Publisher's Summary:
Senator Kerry Kilcannon's insurgent campaign against Vice President Dick Mason has come down to the last seven days. Whoever wins the California presidential primary is likely to win the Democratic nomination. And for all the votes his passions and magnetism have gained him, Kerry's problems are formidable. Kerry is haunted by the tragedy of his older brother, a presidential candidate who was assassinated in California twelve years earlier. Kerry has stumbled in his advocacy of abortion rights, and a right-to-life fanatic has pushed this explosive issue to the forefront by murdering three people at a women's clinic. In addition, a journalist is striving to verify the story that while still married, Kerry had an affair with a reporter. And now, ever more threatening, Kerry is being stalked by the abortion-clinic murderer himself. With rare authenticity, Richard North Patterson depicts the world of high-stakes presidential politics that will hold the listener enthralled from the first to the last sentence.

Not His Best
Richard North Patterson's books have always been an engrossing read--until now. No Safe Place starts off well enough. Patterson explains that he's accomplished what he originally intended; to write compelling court room drama novels. In this story, he wants the public to know of the turmoil, sacrifice, and risks our candidates endure to run for the presidency of the United States.
The author has a talent for dropping the reader right into the action in the first sentences. In this case, a demented, gun-wielding young man enters an abortion clinic and begins shooting. With this, Patterson embarks on entertaining us with political rhetoric, hammering us with protagonist Kerry Kilcannon's speeches ad nauseum. It's not that I object to his philosophy, it's simply overkill. The righteousness of the candidate meets that of his would-be assassin--again and again and again...
The story evokes the memory of both Kennedy brothers slain for political causes. Kilcannon's love interest is believable, as is the unscrupulous current VP, against whom our hero is running. The media, most notably the press, are portrayed convincingly; altruistic, conniving, and weary.
Patterson is a superb story teller and when he sticks to characters, plots, and sub-plots, he shows mastery of his craft. No Safe Place is not a prime example of his writing.
If you can overlook Patterson's lecturing, you will still enjoy the story.
When seeking a superior suspense novel, always select Richard North Patterson: he delivers.
Richard North Patterson is the Apex in his field. Never formulaic, always intriguing. I would take this offer over any other in popular fiction today!
Exciting and believable at the same time!
This book was a bit slow at the beginning, but the farther I read, the better it got. The writing, plot, and characterization were all excellent. The most surprising thing to me was that the author made the entire thing so completely believable. I think that's a rare accomplishment.
