He knows he should let her love Simmons, who can save her and her siblings, especially with money and resources dwindling. But knowing and doing are different matters. He's busy hatching a plan to salvage things when his citizenship backfires, and he's asked to do the unthinkable.

I try NOT to give 5 star reviews. Couldn't help it this time.
Surely it's not just me, but a lot of sequels - especially the middle book in trilogies - never seem to live up to the hype of the original book. Especially dystopian books (I'm lookin' at YOU Maze Runner!). But here in the second book of Carrie and Greg's struggle in Belliston's unique dystopian society, I find I am more interested and excited than I was with "Life," the first book in the series.
Every page I turned I was more involved in the story and the characters. I wanted to get to the bottom of things. I raced through pages. My husband looked up at me at one point and whistled. "That book must be intense." Apparently, I was clutching my ereader in a white-knuckle grip and reading with widened eyes. I absolutely hated reading the last few pages because they were the last. I had severe book hangover. Took me days to recover. I really, really need the next/last book in the series to be published NOW.
The book "Life" ended on a hopeful note, despite some pretty terrible things happening to all characters involved, and "Liberty" picks up exactly there. Our main characters, Carrie and Greg, have been through a lot but they have finally settled into a routine with each other and their community of "illegal" citizens squatting on government property. But no sooner is the reader getting cozy than WHAM - everything that could go wrong, does goes wrong.
Chicago is burning, thanks to a growing rebellion of people who are pretty dang tired of the corruption of the new United States. They want their rights, their humanity, and their future back. "Live free or die" is their rallying cry. But pockets of citizens rebelling against the government can hardly make a difference. This isn't 1776. Greg doesn't want to be dragged into a war on the losing side and Carrie is blissfully unaware of how much this rebellion is going to rock her world.
Without giving too much away... Greg finds himself between a rock and a hard place when the government makes demands on him, his mother grows weaker by the day, and Carrie's love for him threatens to end the help of their guardian - Oliver the patrolman.

    Title: The Rift Uprising
    Author: Amy S. Foster
    Narrator: Claire Coffee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-20-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The first story in the fast-paced action-adventure The Rift Uprising trilogy - an enthralling mix of speculative fiction and military thriller - in which a young soldier comes to question the monsters she's trained to fight against...and the monsters she fights for.
Seventeen-year-old Ryn Whittaker is a Citadel: an elite, enhanced soldier specially chosen to guard a Rift, a mysterious and dangerous portal to alternate Earths scientists cannot control or close. Trained from the age of 14, Ryn can run faster, jump farther, and fight better than a Navy SEAL - which is good when you're not sure if a laser-wielding Neanderthal or an ax-wielding Viking is trying to make it through the Rift and into your world. But the teenager's military conditioning and education have not prepared her for the boy who crosses through - a confused young man, seemingly lost and alone.
While there's an immediate physical attraction, it's his intelligence and curiosity that throw Ryn off balance. The stranger asks disturbing questions about the Rift that Ryn herself has never considered - questions that lead her to wonder if everything about her life and what she's been told these past six years has been a lie. Are the Rifts as dangerous as her leaders say? Should her people really try to close them...or learn how to travel through them?

    Quite Entertaining!
What did you love best about The Rift Uprising?
The promise of a ever evolving environment for the characters to challenge
What other book might you compare The Rift Uprising to and why?
It reminds me of Sliders with the main plot
Have you listened to any of Claire Coffees other performances before? How does this one compare?
The performance was really quite good with clear distinction between character vocal personalities
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Possiblities are infinite!
    The Rift Uprising
I quite liked it. It is a typical young adult science fiction. When I took a break I found myself itching to read some more and curious about what will happen next. I'm a huge fan of science fiction and this book definitely had it all! And it works. The only thing I didn't love was how quickly the romance between Ryn and Ezra developed. I would of liked to see it progress more authentically. Maybe only reaching full potential in the second book.

    Entertaining, sometimes scary sometimes loopy
For the most part, I enjoyed listening to this book, though there were a few things that left me scratching my head, like the ending. In a way I found that refreshing because I doubt very much it'll become a series, like so much of the fiction produced these days. Also, I'm not sure if it's my modern sensitivities at play or it's just a coincidence that the phrase "all lives matter" is repeated quite a few times. Though it could be just a coincidence, I found it noteworthy for some reason. There are moments that the narrative (and the narrator's voice helps a lot) becomes surprisingly creepy, and I wondered if again, it was my overreaching imagination, or there are a few religious undertones in this book. Overall, i found it original, though the science isn't quite plausible in my opinion.

Something has happened to the world.
People are going mad, the very foundations of society are crumbling. Only Adam Keller, testing a prototype environment suit, apparently remains safe - but for how long?
Can anything be done, can any of it be reversed, before everything goes to rot?
The latest post-apocalyptic tale from award-winning and best-selling author Paul Kane (the sellout Hooded Man, The Disease, The End of the End) presents a nightmarish vision of a possible future, blending social commentary with pause-resisting action. This is one that fans of The Road and The Walking Dead will really not want to miss!
    Members Reviews:
    Definitely unique!
This is going to be a hard book to review as I don't want to spoil things. The story is centered on Adam. He is testing a revolutionary new suit, called a Skin. From what I gathered, it recycles your waste, sweat etc and makes it so that you don't need to eat or drink etc. While in the suit, some event happens that causes everything to start rotting, I mean everything!! Adam seems to be the only person immune to it because of the suit. Is he it? Is there hope for him and his future?
While I liked the concept and originality of the plot, it felt rushed at times. I know it's a relatively short read, but I do think that the overall world building suffered because of it. I wanted to know more about how the Rot came about and about the suit.
Same way with the character development. We never really got a sense of who Adam really was. He goes through a lot during the Rot, but he never seems to grow. Again, I know it's hard to have all the elements in a short book, he still could have grown a little.
My thoughts seem all doom and gloom about the book, but it's not all bad. The overall story was good and I liked it, I just wanted more from it! I will check out more from this author though, as he has a wonderful imagination!!
Narrator Chris Barnes did a great job with this book. It's told in a format of recordings from the main character and the narrator really knew how to bring him to life. He captured the hopelessness, the sense of lose from the character perfectly and gave a brilliant performance. I've listened to quite a few of the books he has narrated and never once has it been a less than stellar performance!!
*I received a free copy of this but voluntarily reviewed it. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.*
a dark novel with literary overtones
Adam is a fighter pilot chosen to test a self-sustaining skin suit. It recirculates all his water and waste so the wearer doesnt need to eat or drink. It was meant only to be worn for one week, but when the world falls apart, it is the only think keeping Adam from the rot that is infecting the world.
Some contagion has entered the world, turning men and women into mindless and ultra-violent mandmen. But it isnt just the people, its all things. Buildings and machines are decaying, even the very ground is disintegrating. Adam may be the only man left untouched, protected by his suit. The cause is unknown and he may be the only one left to find a stop to the destruction, if he can survive.
There is a feeling of I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. The bleak separateness of the landscape and everyone out to kill him. Has the world simply evolved and now Adam is the outsider, trying to hold onto the past.

All's Well That Ends... Well! Great Satire!
If you could sum up The Myoshi Effect in three words, what would they be?
    Satire, Relevant, Funny
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Myoshi Effect?
There are so many, beginning to end - the dual presidency, the invading Canadian Hoarde, the Owsley, Grace Slick inspired meeting of the leadership. The urine collection... onward and forward. Lampooning extraordinaire!
Which character as performed by David S. Dear was your favorite?
The entire ensemble of the story. The delivery and variety of voices. The flow and pace. Well done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened TWICE back to back! Seriously, I have never done that.
    Any additional comments?
If you are easily offended, BEWARE! If you watch what is happening on the news and just chuckle and shake your head or get peaced off then you should this audio version of "The Myoshi Effect".
One of my new favorite humor audio books!
Thanks for the opportunity to review it.
This review copy audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost.
    What. A. Trip.
This might be one of the most awkward books I've ever listened to. And I mean that in an endearing way. The Myoshi Effect is a bizarre and interesting satire about the United States, a girl sucking on a rocket pop, friggin Canadians, and many other things that I can't even list here for fear of ruining the book.
If you don't enjoy good satire or a random laugh, then this book isn't for you. But if you like to laugh at the most ridiculous and random things -- this is a great respite from the world around us. The innuendos between the two presidents might be one of the funniest scenes I've read/listened to in a book in a long time.
But, seriously -- Myoshi Effect was good. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I could tell that Yoakum had a point to it all (even if that point was to make the user laugh). And it was the perfect length to not feel drawn out.
David S. Dear does the narration for it giving each and every character (and there were quite a few of them) a voice. Some of them were better than others. I definitely like the general who basically acted like a hype man, some of the Canadian voices (mostly because they made me laugh -- I live really close to Canada), and the two presidents.

Great Book from a New Author
What made the experience of listening to Mars: The Final Day the most enjoyable?
I like that the story is fast, you can listen to it in a matter of hours. While the story is fast, it does not feel rushed. You get a complete story, and a good feel for the history and people of Ikara.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoy Jast. The weight of his peoples destiny is clearly one his shoulders, while some protagonists complain about their destiny, Jast accepts it, and makes the best of his situation. He is calm, and thoughtful. He makes mistakes like we all do.
What about Matthew Wienss performance did you like?
Matthew has a great voice, and I like his different accents for the 5 families. His Scottish and Irish sounding accents are the best.
    Any additional comments?
I read the first edition of this book, this audio version is more polished than the first edition was. I am enjoying the evolution of this book, and looking forward to the rest of the books.

Fugitive 07760 woke to a busy city street. His memory was blank. A well-dressed man approached him. He left a locked briefcase at his feet.
An agent named Nanette tracked 07760. Her agency had been following the anonymous man through time. But the case was different than all the rest. Her well-dressed protégé had given the fugitive the briefcase. A fellow time agent getting involved was cause for panic.
His memory came back slowly as the technology in his body began to regenerate his neural pathways. Fragments of a past bubbled to his conscience. He wasn't sure if it was worth reliving. There was a blond woman from years ago, and she disappeared because she was curious.
He was on the run because he asked a simple question. "What's the future like?" There was much information about the past. Historians would travel back, blend in, and record "real" history, but 07760 was not allowed to travel to the future. Why was future travel restricted to some mysterious agency division?
There was no time to think. The time agents are on his heels.

    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of Joshua Cohen and Ben Lerner, After James captures the dystopian strangeness of our current world.
A neuroscientist walks out of her life and isolates herself in the woods, intending to blow the whistle on a pharmaceutical company and its creativity drug gone wrong. A recently orphaned graduate school dropout is hired as a "literary detective" to decode the work of a mysterious Internet poet who writes about disappearances and murders with an inexplicably precise knowledge of private details. And a virologist discovers her identity has been stolen by a conceptual artist in whose stories someone always goes missing.
Ali, James, and Celia exist in worlds where implausibilities that once belonged to science fiction, ancient superstition, or dystopian visions are real or impending. Set in great cities, remote regions, and deadly borderlands, Michael Helm's groundbreaking novel, After James, is told in three parts, each gesturing toward a different fiction genre: the gothic horror, the detective novel, and the apocalyptic. Science and art become characters, and secrets form, hidden in the codes of genetic sequences, poems, and the patterns of political violence. Part to part, elements repeatotherworldly weather, disturbing artwork, buried corpsesand amid these echoes, a larger mystery arises, one that joins artifice to nature and fiction to reality, delivering us into the troubling wonder of the present world.

    Five Stars
Great product. Handy for so many applications on my boat and at home.
Brilliant plotting, frustrating at times, and requiring close attention.
Three novellas, each of which is related to the others through threads of dreams or foreshadowing. The plots all explore the nature of reality, viewed through lenses of madness, near death, hallucinogens, flickers of recognition from strangers, or writing which seems to capture one's own history. The threads weave back and forth within and sometimes between the stories, and even the title of the book and the order of the stories seem designed to help construct the web.
The first story concerns a scientist who has designed a creativity drug which led to the death of a trial participant named James. She has quit the company and moved away to rent a home from a couple she's never met. The wife has left her notes about a neighbor who may have killed his wife. That is, if she hasn't hallucinated the whole thing in her mental illness. On the brink of historic flooding, the scientist tries the drug herself and while under its influence is rescued by this same neighbor. How can she decide if he is someone to fear?
In the second novella, which was most satisfying of the three, a poet named James becomes involved with a poetry web site which every viewer thinks is about him or her. Are the poems in code? Can they be manipulated to form direct links to the mysteries of people's lives? Who is the poet? And is the hallucinogen One Two, which James ingests, the creativity drug or is this a parallel reality to the first story?
The third story tells of a virologist (who has just lost a child she thinks of as "James") and her paleontologist-turned-mystic father. They have a relationship with a German artist who makes moving art based on the virologist's life but also reflects events from the first story.

    Publisher's Summary:
There are incidents and emergencies in the world that defy logical explanation, events that could be defined as supernatural, extraterrestrial, or simply otherworldly. Standard laws do not allow for such instances, nor are most officials or authorities trained to handle them. In recognition of these facts, one organization has been created that can. Assembled by a loose international coalition, their mission is to deal with these situations using diplomacy, guile, force, and strategy as necessary. They shield the rest of the world from their own actions, and clean up the messes left in their wake. They are our protection, our guide, our sword, and our voice, all rolled into one.
    They are O.C.L.T.
Nothing is ever normal in Old Mill, NC, particularly when Cletus J. Diggs and his buddy Jasper decide to go fishing. When Jasper tells him two fishermen they know saw a dinosaur in The Great Dismal Swamp, Cletus is ready to chock it up to shadows and too much beer. When he and Jasper are out fishing themselves and find a bass boat jammed nose first into the bottom of the Perquimans River with nothing left of the other two men but a boot with a leg protruding from it and one big-assed track in the mud, things get serious.
Joined by Geoffrey Bullfinch, Wendell "Mack" Macklemore, and Isabella Ferrara of the O.C.L.T., two genetic scientists with a strange story of hurricanes and DNA splicing, and a strange cast of others (including a very loud cockatiel), Cletus has to solve the mystery of where the monster killing people in the swamp came from, where it's gone, and find a way to stop it before it kills again. Unfortunately for the team, taking down a 40 foot, 16 ton dinosaur no one believes in is no easy task, and the clock is ticking.

    Fun.
This was very much a fun and "creature feature" type of fun. One where it takes little effort to follow but is lots of fun to listen to. It's a tongue in cheek, over the top, oodles of fun, book. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the dinosaur crock crossed with a cockatile bird thing, causing havoc in The Great Dismal Swamp. Add in some rednecks, some scientists and you have a lazy day read!!
I'm not going to get into the plot because it would spoil all the fun and surprises, but I will say that the book is well written and one you can't help but love. It's filled with action, adventure, giant crock things, a very loud and annoying bird, trigger happy rednecks and enough drama to keep everyone happy ;) I didn't realise this was book 5 in the O.C.L.T series but it can be read as a stand alone. I'm definitely going to check out the rest in the series and realy hope they are all so outlandish ;)
I had no issue with Arthur Flavell's narration. He read the book well and was easy to listen to.
I received the book, at no charge, from the publisher.

    More madness!
Having been left on a cliff-hanger at the end of part one I was pretty excited to get back to the story and I haven't been disappointed.
There is more manic doings and silliness to enjoy and the plot speeds along nicely.
I very much enjoyed the emphasis on Starlet, who is definitely my favourite character.
This is very crude and occasionally gross, which is not normally my kind of thing but I really enjoy these books. They sort of remind me of the english comic sci-fi writer Robert Rankin.
I will definitly keep an eye out for future sci-fi from Marc Richard.
David Dear was perfect again and definitely a narrator I want to hear more of.
My biggest criticism is the same as I had with the first part, because one novel is published in three parts it costs 3 credits in total, and that as enjoyable as they are 3 credits for one book seems excessive.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, narrator or publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.
Even more hilarious than the first one
Would you listen to Dave! Part 2: D.C. again? Why?
Absolutely! The narrator did such an awesome job!
What other book might you compare Dave! Part 2: D.C. to and why?
I don't think I've ever read anything I can compare this to, it's unique and it is great!

It's a crazy, fun, and politically incorrect ride.
Would you consider the audio edition of Dave! Part 2: D.C. to be better than the print version?
Absolutely! David S. Dear does a fantastic job with the narration that you won't experience with the print version.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dave! Part 2: D.C.?
Starlet driving 260 mph in a stolen cop car, wearing a stolen cop uniform, singing to "Lying Bit## Baby Killer". "Fu## Yeah!"
What about David S. Dears performance did you like?
David really puts his heart into the story and it shows. All of the character voices are unique, memorable, and entertaining.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, most definitely.
    Any additional comments?
This second book I felt was much better than the first. The first book was a little hard to sit through during the first hour or so but it did pick up fast after that. The first hour of book one consisted of listening to a lot of random people's ramblings. It did tie some of the story together later but it was still hard to listen to.
The story really is kind of a crazy roller coaster ride of political incorrectness and fun.
