ended up enjoying this book very much. I found it hard to get started because of the subject matter, I deal with Hispanics, legal and illegal every day, so the subject touched close to home. I started off with the Kindle version which I won on a Goodreads giveaway and then switched to the Audible version and was able to get through the book much easier.
The writing was excellent and I stayed on the seat of my pants the last half of the book. There was a lot of character growth in Dagny and there was plenty of character information on the other main characters in the book. I didn't feel like they were 1 or 2 dimensional characters.
There were twists I didn't expect, there were a couple of twists I thought would go one way but ended going a totally different direction, so I was kept guessing. The pace was brisk without being too fast and I was kept on my toes in a couple of places trying to figure out what was going to happen.
Angela Dawe did an excellent job in the narration, pacing was good, emotions were what they should be. All and all I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
I look forward to reading other Dagny Gray novels as they come out.
    "Aimed For An Iceberg"
Would you listen to Borderline Insanity again? Why?
yes, as it had the flavor of Linda Howard's Cry No More, a romance mystery.
This story showcases "perception is more important than reality".
I hope author has book # 3 in the hopper with Ms Dawe reading it. Book #1 reader sample didn't appeal to me. (no sample of her male voice)
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lots of characters to like in this story as it is a fast pace good dialogue story.
Victor, special agent forensics accountant, is a fave because he has brains and puppy dog tenacity to follow our fearless heroine Dagey. Father Diego, "a lot of handsome wasted on a priest."
Have you listened to any of Angela Dawes other performances before? How does this one compare?
Ms Dawe has really hit her stride in this book with great accents and voice inflections.
Ms Dawe's male voices are her best quality (lots of male characters in this story) and she has wonderfully improved her cadence. (note: I do use the new 1.25x speed to match the author's intent)
I just finshed Marcia Clark's Moral Defense, both are outstanding listens.
